Really though, I do that too, at times. It's called codependency. It's not really selflessness. Just a passive kind of selfishness learned from having to help everyone else and ignore your own needs. It's no bueno.

I try not to be but @ times you have to be to stay sane.

I probably would have killed off my peers in grade school. I was a big, angry child.

I'm surprised I never bullied anyone.

I was raised in an environment where if you didn't grab for yourself, you went without. With that in mind, I can be quite selfish because it's a part of the ingrained survival skills thing along with high pain tolerance and the ability to throw sharp things with accuracy.

I still have weak spots in that philosophy though. My kitten is spoiled rotten and she's what gets me up and out the door to work every day whether I'm feeling really up to it or not because she needs kibbles and toys [the 'keets too to a lesser extent] . And every fall I try to get as many backpacks as I can and donate them to the United Way for their school drive because I didn't have nice new back packs when I went to school and it sucked.

But I don't give anything to the bums around here anymore because most of them are just scum who throw away anything that isn't money or smokes anyway. Real homeless wouldn't throw food away.

A large majority of bums just want drugs or booze. i give them sandwiches and tell them to call 211. I've met too many to fall for their tricks.

I'm less selfish than I should be. Doomed to have perpetual Giver status. Still, I have many self motivated moments. Like earlier I cooked dinner and hurried to grab the most delicious looking piece of chicken before anybody else got a grip on it. MINE.

More like Darwin's School for the Perpetually Hated. The principal was a Korean War vet who drank cough syrup and didn't particularly care for the first one to be 'enrolled' into the 'school'.

I used to give food but they would just toss it in a drift the second they thought you weren't looking. I'm not going to waste my money on food they aren't going to accept.

I go from being a selfish prick to being an idiot who frivolously gives away his time and money.  Giving isn't my strong point.  I always wonder if I'm giving for the right reasons.  Am I doing it so they like me?  Am I doing it so that I can feel good about myself and say I tried to help? or am I doing it simply because I have the ability to help.

Selflessness has always been my ideal. I've had to learn to be more selfish in order to stop giving to the sort of people who will take everything.
But if someone proves to me that they aren't just trying to use me, then there's almost no limit to what I'll do for them.

And I'm kinda proud of that.

If someone doesn't apparently have anything to gain, they are helping because it makes them feel good to help. That's how humans are. No one helps just because, and if they do, I pity them for missing out on one of the greatest joys in life.

I'm still a 3 year old when it comes to my food.......Everytime we go out to eat "somebody" always wants to taste mine.......And every time it's "No, stay away from my plate"
