Before you try this then, go to download.com and search for diagnostic utilities, or google it.  You need to run one to see if the motherboard is all your dealing with.

 Well, the computer wasn't displaying anything. I put 3 video cards in it to no avail. Maybe I should give up on it, even though it has a clam shell case.

Is that the only harddrive in the system? And I'm guessing you are running XP

If you are running XP:

While the computer is booting, press F8 before Windows starts to get to the boot options menu. Select "Disable automatic restart when system crashes" or similar message (I just saw it a minute ago and forgot exactly what it said). Select that and it should keep the error message on the screen (I had to do it many times when my motherboard on my laptop failed). Write down everything on the "STOP:" line (near the bottom) and also what file/et, if any, are indicated (near the top; I can't remember what exactly it says there)

You caould always scrap the parts and keep the case, then build your own computer using new parts and the same case.

 Well this computer is for my mother, who is totally technologically retarded. I'll keep the computer just in case though.

 All the parts in the computer i'm typing on (the twin of the problem) are from a 544 MHz dell Piece-of-Crap, so they're already third hand, no fourth, no fi-sixth hand parts (i've had many junk computers).

hellomunkey333: Are you sure you (or whoever else you got them from) haven't accidentally damaged something by mishandling/electrostatic discharge/etc? Just a guess, since it's been a long time since I have messed with hardware

 No, I had difficulty putting the Memory in, I probably cracked the board. I also had just put in a video card on accident that was bad. That may have done it in.

forcing the memory could have done it, did you make sure to unlock the slots before putting it in?  and if there aren't any, slip the memory in one side at a time.

It shows 10 boxes instead of the text, like this [][][][][][][][][][] (I tried pasting them and they turned into question marks in the graphical editor)

Probably just a bug, not some hidden political agenda. It'd probably work for any other sentence of the same length.

That's the explanation. I just tried Gore also and it did the same thing. Apparently it is supposed to show Chinese letters, which is what I was thinking it does, and since I don't have that font/language pack installed it just showed boxes. The words "hides" and "hid" can both be used, the only difference I have noticed being the number of boxes that show up
