Convince the admins to put it in the board guidelines and I'll take a look at the situation.
ok I will work on this

Different helpers have different styles and do things a bit differently, which is great. They should be able to do it their own way to a certain extent. Some are good with banners, some are good with stats and wikis, some are just fun to have around, still others are smelly and don't take kindly to strangers, I'm not sure why we keep those ones around, but my point is, just because you don't see a helper posting every day, doesn't mean they're not doing stuff, or have done stuff in the past, or will do stuff in the future.
That's a defensive mechanism to keep people from trying to weed my garden.
Weeds are the only thing I can grow. Paws off the thistles!

Would it be considered flaming to tell the folks who use their own, most often, unappealing faces, for their icons that they've got a great face for radio?
Well, crap in a hat. That's a shame. I mean, how am I supposed to express my honest opinion that most of these people's faces displease me and I don't like looking at them, and they make it impossible for me to ignore it when they use it for their icon? I can say a car is ugly or an Adult Swim show has ugly animation and artwork, but just saying a person is ugly, even with a roundabout oldschool saying most won't understand, is considered flaming? There's not necessarily any mean intent behind that, or that I hate the person, I'm just calling it how I see it. In fact, you could say that their faces are "patently offensive"... to me!
Oh yeah, this just randomly came to me, but I think if Williams Street are going to have people in their employ, they should pay them. Mods and helpers should be paid, the same as interns should be paid. You're doing work, after all.
Although, this comes with the caveat that I feel the helper position itself is unnecessary, but if you're going to have it, may as well pay for people for their work.
Still, nothing a "Helper" does couldn't be done by an regular user who is a big fan and "leads" the community. Plus, I've yet to see any helper do anything as entertaining as some of the great users of old. They didn't get made helpers or paid or rewarded with special ranks or icons or anything of the sort, for their deeds. They were just happy to be great fans and be a boon to the community and make the place more enjoyable.
Why give these people special privileges and a target on their back that they don't need? I really don't get it, honestly. Not only that, but a good portion of the helpers are glorified lurkers, which I think flies in the face of the whole point of the idea and concept of the position. You're supposed to be around to help people, answer PMs, lead conversation, jumpstart things, not be a helper in name only who at best is like a hidden Disney employee "making the magic happen", or at worst, isn't even just not posting, not even on the boards most of the time, either. They aren't even IN THEIR FOLDER. They need to be de-helpered if they aren't going to do anything.
Would you like it if people were to insult you or your posts with a backhanded compliment?
Sure, that is a clever little colloquialism, but it is still insulting and derogatory towards whomever it is directed.
I've been saying for years that flaming and trolling should be done away with as far as TOS violations are concerned,
and replaced with derogatory and disruptive posting respectively, for the exact reason that there is no real margin for
error in that. It is either insulting and disruptive in the context of the situation, or it isn't.
Interns aren't paid, that is why they are interns, and not employees. That being said, Mods and helpers are volunteers,
so we should be appreciative of their efforts, since they do jobs that aren't exactly glamorous, and often subject them to
random, scurrilous and unwarranted posts.
As much as I appreciate the compliment (highlighted), even I, The El Jingai, the most electrifying poster on all the boards,
the People's Champ, the Great One, with talent on loan from God, whose words break the jaws of lesser men, who bowls a 300, over-handed, humble and humorous, can't be on all the time, nor can I be everywhere. More to the point, if you think that someone needs help, help them. There is actually very little that Helpers can do that regular users cannot do. If you see a need, step up and fill it, volunteer to help out with something, post and have fun. Do these things yourself, you just have to be willing to put forth the effort. Do it because it is the right thing to do, not for some rank or the ability to post a picture. You will earn respect that way, and find that you will have much more fun here.

This is where we're allowed to not keep chatting to a minimum, correct?!
This is where people ask the mods questions. . . and they chat quite a bit, the people I mean, not the mods so much.

Hm, well... see... I had no idea that the policy had even been done away with. So, I had assumed they had been banned so many times they finally stopped coming back. I had no idea that certain alts were those dudes this whole time.
But, maybe you have a point. Is it sort of like the whole idea of making stuff "impossible to pirate/hack" and that is what drives people to want to do it? So, is the idea here, that, if you just let them come back and give them a chance to behave, they won't go out of their way to break in and wreak havoc because they've been locked out? It's a sort of challenge to them? I think, maybe that's what the idea is.
I used to actually think "weed" referred to actual weeds growing out in yards and fields and such. You know, the tall grass and unwanted plants and such. I thought, why would someone want to smoke that? And, now that I understand what it's slang for, I still don't understand why anyone would want to smoke it. But, that's what happens when you mention some random thing like that I don't like, I latch onto it and go on a tangent.
That's good to see that you guys are still culling the inactive helpers though, and that you occasionally "make the rounds" of the various folders. I still like the way it was before with just Action Discussion and Comedy Discussion. I think the show folders, coupled with various user unfriendly updates has really choked off activity and lessened the size of the membership here.
You said a whole lot of things with that last section, but I still don't understand what you were trying to say. Still, I'm told that my little saying is basically still flaming, so I won't use it, and will try to keep my opinions to myself when it comes to people's appearances, even if they are offensive to me.
03-14-2012 02:43 PM
Oh, okay then.
Well yeah, there's ways to get around IP bans. I'm sure they figured out as much.
But yes, I don't know if it is so much about forgiveness, as it is taking away the initiative to "break in" and do bad stuff. I was thinking that it's like the whole trying to make an uncrackable lock, etc... It's just a challenge. And also because maybe they feel... uuuhhh... brain can't think of the word, but they feel cornered, persecuted, so they lash out? I don't know... But, the thing is, if they can just come back, and it's not all "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" then maybe the urge to break in and wreak havoc and "get revenge", etc. is lessened, I dunno'.
*sigh* You're probably correct on that. Although I admit was just too easy of a thing to do. I'll have to try to resist that temptation and stay above the fray, as far as that goes. But, that conversation was bound to devolve pretty quickly, anyway... but, it's all over with now. I'll take the lessons I learned from the situation and try to apply them to anything else similar that might arise in the future.

You act like it hasn't happened to me before. Some people just don't understand me, and can't stand me for that reason. But, personality clashes are bound to happen. But no, I wouldn't like it, but I'd deal with it.
You're probably right that the language should be changed. Flaming and Trolling are pretty inside and vague terms. It also doesn't help that different places tend to use differing definitions. Maybe suggest that to Humbug and see what he says to you, you might be on to something.
But maybe they should be paid! I mean, think about it. They're getting free labor. It's not right. Not only that, message board moderator is about as thankless a job you can get unless you want to be GM for a MMO, or an actual police officer. I respect and support the jobs that these people do, but that doesn't change the fact that many outright hate and don't understand nor appreciate what do for our society. There's also the fact that volunteering at some sort of charitable operation gives a lot better returns, than say... Moderating a message board. Maybe they need to be featured on Dirty Jobs. He's done some figurative Dirty Jobs before, this one is quite up there... Except... YOU DON'T GET PAID.
Nyuk nyuk, you know darn well what I was referring to with that link. I was showing that you don't need to be a helper to do amazingly creative and entertaining things on the board. In fact, you don't need show folders or helpers to exist at all. Things were better the way the were before.
No, I'm talking exactly about the thread that I linked, it's one of those awesome threads that our dear friend Vladimir used to make. He'd do MST3K-style reviews of premiering anime, episode-by-episode, and he even had his own little side kick and "skits". In fact, at one point, his threads were the only reason I came back to the boards for a good stretch, there. And, it wasn't just about poking fun at the shows, he'd give some genuine constructive criticism and thoughts, as well, and they were great discussions and fun was had by all.
I have... tried... to step in and fill various "needs". Things have not been so... successful, as you might have noticed. I had some fun skit/story threads that I was doing, where I'd have various anime characters battle against other pop culture figures. For various reasons, after making the slew of these threads, I had to be away for a week, and when I got back, the mods had dicked around with my threads and gotten it in their head they are "fan fiction", and moved them to various folders that I refuse to set foot on, almost as if to purposefully upset me.
The threads were successful enough, but again... after being gone for a week, and after seeing what happened, I didn't feel any interest in doing anything with them anymore. My enthusiasm for that was dead. Why other folk's little joke threads and such were deemed okay to stay, but mine deemed "not fit for the folders", I do not know. It's not like I was writing giant books, they read more like a play script, very short and streamlined, very bare bones.
I also did the whole "create your own Zanpakuto" thing, but it was in some other thread, where I felt the need to post it... for some reason, can't remember why, but it flowed with the discussion in that Bleach thread. I haven't put it in the actual "Create your Own Zanpakuto" thread, though I've been meaning to do that. There was also the unfortunate incident of where I created a Zanpakuto for someone else (Muse) to go along with how they were joking with people in the thread, but the browser crashed and I lost the huge post. Humbug, at the time, had decided to turn off the auto-save feature and not tell anybody. So yeah, that was pretty crushing. Granted, it's not his fault that I would depend on such a feature like that, but still...
I also tried my own thing where I tried summarizing and reviewing chapters of Rave Master that continued after the show ended its latest run on Sci-Fi. Apparently, myself and about three other people cared about what happened after that Anime was over, so yeah... that flopped, no audience.
I did contribute in the form of making a joke banner for FMA that actually got used, and I wrote three bios for the Bleach wiki. Can't say that I have any issues there. It's also worth noting that most of my posts on episodes and such of various shows are practically mini-reviews themselves, if anyone ever reads them. Those are just my regular posts, me getting all the thoughts out on that particular episode.
So, I like to think I do contribute in my own way, but I feel as though I've also been discouraged by the staff and several regular users, and also by sheer unfortunate coincidences.

Ben, I understand that you want to post your funny stories in places where they will be enjoyed an seen. I also understand you think the Moderators did you dirty by moving your posts to creative writings. Now Ben, you can't tell me that you don't understand why they put them in the creative writing folder.
Simply put Ben, think about it. You don't put English papers in with Math work. Or vice versa. Remember Ben, it is done to keep things organized an things in there perspective places. Ben, we don't have a problem with you joining or contributing to any of the show folder wiki/threads. The problem people have with you Ben, is that when you think your views are right an you think that they're views are wrong you have a tendency to insult the individual or group that you feel is wrong. Also Ben, just so you know. Keep posting. Post as often an as many times as you like.
But Ben, I caution you cause what you post an what others post are totally two different things. Remember you won't always agree with their posts just as they won't agree with yours. Ben, when this happens try not to belittle them an make them think you're a hot shot know it all. This pisses people off an this causes people to flame an insult you an vice versa. Keep this in mind Ben, an I believe you will have a far more enjoyment of this site an the people around you.
