Essentially, I plugged a cord in from my power supply to the motherboard that ought not to have gone there.

Can you share an internet connection between computers with a crossover cable, or are you only able to share files?

The situation: I've got an older, hand-me-down laptop that I would like to set up in a network with my PC; both run Windows XP SP3.  My cable modem has two ports, USB and ethernet, but the ethernet is connected to my Xbox, so I connect my PC via USB.  I really don't want to bother with a router, for two reasons: one, you can't seem to find a non-wireless router in stores these days, and I have no trust in my own barely-tech-savvy abilities to set up a secure wireless network....two, I live in an efficiency apartment, and the PC, laptop and Xbox are set up within 10-15 feet of each other; I don't see the point in shelling out for and setting up wireless if it's possible to connect everything with a few relatively inexpensive cables.

I finally upgraded to Firefox 10.  Anybody know how to swap the url bar and open tabs?  I don't like the tabs on top.

Also, can I get rid of the Bookmarks bookmark on the toolbar?  It's in my menu, why do I need it taking up space on the toolbar?

Finally, I can't log in to Netflix in Firefox.  It started months ago with not being able to access any of their contact pages, now I can't get past the new member sign up screen.  I get a message that says it's trying to redirect the page in a way that will never complete, and maybe it's because of not accepting cookies, but I have it set to accept cookies for Netflix, and it's doing this in the old 3.xx version as well as the 10 version.  I don't have any trouble with Safari, but what's Firefox's problem?  I've cleared the cache.  What else do I need to do?

Any time my laptop tries to use Windows Update, it fails hard. Today, I decided that after failing an update, I'd try to restart my computer as it prompted me to in order to see if it would fix itself.

Now it can't get past the "Welcome" loading screen without freezing up on me. :smileyindifferent:

I was using a Windows 7 Toshiba laptop, which is as much info as I have right now. <_< I don't know where the papers are. Can you help me, please? ;_;

I downloaded Firefox yesterday just so I can see what's going on. It's been a while since I had it last. Now it reminds me of Chrome.

I was able to log into netflix with no problem at all. I was able to remove the book marks button by right clicking the top of the browser, selecting customize and dragging it off into the box.

I'll look more into it after getting of work later on today.

mash F8 on startup...

you should get a screen similar to this...

with your laptop, there should be an option to "repair windows," choose that...

you want to either repair windows or choose a restore point...

restore point is your best bet...

use this guide to get you the rest of the way...

good luck :robothappy:

Thanks.  :smileyhappy:  I should probably tell you I'm on a Mac.  I don't have a right click, but clicking control and the bar doesn't bring up that option, just some things like copy, paste, add separator, properties, sort...

Yeah, the menus are completely different.  But I did find some help under View and got the tabs off the top of the window and got rid of the icons on the bookmark toolbar.  :smileyhappy: Thanks for that!

Edit:  Bah, getting rid of the icons on the bookmark toolbar apparently also gets rid of them on the navigation toolbar.  Also, I don't know how to make my customizations the default, so I have to make all changes to each window separately.  :/  Really, really stupid.

It looks like what you did was ax the whole bookmarks toolbar, but I want the toolbar, I just don't want Bookmarks as one of the bookmarks in the toolbar.  :/

The customize area has Bookmarks as something I can add to the toolbar, and says that to add or delete I just need to drag it on or off the toolbar, but if I click on the Bookmark bookmark it pops down the whole bookmark menu whether I click and hold, or comand click option click or anything.  I can't drag it anywhere.  And since it's not an actual bookmark, I can't delete it from the list because it doesn't show up as one.  It's just annoying having it take up so much space on the bar and punting stuff I use to the side menu when I don't need it there.

Oy, I tried going over to mozilla's help forum to see if they had any insight, and ran into the oddest setup for a help forum I've ever seen.  As far as I can tell, there's no main forum page, with topics, or any sort of sectioning, and trying to do a search only seems to bring up the websites own help pages, not user solutions.  All I can sort by is date and whether or not it's solved.  I really don't have time to page through thousands of pages trying to find a relevent posting.  >:smileymad:(((

This is why I'm always so reluctant to upgrade anything.  It invariably makes me want to tear out my hair and rip somebody's head off and set it all on fire.

I'm having trouble with a mouse.

It's a "Fierce Laser Gaming Mouse" from Rude Gameware; I got it as a gift from a relative.

It worked great for a few weeks, then it started freezing nonstop. The freezes became more and more frequent until the cursor just wouldn't move and I had to bust out a less fancy, but functional, mouse.

If I plug the gaming mouse in now, it will work for ten minutes or so, then start freezing more and more, and windows won't even recognize it in the front side USB ports.
I contacted the tech support, and they were fairly helpful, but I haven't been able to solve the issue. I could just RMA it, but it seems like it works on other computers, so I have a strong feeling this is just a software issue of some kind.

I've had this problem with mice in the past, and I never really know what causes it. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Not a bad mouse. Weights are nice. I'm assuming you installed the software that came with it? Really I doubt that's the issue because mine worked just fine without the software. I just couldn't program anything or use the precision aim. It still worked as a normal mouse.

Just to make sure, what's the USB on your motherboard and what does the mouse have? Ya gotta be looking at either a 3.0 or a 2.0 because I know you have a nice computer.

Pretty sure I'm plugging it into a 2.0, but I can't look back there real easily. I know this motherboard has a couple 3.0 slots.

Any way you can take a screen shot and showing me what you want gone? I don't think macs have a print screen button so you might have to find some kind of program for that.

You can take screen shots on a Mac, but I can never remember the keys for it, so I just use SnapNDrag.  :smileyhappy:

Here.  The little >> mark should be the last thing on the bar, showing that there are more bookmarks than will fit.  The Bookmarks is a dropdown menu I don't need or want there.  According to mozilla, it's supposed to be on the navigation toolbar by default, not the bookmarks bar.  So I don't know what it's doing there, and they won't tell me how to get rid of it.  :smileyhappy:

With the toolbar layout(Still under options), I was able to drag the book marks icon back beside the start page icon without taking the book marks bar with it. You have to be careful where you drag it or it'll give you the bar back.

Here, this might be for games, but well, we'll see.  After downloading the skyrim hi-res pack, and then deleting it and reinstalling the game a few times, my AMD hd radeon 6870 ( I think that is about right) graphics card still only registers as low quality on the default graphics option for the game.  Fine, but before I installed the pack, it registered on the game as high quality.  Also, even with the hi res files deleted, I am getting problem with flickering character textures that were not prevalent before, and clipping ground textures at times.  Funny thing is, after I turned off the aliasing and jacked up all the background visuals, the game is running fine with no issues.  My question is, did the simple fact of installing the hi-res pack changed the parameters in regards to the game and my graphic card even though I deleted said files?

Thanks in advance.

Why can't I even though know anything else do about it?

Those should really just be textures, they should change the way skyrim detects your graphics settings...

You might want to check for an update to your graphics drivers.

Thank you!!  It worked a little differently for me, but from your screenshot, I figured out that I could drag it off the navigation toolbar if I got rid of the bookmarks bar.  Then restoring the bookmarks bar didn't bring it back.

If it had just stayed put on the navi bar where it was supposed to be, I probably would never even have noticed it, but it was driving me crazy on the bookmarks bar.

Still don't know what the problem is with Netflix.  :/  I called them and they didn't know either.  :smileysad:

Found this.

"I was having the exact same problem. But I followed step one of Ashiyawolf suggestion and that was enough to get mine working again. Thanks a lot!
"1. Go to Firefox, then Tools, then Options - select the Privacy tab - click on Show Cookies - scroll down and delete the cookie folder for netflix.com "

Remember that you have to click options and not just hover over it.  When I did it, I had to click, "Remove individual cookies" and found the netflix folder in there.  I deleted it just to be sure that I could.

Ok, finally got it to work, but I had to go through my list of a bazillion sites to find the handful that belonged to netflix.  I'm too tired now to explain why that was so difficult, but it took about half an hour.

Anyway, thanks!  You're a mensch!

<_< Wish I noticed this sooner. I got so fed up that I just replaced Windows with Ubuntu.

But now, Ubuntu's a bit clunky. Any Ubuntu linux user can give me tips to make it faster? I switched to 2D mode, but I'm not quite sure what to tweak as far as graphics go. :smileyvery-happy:

I've confirmed that this isn't a problem on other computers. Given that, it seems like this has to be a specific problem with this mouse on this computer. I'm thinking the driver software got corrupted somehow. So I'm not too keen on RMAing the mouse if I'm just gonna have the same problem with a new one because of a software bug.

Is there any way to thoroughly remove mouse drivers from your computer? I have uninstalled them with add/remove programs, but obviously that hasn't done the trick.
