Renters proscribed from voting, an opinion.

[ Edited ]

Well, thank God, I no longer have to be hassled about voting ever again.

Why can't I even though know anything else do about it?

“The Founding Fathers… put certain restrictions on… the right to vote… you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense.”

except that was to stop freed/run away slaves from voting. these are the people America voted in?

I'm actually surprised, seeing as how most Tea Party Advocates and republicans are poor themselves.

What a ridiculous idea.

I don't think we should go back to a property requirement. Back in the day we had a wide open frontier and land was relatively cheap, but in many places in the country real estate is out of the price range for even middle class Americans.

What they need to do is revoke the voting rights of people who consume more in welfare than they pay into the system via taxes.

Exactly. The poor deserve no rights.

If they want to have a say in what happens, they should get a job that pays enough, rather than two which don't.

Why not disenfranchise the entire states that do that? You know, the ones that receive more in government benefits than they pay in through taxes? I mean, as long as we're being completely arbitrary with no regard for the constittution, why not?

Every time I read about Tea Partier who's like this, I struggle to search for the right noun or adjective to characterize them.

Every time, the only thing I can come up with is "assh0le."

It's worked well enough, so far.

Judson Phillips spewed:

“The Founding Fathers originally said, they put certain restrictions on who gets the right to vote. It wasn’t you were just a citizen and you got to vote. Some of the restrictions, you know, you obviously would not think about today. But one of those was you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense, because if you’re a property owner you actually have a vested stake in the community. If you’re not a property owner, you know, I’m sorry but property owners have a little bit more of a vested interest in the community than non-property owners.

In other words: as a mere renter who obviously doesn't give a sh!t about the community I live in, I should stop shopping at stores in my neighborhood and supporting local eateries. I oughtta quit volunteering my time at, and donating to, local charities. And why prevent the foreclosure of this apartment building by paying rent in the first place? I need to quit paying, get other renters to follow suit, and let a bank seize this place. That'll help tank property values around here.

Nevermind that I chose this neighborhood over all the others (& there are many in this city) to live in, or that I want to maintain anything about this community. Man, fck this community.

Andrew Jackson needs to rise from his grave and beat the tea partiers with an old hickory stick, then send them down the trail of tears.  How dare they try to rollback his greatest accmplishment, extending the vote to every white male, not just those who own property and meet wealth qualifications.

I think they should take voting rights away from the ultra-wealthy, since they already have more than enough influence on the system through lobbyists.

I can get behind that proposal.  No more Republicans in the White House or Congress ever!

i was hoping, for the tea party's sake, that the article would be something about restricting voter registration to the last place you lived that was not a rental property (as in, i rent living space at college but i'm registered to voe in my parents' district). i could almost get behind something like that. almost.

of course, i was wrong, and that's not the case at all. fail.

the entire idea is fail, regardless of whether or not my hypothetical is out there. i was just stating what i hoped the guy was getting at, which was not at all what he was actually getting at.

so, to answer your question...my, what a lovely pair of trousers! say, how might one go about procuring such a fine article of clothing, if one were so inclined?

Am I allowed to have an opinion about some **grok** wanting to take away my right to vote?
