Once, tornado - in an area that is not known for tornados. But it was more of a moment where I wish I had a rope - and could rope it.

I did a thread here about EAS once.  Basically, I just quit paying any attention to EAS soon after they started using for mundane, totally obvious crap that isn't anything a sane and rational person would call an emergency.  It used to be reserved for the most extreme stuff such as enemy nuclear missile launches.  Now, "Its raining" or "It's hot outside".  No sh!t... really?  I could have just opened a window to see that and why does it have to be announced like it's some huge emergency?  Wake me up when Chinese nukes are headed my way.

You're right.

The EAN was never activated during 9/11, because the media outlets got immediate coverage of the events. It just goes to show you how incompetent the FCC is if they couldn't respond to it in time.

It's mostly used for local stuff now. It works as a good warnin system for those in the Midwest, but not too well other places

After the recent hacking of an EAS encoder in Montana, I am becoming convinced that it's a useless system.

But whatever.

Working at a radio station overnight.  Wicked storm blows through fast.  About 20 minutes later, the freakin' weather alert cube finally screams to life (I thought it was off), scaring the daylights outta me.  Thank goodness I didn't have the mic open or a couple choice obscenities would have made it on the air.

Got to say it's always scary when the EAS interupts QVC.

So now I've been a member of the ASMB for 9 years.

the EAS encoders have a specific time set it operates at, due to the severe hardware limitations. but within that time cap, they can play the EAS as much as they want to.

The FCC and FEMA need to rework the EAS/EAN so it's not ambiguous and scary.

Take a look at Japan's warning system. It's not pee-your-pants scary, and it's much much more helpful at putting out alerts. Not to mention they don't cut the program out to blackness and puts you on the QVC channel when it's finished.

I thought you lived in Florida, so no, you wouldn't have seen the EAN message in New York.

oks.

First off. The EAS or EAN was never NEVER activated on 9/11. I scoured the internet for any footage of authentic EAS messages on 9/11/2001; nothing came up. FEMA, FCC, and the White House pretty much confirms this too.

I never lived in Florida.

It makes a sound kinda like a sci-fi ray gun and then vibrates a ton before it makes a high pitched screeching noise.

But you weren't in New York that day and you're not 100% sure that it did or did not go off.

I can ask my family from New York if they saw any that day.

Even if local authorities sent out an EAS on 9/11, it would've been documented, recorded, and uploaded to Youtube because it would be an important part of this country's history.
