Are you serious? I just saw american psycho the other day and I can't believe anyone would find Patrick Bateman as anything other than pitiful and pathetic in his inhumanity. Seriously...

I am kind of sympathetic to Bateman. It's easy to hate him, understanding him can make you somewhat sympathetic.

Even though he's a sick f*ck.

No, I can understand him, sort of. I'm not a sociopath, I'm quite the opposite, like the polar opposite. I have the ability to empathize with almost anyone (unless other factors play a role). It was easy to empathize with Bateman.

I didn't hate him so much as pity him deeply. He was absolutely pathetic and out of touch with humanity. His life was horrible because all he knew was to try and fit in and try to play some role he didn't really understand. All he knew was this insane pressure. I don't care how sick his crimes were because they were fake and people die all the time anyways. But... there was absolutely nothing admirable or respectable about Patrick Bateman. He was simply a pitiful, pathetic sociopath.

Not exactly, he thinks everyone else is sh*t. Honestly, you can tell he doesn't even view himself as a person in the first few minutes of the movie. "On the face..."

I can't remember what else he says but it's not on "my face", it's "the face", as though he's caring for something that doesn't belong to him. He's completely separated himself from reality by the time the movie starts. He's kind of a sad character, despite being terrible.

I actually think the movie did a pretty good job of portraying him. It didn't do much of a job of portraying everyone else though.

But that's like having sympahty for Hilter. Oh, he murdered a bunch of people, but he didn't see himself as a human so it's okay?

Reading the wikipedia entry on his character from the book, he is even more pathetic and pitiful. But it seems to book fleshes out the character a bit more.

Well, he is a sad character. But that's my point entirely. There is nothing decent about him, nothing admirable or worthy of a crush. It's like these people that admire and obsess over real serial killers. What the hell is wrong with them that they have to go obsessing and even admiring serial killers?! Serial killers are defective human beings, they barely even qualify as being that much human. Why would anyone view them as anything other than pathetic or disgusting?

I have to say, the character is sad though. I mean, he is just so pathetic. It doesn't excuse what he's done, but it can't be denied that he is pitiful.

I think she crushes Patrick Bateman because he fuuuuuudgeed a woman with a knife and she wishes she was that woman. I don't friggin' know.

He knows how to treat a lady.

Quit mixing movies!

But kimopo is right. There is almost nothing positive about Bateman's life. He matters to four people, and that's it. No one else knows who he is as a person. He's just a face they see, and that's the world he lives in. Almost everyone is unknown. He cannot make a real connection with any person, and his desperate desire to do so paints him as a sad character. The book made me nearly sick, but during his introspective moments I felt for him, and I felt like I had a window into a world I would never see. I can't imagine working at a place where my presence was unnoticed.

You a tad bit sociopathy.

My therapist when I was younger said I had the personality traits of a soicopath in the sense I can't understand that the things I do can hurt people. That's why I don't think I do anything wrong. I'm not playing stupid, I actually am.

Ah. I was not expecting to be addressed as kimopo. It's a little creepy because I have no idea who you are and because we're discussing a psychopathic serial killer O_O please don't kill me...

I've worked in a place like that. It's called walmart.
