Comic Book Discussion Thread Vol 7: Salvation

Greetings True Believers,

The purpose of this thread is the discussion of comics (as well as anything related to comics) and comic book news. Every Monday (or Tuesday) Scruffles will post the comics that will ship each week. If you are new to comics you can ask for suggestions here. We would like this thread to be as new-reader-friendly as possible. We would not like to see this thread be deleted, so we have made a few rules:

  • No flaming or spamming (Just ignore the tools who come in here and start making fun of comics and comic readers). Those who do flame and spam will be reported.
  • Discuss comic books and comic book related things (Conventions, movies, cartoons, video games, collectibles, etc.)
  • Post news as long as it is related to comic books
  • Reviews (warn before posting spoilers)
  • Don't bring up a debate like Hal Jordan vs. Kyle Rayner or Marvel vs. DC. It just leads to non-stop fighting and nobody wins and we will pound and heckle the crap out of you
  • And please regulars, let try our hardest not to go off topic for like six pages.
Just remember to have fun and talk comics. And....

COMIC BOOK GURUS ASSEMBLE!

Crazy is as stupid does.

We have 10 more posts in the other thread before it's lock bait.
SwimSpecte: Clinton was a sexual monster who raped several women but used his office of president and his supporters to threaten and harass them into going away.

Mom, guess what I learned in school today.

Well we'll have this one here waiting for when that happens.  Or everyone could just make the jump now to save time.

1st Look: The Thanos Imperative #4

Looking at that first two-page spread, I can almost hear **werd**-kicking, dramatic theme music as "The Galaxy's Mightiest Heroes" arrive to lay the smack down.

Off today to pick up the last four weeks' worth of comics....I realized that I really have scaled back on my list, since it took this long for there to be enough issues in to make it worth the gas money to go get them.

Something just popped into my head today, totally out of nowhere.

Where does General Ross' mustache go when he changes into the Red Hulk, and how does it come back when he reverts to human form?

A friend of mine speculated that Ross shaved off the mustache to help keep his secret, and we've only been seeing the Ross LMD with the full 'stache and not the real Ross since World War Hulk.  But I've seen Hulk #23, which shows him reverted to normal with a full mustache, and then changing back into a non-mustached Rulk.

And it can't be that his increase in size "spreads out" the spacing of his mustache hairs, and they're too small to see on the Rulk's larger face....because if that were true, why doesn't the same thing happen to the hair on his head?  Ross' mustache has almost always been pronounced and bushy, and roughly as thick as the hair on his head.  His scalp hair either grows during the transformation or is thick enough to still be distinct as Rulk, so why doesn't the same thing apply to his mustache?

I know that this all boils down to one huge uber-nerd nitpick--but I also think this is another example of how poorly conceived everything involving the Rulk concept is.  Honestly, the only real reason that the mustache vanishes and re-appears is that Loeb didn't want to give away Rulk's identity with an obvious clue, and just hoped that no one would notice this small but distinct detail once the reveal was made.  Either that, or Loeb simply had no idea from the very beginning who Rulk really was, and didn't pay attention to that detail when he decided to make Ross the culprit.

Whatever way you look at it, I think it makes Rulk even more laughable when you realize that the creators can't even be bothered to deal with such a simple and obvious detail.  It's not like Thaddeus Ross hasn't been mustachioed for virtually every appearance he's made in publication.

I honestly wondered this myself.  I do believe Loeb had planned to have Ross as Rulk all along.  I think it's like you said, Loeb just didn't want to leave a very big hint.  I guess they could make the argument that the Red Hulks go through even more pronounced physical changes than the green Hulks.  They could use Betty as an example too.  Her hair gets longer when she changes and also gets that red stripe going through it.  It's comic books dude, they'll always have an answer.

Alright, we have January Jones playing Emma Frost and Jason Flemyng apparently playing Azazel, for some reason, in X-Men: First Class.  Then I read this last night http://movies.ign.com/articles/111/1114975p1.html.  Now we know who Kevin Bacon is playing.  I have a hard time picturing it though.

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #4 $3.99
DEADPOOL TEAM-UP #890 $2.99
HEROIC AGE PRINCE OF POWER #4 (OF 4) $3.99
X-FACTOR #208 $2.99

Prince of Power's wrap-up is going to be a bit anti-climactic, since future solicits and such have already spoiled that Herc will be back for sure.

On an unrelated note, continuing to pass on love of comics to the younger generation--gave a 9-year-old the first volume of Bone for her birthday.  Hoping it's a hit, both for the above reason and because It gives me a fallback for future birthdays and Christmas.  Now I just need to figure out what to give her older sister now that I and another friend have given her all the available trades of Runaways....

Anybody ever hear of Elementals?

From the 80s I think. Great comic.

Meh, it wasn't that big of a surprise that Herc was gonna come back.  Hell they had already revealed that he wasn't really dead well before they announced Chaos War.  The story and writing has been great and that's all that really matters.

I plan to start my nephew off on Bone when he's older.  He's only 2 right now so his reading skills aren't quite there yet.

I've honestly never heard of it.  Of course I didn't start reading comics till the 90's.  Is it from the one of the big two or is it an indy book?
