7 deadly sins of Sponge Bob Squarepants

The little town of Bikini Bottom is not so innocent as it seems, if you stop looking from outside in, and begin to examine the characters of Sponge Bob closely, you might find that children really shouldn’t be watching the show at all.  I give you the 7 deadly sins of Sponge Bob Squarepants:

Envy
Represented by: Sponge Bob

If you have seen enough episodes, the hijinks that ensue are usually because Sponge Bob desires something: A position of recognition (best fry cook), Fame (jelly fishing/talent show), Hero fantasy (mermaid man and barnacle boy), etc.  Despite Sponge Bob already being arguably the best fry cook, nicest person, best employee, neatest and easygoing member of the city, he never seems to realize it.  Instead he goes to great lengths to obtain titles like King of Karate, winning he-man competitions, being the coolest guy on the beach, employee of the month, most talented person in the city, smartest person in the city, the list goes on.  He also is obsessed with becoming a new friend to everyone he meets.  Sponge Bob is envy incarnate.  While nothing is wrong with who he is, or his position in life, he constantly wishes to be something else, but never obtains it.  All the while endangering his personal relationships, and causing harm to those around him.

Pride
Represented by: Plankton

Plankton is obsessed with stealing the Krabby Patty formula, in order to take over the rest of the city with his fast food chain (megalomania).  He is arguably the smartest person in the city (said to be the only college educated citizen), and has proven to be a master of robotics and physics.  Obtaining a piece of paper from an unguarded burger joint realistically should be a snap.  However, Plankton is a master of his own demise, forgoing logical schemes and plans in favor of convoluted Rube Goldberg devices that function more to prove his genius (which he then rants about) than actually accomplishing his goal.  The epitome of Planktons pride lies in the fact that he created his own (computer) wife, who he uses to bolster his pride by ignoring her good advice in order to prove he is ultimately correct.  Plankton rarely acknowledges his failure for more than a few minutes before convincing himself that his next plan is true testament to his genius.  Only Sponge Bob seems to think he is an actual threat.  Krabs, (the only other character who notices him) treats his attempt at theft more like a game.

Greed
Represented by: Mr. Krabs

The most obvious, the show itself makes joke after joke pointing out how unearthly greedy Mr. Krabs is (literally, the ghost of the flying Dutchman awes at the extent of his greed in one episode).  Krabs constantly puts himself and others at risk, sometimes in life threatening situations, for his own monetary gain.  His daughter, who is just as greedy, is constantly forsaken when it comes to birthdays and otherwise acts of generosity that other parents would be occasionally happy to oblige.  Mrs. Krabs, who is never spoken of, most likely divorced the old man because of the strain his greed put on the relationship.  Krabs has made life-changing decisions for himself and others at the drop of a hat for money (including selling Sponge Bob’s soul, literally).  As well as commit heinous acts like grave robbery, and child endangerment.

Lust
Represented by: Sandy Cheeks

The only young female in the show that isn’t a shapeless fish, Sandy represents the only real feminine character in the show.  What’s more, the only feminine character that has interacted with every other main character at least once.  Inside her underwater tree bubble, she wears only a bikini, and it has been shown that even when wearing her pressurized diving suit, underneath she still is only clad in the bikini.  Sandy has been shown to exhibit intense passion from everything to protecting her friends to winning contests.  She is also the only character that has threatened to leave Bikini Bottom multiple times, each time motivating her friends to go to great lengths to ensure that she stays.  Her very existence has been enough of a motivator for Sponge Bob to commit self-torture to gain her approval (first appearance).  Her presence seems to make any situation more pleasant for those involved, and exhibits more range of emotion more frequently than any other character.  Also, Sandy being a mammal means that she would be one of two characters on the show capable of actual intercourse, as most species of sea life use alternative methods of reproduction.

Sloth
Represented by: Squidward Tentacles

Squidward is a character who considers himself very cultured, and thus “above” the humdrum activities of those around him.  This translates into Squidward usually not participating in normal activities, preferring to nap, sunbathe, or indulge in luxurious practices like manicures, expensive baths, and fine dining.  When Squidward does attend work, he rarely tries, and at times is seen simply ignoring his responsibilities, or taking impromptu breaks or leaves of absence when it suits him.  Apparently working is not a qualifying factor in keeping your job in bikini bottom.  Squidwards sloth also leads to his poor skill in the arts, as instead of training properly to dance, paint, or play the clarinet, his “practices” at these things are merely jaunts in a halfassed attempt, usually “interrupted” buy the slightest of distractions.  He is convinced that he is great, and everyone else merely has bad taste.  It could be said that Squidward’s aspirations are merely an excuse for him to never have to try in average life, since when he gets the chance to make something more of himself he usually panics.

Gluttony
Represented by: Patrick

While Patrick is not the only “large” character on the show, more jokes are made about his weight than any other character.  However, Patrick has never once gotten mad about his size, despite being insulted by many other attacks on his character.  Patrick has been known to eat large meals in the span of a few hours, and is portrayed as in the midst of eating half the time he is shown.  He is a slob, who has no friends except for Sponge Bob and a tenuous friendship with Sandy.  Patrick is also characterized by bouts of depression about almost anything, giving up in the face of almost any problem, at times shown to eat when these occur.  Patrick has never been shown to have a job, and most likely lives off welfare.  His bulk, which is constantly on display, (he is the only character to not wear a shirt of some kind), is pointed out to be an eyesore to most people, and has been portrayed in such graphic detail to imply that Patrick is very obese.  However, Patrick, NEVER, has made any attempt to be healthy or lose weight.   Patrick also has a fear of the doctor, implying that he is aware of his poor state of health, but is scared of what his prognosis might be.

Wrath:
Represented by: Gary

An unassuming character, it is surprising how much chaos ensues from Gary.  First and foremost, he is one of the only characters who causes non-cartoon violence to occur (that is, violence we empathize with, or see characters unable to shrug off), when receiving maltreatment, or biting or attacking other characters in the show.  The snail appears to have a “fight first ask questions later” attitude.  He has incited multiple panics and chaos in the city, remotely or first hand.  In relative scale with the show, Gary has caused Sponge Bob far more emotional turmoil than anything else, sending Sponge Bob into spiraling depression when going missing or leaving the home.  Gary has been seen destroying furniture in Sponge Bob’s house, and defacing property other than Sponge Bob’s.  Gary is also frequently animated in an aggressive fashion (baring sharp teeth and arching back).  Aside from his violent behavior, Gary is deceptively intelligent, implied to secretly be the smartest character in one episode.  Gary is also one of the only characters to display enough competence to foresee the outcome of a given situation, indicating bad ideas and eye rolls when given the opportunity.  On this note, it should also be said that Gary does nothing, ever, to prevent chaos from ensuing, aside from giving vague warning.  For all of Sponge Bob’ affection, Gary is rarely seen giving affection back, and seems to be motivated by personal gain more than compassion.

Should children really be learning these habits from these characters?

Daffy Duck's personality changed depending on who was in control.

His Greed side didn't really show up until later.

He was just clinically insane.

Bugs  definatly was a major sinner, though.

Greed - Enjoyed the luxury and riches of the celebrity life

Lust - luring hunters to their downfall by seducing them while crossdressintg

Sloth - spends a lot of his days lounging around

Wrath - just watch him go after the gremlin, not to mention his agression against a simple opera singer

Gluttony - wants nothing more than to have all the carrots to himself

Envy - always has to have the last laugh, gain the upper hand

Pride - has a love for declaring himself better than others and making sure the audiance knows he outwitted an advisary by breaking the 4th wall.

Show how much times have changed.

He was a crossdresser and not only was it acceptable, but was good comedy.

Back in the 30s.

Now the same cartoons would be looked down upon.

It's no wonder they only produce garbage now with rare animation gems here and there.

I heard Spongebob was suppossed to be homosexuel. When I endup watching it with my sisters, its so obvious. I turn a lot of situations around in Spongebob and its very much fitting. Spongebob and Patrick being the gey couple. Squidward being the straight guy that is a little grossed out and annoyed. Mr. Crabs would probably be the straight boss that Spongebob and Patrick have a crush on. Sandy, I think they put her in to not to make spongebob not look gey. The ep where squidward loses his job and starts freeloading off of Spongebob, Spongebob is in a french maid outfit.

Yeah, totally. I mean- what's at the bottom of a bikini? And just look at squidward's nose!

Don't take my word for it.
