That's some good definition for a cell phone camera. But if you want really amazing definition, use a real film grain camera. There's nothing like it.
Being able to control aperture and shutter speed helps too, for a variety of effects. It's all about balancing how much light is coming into the camera depending on the subject and effect you want to achieve.
I play with everything, really. I mainly go for the shadows and highlights-- but there's an effect called "cross process" (the hipster filter) that I really like, if only because I think it gives pictures a dreamy quality to them. But I try to use a bare minimum of it.
Yeah, it's an HTC Android phone. It's pretty good for taking pictures, but that shot benefits from fantastic natural lighting.
