I think that honor goes to the Centurion. Russian military kept the light/medium/heavy structure up until they introduced the T-55 I think in the mid 50's.
You know the Chechens had a unique method I read about where they'd take out Russian tanks. One would come up, in a suicide attack, fire an RPG or other rocket launcher @ a weak pt on the tank, make a dent, this guy gets mowed down. Then the next guy or gal does the same thing, same spot. Dent is bigger. And so on. After about the 4th or 5th RPG to the same spot it craters in the armor & then the next one blasts into the tank, taking out the tank crew.
So much for Russian efficiency.
I bet the Chechens are thanking us for our Panzerfausts, predecessor to the RPG:

Well @ least they're being realistic.
It'd be hard to get to a depot or armory with mobs of zombies wobbling around. U use what you can find in a Dawn of the Dead scenario.

I wonder if a .22 to the head would take out a zombie. If that's the case a .22 would be the best zombie weapon ever, perfect combination of economy of size, weight and availability.

Most anything will kill with a point blank shot to the head.
Advantage of a .22 is that it usually doesn't exit the skull, just tumbles and stops after doing a massive amount of damage. You would still need to get fairly close, though. Within 30 yards or so.

If that's the case then all these shotgun-toting rednecks in zombie movies are really going for overkill.

Much better hit/kill probability with nine 00 pellets than one .22LR.
Or you could go with a solid slug and put whatever you hit into next week even if you miss the head.

Stripdown of a Fedorov Avtomat
The Russians beat everyone to the assault rifle concept by a good 20-25 years. Select fire, intermediate rifle cartridge (it used 6.5mm Arisaka), compact size, detachable box mag with 25 rounds. Chew on that, Westpark.

Too expensive and complex, also they didn't have a cheap to produce cartridge made in house so it was tied to supplies of Arisaka ammo. Not a great strategy when the Japanese are one of your chief rivals in the region.

Demonstration of an Arsenal AKM equipped with Bumpski stock
Totally legal fully automatic conversion for about $450, no ATF rigamarole. For now anyway. I'm sure it will probably get banned/regulated eventually.

They are working on replacing the M16/M4, I know that Delta has already been using the HK416 (which is an H&K adaptation of the AR platform mechanically similar to the G36) and the 7.62 x 51 version of the FN SCAR is seeing limited deployment by other Special Forces branches.

the Hk416 is considered part of the M16 family, and the M16 is fine if you follow what the designer said to do, like chrome the barrel and chamber and gas tube and use the right powder and ISSUE A #### CLEANING KIT. anyway i would take the M16/M4 over the AK.

i want the M16, but then again mine are chromed everywhere it needs chrome, and most of the problems with the m16 can be solved with Chrome and a good magazine.
