I caught part of The Invisible Hand of Fate today and I noticed that after the OCI/GI Joe montage, when Shore Leave and the other Village People OSI come in:  The OSI doesn't even believe in the Guild at that time, they're only worried about Sphinx.  I have a feeling that will come into play later.

I was wondering that to.

Another thing Im really curious about is how the heck did Brock get that golden dagger in order to kill the Hitler dog?

Unless I missed something (which is very far inside the realm of possibility) I feel like we aren't getting the full story.

and Sphinx dissapears around the same time that they find out about The Guild....at least i assume so.

so...it is possible that Sphinx was working for the Guild, OR had their thunder stolen by the Guild, and are working against them.

Dean said he lost it at the begining of the episode, scene #2 i believe.  Sgt. Hatred asks him if he killed Hitler yet.

Timeline wise:  That's right before Brock saves Hank and kills Hitler, the dog.

Given Brock's prowess, Dean wouldn't be a very hard target to pick pocket.

Can anyone find any credits on this episode anywhere? I thought I was just overlooking them or tuning them out, but now I'm thinking they're just not there. This is a little upsetting. :smileysad:

JOKES & REFERENCES

(please add if you have more)

 COLD OPEN

*"The Human Torch" and "The Angel" (and all the other titles) are stories from Marvel Comics #1.

*the "shrapnel" the doctors mention is Helper's head.

*Orpheus is wearing robes and holding a staff similar to Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark, in the scene where the Nazis open the Ark.

*Orpheus tells Dean "Don't look no matter what happens" and the head Nazi screams "It's beautiful." Both are direct quotes from the movie.

*the Nazi guards are pierced through the head and chest by lightning, and the head Nazi's face melts, just like in Raiders.

By the way, in case you're confused, here's the journey of Marvel Comics #1:

*Given by 21 to Dr. Venture: value is $500,000.

*Unsealed by Hank who reads it and dogears pages: value drops to $53,000

*Use to clean up Hitler's poop: value drops to $22,000

*Shot by Hank: value drops to $8000.

*Chewed on by Hitler/Giant Boy Detective: value drops to $850.

*Used as toilet paper by Sgt. Hatred: value drops to $0.

FIRST ACT

*Hatred's mention of Oswald is a reference to Lee Harvey Oswald, President Kennedy's assassin.

*Hank thinks Hitler-clones are cliche. He's thinking of The Boys From Brazil,  a 1978 thriller film.

*Giant Boy Detective was mentioned in Careers In Science; he also made an appearance in Showdown At Cremation Creek.

*Doe mentions Wishbone, a PBS series in which a dog daydreams about being the main character in classic books.

*The ending of the Giant Boy Detective story is a reference to Encyclopedia Brown, who solved mysteries the same way.

*Hank says Brock "whisked up the chimney with a thumb up his nose," misremembering a classic poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas": "And laying his finger aside of his nose / And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose."

*LARP stands for "Live Action Role Playing," a dorkier version of Dungeons And Dragons (and not too different from what the Monarch does, when you think about it).

*Orpheus mentions Cesar Millan, aka "The Dog Whisperer," who has a TV show about training dogs.

SECOND ACT

*Sgt. Hatred is Tony Danza to Hank's Alyssa Milano, a reference to the late-80s TV show Who's The Boss?. Charles In Charge is another TV show from around the same time.

THIRD ACT

*Molotov mentions the JSO: probably the Jedinica za Specijalne Operacije, the Serbian special police, some of whose leaders are being tried by international courts for political assassinations and warcrimes during the 1990s.

*Molotov mentions a mole in the Black Hearts; it turns out, that mole is Hunter.

*"Babe Ruthless" is of course a reference to Babe Ruth.

Jackson and Doc outdid themselves with this episode. The writing was great. The episode was too good.

It seems like Brock and Hunter are at it again.

....as far as smaller one time things in this ridiculously complicated (and brilliant!!) episode that stands out.   ....I like the "turning a proper noun (Hitler) into a regular noun ("...I guess when everyone hates ya, you fixate on making rotten hitlers":smileywink:".....Venture classic!

...actually all of the hitler humor is great.  ...for some reason that long dead evil murderous loon has a whole lot of comedic value. seriously.  "I love hitler, and hitler loves me!!...", "I can cross stab hitler to death off my list of cool crap I never thought I'd be able to do".....

Anyone else like Brock's artwork? I also like Brock and Hunter on the same side better than what seemed like what was going to happen at the end of last season.

Ah, that's why I couldn't find it on here, I was just looking at the end of the video like an idiot. Sad thing is I've watched the episode twice and I totally acknowledged that both times, then proceeded to forget, haha.

Thanks though, Fiery.

after watching that cold opening....  I was sure I was in for a non-sequitor "house of mummies" (which one of my favorites)

....I am so proud that I actually understand that episode.  I feel like I just discovered the double helix and cracked the human genome in the same day; I'm very proud of myself.  this episode was well worth the wait. --and, they ended up getting tons of stuff in that I never thought I'd see again (Steve Summers & Sasquatch; the unethical surgeon ("...everyone a-wants-a da robot heart":smileywink:; walking eyes; sphinx; ...and of course: SHORE LEAVE!!!!!!*)

Team Venture is the single glistening oasis in the vast endless desert wasteland that is television.  I'd say they're heads and tails above the competition, but that would only be accurate if those heads and tails belonged to a stack of Humongoloids standing ontop of each other.  keep up the good work!! ...to sum up my feelings about this premiere in 2 simple words:

                                 "BOOM--yummy!"

*more shore leave. There are 2 "Catclops" icons, but not a single shore leave icon... so i settled with Hunter.  also I want shore leave toys, shore leave posters, shore leave T-shirts (...boom, yummy would fit nicely on a turquoise sleaveless shirt... or perhaps a pair of low-cut Euro briefs ...maybe a speedo?)

....that was MY d*ck.

YES! I loved Brock participating in "art therapy"  ...and his loving pinch of Sasquatches nose as he warns him about YouTube.

Yup yup. He jumped ship and joined the enemy. And then, did it again coming back to OSI.... I think he is a very conflicted individual.

Also, the first thing they asked was "What should we do when he wakes up?", I think. Which wouldn't make sense if they were talking about Hunter.

Is that the end rushing towards me, or is that the floor?

I don't think anyone's confused. From the way things look right now, I'd say the OSI is trying to infiltrate all of its rival organizations.

He did though, because he used to work for them, and then went to the Guild...I'd call that a betrayal, because he was working as a spy for the Guild while he was at OSI

The "Stay gold" line from Brock is a reference to S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders.  Brock's a good man.  S. E. Hinton AND Shel Silverstein?  I'd love to dig through his bookshelves.  How nerdy of me to say that.

If true, then it's more ammo for the Brock Is Hank's 'Dad' hypothesis.

A more whacked-out--and thus more intriuging--hypothesis, however, is that Dermott is Hank's own son from the future.  To me, that'd be an outstanding misdirection.  Everyone just assumed that when Dermott said his dad was a black ops badass, he was talking about Brock, but who's to say Hank doesn't grow up to be a black ops agent?  Remember, at the end of "Buddy System," when Dermott is asked if he met "him," he replies, "Yeah, he was OK.  Are you sure he's my real father?"

If Dermott knows his dad as Future Badass Special Ops Hank, seeing Hank as a goofball teen would certainly make him skeptical that they were the same person.

"Ah, but how did Future Hank's Son (or Future Hank himself) arrive in the present Venture universe?" you may ask.

Between the S4 preview trailer's "Dean growing old" scene and the announced discovery of a time machine in the Venture residence (surely, you don't think Publick and Hammer just randomly decided to throw in a line about a time machine, do you?), it's probably pretty safe to expect some time/space bending somewhere during the course of this season.  My money is on a desperate Dean's botched attempt to "put everything back the way it was before" via the aforementioned time machine.

Instead of going to the past, though, Dean ends up in the future where Dermott (whoever he really is) ends up hitching a ride on the time machine.  As Dean tries to find the right moment in time before the events of the end of S3 shattered his life to pieces, he ends up at some earlier point, prior to "Buddy System," and Dermott gets off there.

Oh God, fantastic episode.  The Tarantino-esque chronological order and the art direction (comparing Brock to comics, the CGC rating as well as the comic book as a theme) was just astounding.  I was floored.

Honestly, I don't think the time machine line was more than a joke about Doc's horrible '70's decor. I got a laugh outta that.

Also bares mentioning Dermott told 24 he was Brock's son.

Durmott - "Would you believe me if I said I was Brock's son?"

24 -  "If that were true I don't think I'd catch you so easily."

D - "I couldn't run, because, I had a lighter up my butt."

 24 - "Okay, NOW I believe you're Hank's friend."

I thought Peachy was implying that Dermott was influencing Hank's behavior since they started hanging out. I think Dermott's only supposed to be 16 or so anyways, right?

Is that the end rushing towards me, or is that the floor?

OM**Bleep**ingG!  These men are geniuses!  This episode more or less lays out the path of the season, and yet, while it enlightens a little, it entices more.  When we finally get to the end of the season, and rewatch this, there will be so many "how did I not see that coming?" moments!  I am so jazzed; I need to lie down.

Attention inhabitants of the Adult Swim Boards! Do you think I don’t know your game? Do you think I am oblivious? Do you think that with all the wondrous technology at my disposal, I can’t keep track of how many of you are NOT reading my insightful review of Venture Brothers Season Three? I will not be ignored! I will rain down such misery upon your heads that the plagues of Egypt will seem like a picnic in the park by comparison! The rivers will run red, the skies will be dark with ash, and the lamentation of the women will be deafening! Your lives will become a Stuart Gordon movie! Or….you could just click the link…. The ball is in your court now !Venture Brothers Season III

I know you guys idolize the creators of this show so i'm going to try and word this as carefully as I can. *clears throat*

I think the whole Dermott thing could go either way. I don't believe they've actually come up with anything as far as revealing who's son he is.

I got bored, so I did my best attempt to order the clips chronologically. I figure you guys must have gone over all this stuff already, but I'll do it anyway. Episode takes place in an about an eight month span, since the Nazis gave Dr. Venture eight months to clone Hitler. It gets a bit messy because they didn't cut them the way that would have worked best, so some things may be in there twice. Also, I don't know what the spoiler policy is in here, my description for the links are pretty out in the open about the plot.

End of season 3 with the car explosion, plus Brock being recovered by OSI

Brock escapes OSI

Hank needs TP

Brock sees the boys for the last time

End of last scene

Nazis pick up dog, Brock sees the doctor.

21 asks Venture to clone 24, Helper's head arrives, CGC counter begins.

Nazis enlist Venture to clone Hitler

21 returns with X-1, asks to see Dr, Orpheus

Continuation of last scene

Brock leaves Steve and Sasquash

Brock attacks Black Hearts

Brock in SPINX captivity

Sgt. Hatred trying to get the boys to trust him

Hatred, Orpheus and the boys getting ready for the fight against Nazis

Linking this first one again, because it shows Dr. Venture in Nazi captivity

Hitler is killed

There are probably some mistakes if anyone wants to fix them/point them out for me. for me.

I'll grant that there's a possibility he's not Brock's son, but I don't think he's future Hank, or future Hank's son.

Basically, until shown otherwise I'm assuming he is the son of Brock.

This isn't the first time that the Venture Bros. have dealt with time travel.

Why, Grover Cleveland's very own Presidential Time Machine makes an appearance in Are You There, God?  It's Me, Dean.

Doe says,"...but I think I found your dad's time machine."  It appears to be a joke in the context, i.e., he didn't actually find it and was making a crack about the furniture, but that seems like a purposeful reveal that Dr. Venture does, in fact, have one.

Dermott's words to 24 do bear mention, but there's a big difference between the question he asked and actually saying, "I'm Brock's son."  If Dermott is from the future, and Hank goes on to become the Brock Samson of his generation, it would be a sensible comparison for him to make, much more so than saying, "Would you believe me if I told you I'm the son of a kick-butt secret agent from the future, who happens to be Hank?"

[EDIT:] Even if you take that exchange at face value and Dermott's father really is Brock, that still leaves the door WIDE open to the possibility that Dermott is Hank himself from the future, some time after he learns Brock is his father/cloned DNA source.

That's gotten to be one of the great things about Publick & Jackson's writing since they started doing the really involved story arcs. Few things are stated concretely enough to not leave a path out in any particular direction.

I do feel pretty safe in saying that 1) Dermott and Hank's relationship is leading up to a big reveal of some type, even if it's "just" that they're half-brothers, and 2) The way they're playing Dean's "breakdown" so over the top means it's going to trigger something big down the road.

Doe saying that he found Rusty's time machine was just a reference to retro decor of Rusty's bedroom.

Yeah, I'm a little lost there too. If Hunter was stripping and Brock had to reach into "his" "crevice", as it were, to retrieve the passport and such, how exactly does it work that he never had a sex change? I have the feeling that the idea of him not having had a sex change came up well after the end of season 3, and we're just not supposed to think about it too much, like the other mild inconsistencies that pop up.

this!   Some people are looking too far into this subject.  It was a 1 liner aimed at the decor.

Personally I think the interaction between Brock and Dermott in Jr. Venture Kid's Club episode would draw a conclusion that there is something more there.  The comment Dermott voices to his mother at the end of that episode is more of a reinforcement to the line of thought that he is Brock's son.  Possibly one of the many one night stand's Brock has had in his career traveling the globe for OSI.

But then Jackson and Doc may just be jerking our chain in a continual loop, which time-travel enables writers to set up surprises on the viewer.  I wouldn't put anything past them in the context of this thread of time.

More to come...

And speaking of minor inconsistencies, does it bother anyone else that 21 and 24 had worked together for years and were best friends, but somehow never saw one another out of costume untill the season two opener at therapy? This has bothered me ever since it aired, especially when next episode 24 picks up 21 at his house, and refers to 21's mom by name.

Well you have to remember that this episode covers the span of approximately 8 months.  Given the nazies stuck to their deadline for Rusty to clone a baby Hitler.

Given the fact that the same surgeon that did Hunter's original sex change is now a part of SPHINX and in on the situation the entire time.  A retro sugery isn't beyond the realm of possiblities.  Now if you wonder how could that happen so fast.

Remember that Jackson said that we are only seeing only a few days of these people's lives at a time.  Basiclly piecemeal relevations about the principals involved.  Given that, Molotov did shoot Brock and sent him several floors south into a palm tree that generously cushioned his fall to the concrete.  The next time we see him there is no bandage or open wound, just ropes around his naked frame.  Given his metabolism, and the fact that SPHINX has its own in house surgeon, he healed fast in the Surgeon's good care.  Meanwhile the Surgeon could have easily reverted Hunter to his original state during this time.  All of this occuring in the time frame supplied by the Nazi's deadline to Dr. Venture.  (which is the only piece of information about the duration of time this episode covers.)

But that's just my theory.

That bothered me at first, but now it just seems hilarious. Just because they hadn't seen each other out of costume doesn't mean they didn't hang out outside of the job. They just wore their costumes every time because they're total losers. :smileytongue:

But also, I think we kind of see them develop their relationship during the course of the show. I wouldn't assume it was prexisting, just brought about by the fact that they always happened to be working together.

Also, for all of you saying Dermott isn't necessarily Brock's son, I think the Tears of a Sea Cow episode makes it pretty obvious that he is. He both implies and states that he's Brock's son. You can't really argue with that.
