Camera phones are the bane of a photographer's existence.

I wouldn't call myself a photographer. I'm as amateur as it gets.

What PS effects did you use? It looks really neat.

That's some good definition for a cell phone camera. But if you want really amazing definition, use a real film grain camera. There's nothing like it.

Being able to control aperture and shutter speed helps too, for a variety of effects. It's all about balancing how much light is coming into the camera depending on the subject and effect you want to achieve.

I've been playing with the shutter speed, and I must say, I'm enjoying myself trying to find the right balance between that and the ISO. However, the aperture is giving me a hard time in that I don't quite understand it. The whole point of it is to get one object into focus, and the rest to be blurred, right?

I play with everything, really. I mainly go for the shadows and highlights-- but there's an effect called "cross process" (the hipster filter) that I really like, if only because I think it gives pictures a dreamy quality to them. But I try to use a bare minimum of it.

Yeah, it's an HTC Android phone. It's pretty good for taking pictures, but that shot benefits from fantastic natural lighting.

So where is the picture of you tucking your hammer between your legs?

Why can't I even though know anything else do about it?

Yeah.

It's called the "circle of confusion". Generally, the higher the f-number (the smaller the aperture) the greater the distance in front and back of the point you are focusing that stays sharp. Opening up the aperture allows more light in and narrows the distance.

If you don't give your shot some depth, the subject becomes indistinguishable from its background.
