I know there's a spot for pleasure down there, but I've heard, only once, of these two guys who've been dating for a while and how their first few attempts were pretty awkward.

It was just the heat of the moment with my and my ex. No awkwardness.

I think it was more of a "we didn't want to get banned for inappropriate comments" type of thing than thinkng you were homophobic or anything.

Humor's allowed, but it's generally a good idea to let people get to know you better before you start dropping jokes about potentially sensitive topics.

As for your question, the first time I attempted anal sex it was with a guy who was a lot more experienced than I was, so I pretty much let him take the lead. He was sensitive to how I was feeling and made sure he didn't take things too quickly. I'd say that's probably the most important thing.
