But I wouldn't even call it popular. It's more like Watchmen in a sense. It has it's fanboys but that's it. It's not popular at all. Tbh I had never heard of the comic before I saw the trailer for the movie and just busted out laughing when I saw Michael Cera playing the same cruddy role.
And by Watchmen I meant all the people who wanted to see it, saw it in the opening weekend. It's box office fell apart after that.
Same here, the people who are going to see it, have seen it.
You, kind of completely turned around what I was getting at.
As in, just because The Expendables made more money doesn't make it a better movie.

All that it tells me is that it's always a bad idea to go by popularity. Transformers 2 was a big box office success, yet I wouldn't touch that movie with a 100 foot pole. Not that I should compare The Expendables to Transformers 2. The Expendables looks decent enough in a clichéd sense and I would watch it if I were at a friend's house and they had it running on their TV, but nothing I'd spend money on. Scott Pilgrim looked better to me, but not to the point where I'd defend it against The Expendables. The Expendables only won out because of star power. Nothing wrong with that. Nobody would makes movies with a boatload of well known faces if it never equaled success. Star power and commercialism always wins out over storytelling. Also helps for the movie to have auto-tune, I mean, CGI.

This sounds about right.
The Expendables looks like a good popcorn flick. But to me, Scott Pilgrim looks more interesting.

sorry i misread what u were saying.
but i can't agree. i don't understand what's so original about it.
the only thing that really jumps out at me are the graphics and effects. And Sin City and 300 really did enough of that for me.
tbh -- it looked like a hipster wanted to use cgi effects on an emo comic film
the story is horribly boring and simplisitc, considering i've read so many critics calling expendables simplistic.
he fights his gf's 7 exes, all of whom dress like they walked out of hot topic.
i don't see the point/get the attraction.
the whole floating musical notes thing -- watch any michel gondry film -- almost like a rip of his effects work

and I thought this was another thread

What's more interesting?
There is nothing there in the way of plot.
The girl imo at least isn't really that hot. Michael Cera can't act and is basicaly reprising his role from Youth in Revolt.
In fact, you wanna know what this film reminded me of? One film.
Speed Racer. The horrible acting. The trying to make the comic effects look real.
I think it's cheap and too gimmacky tbh.

The whole thing seems like it was done with tongue firmly against cheek.
I like tongue in cheek.
Really though, stop calling everything emo. It weakens your arguments.

both are basically fight movies.
but what would you rather see?
michael cera fighting a hot topic lesbian and a couple of idiots(save chris evans) who look like they dress like the geico cavemen
OR
stallone and statham doing their thing.
at least the expendables is plain-spoken and honest about what it is.
i think spvtw is a directionless movie. it can't decide if it wants to be superbad, kick **werd**, eternal sunshine on the spotless mind, nick and norah, or something else entirely.
if that's what some people call original -- w/ever floats their boats i guess.
at least expendables tells you what it is and when you walk out of the cinema -- you get what you paid for.

well cera dresses like an emo. the girl has emo hair and dresses like an emo kid.
tongue-in-cheek?
maybe but i don't get the humor. maybe the fight scenes are for the fanboys but it's not my forte or thing.
Kick A-- did pretty well at the box office. Or at least double what this was, and it was rated r for crying out loud, which is usually a death-nail for comic films. usually rated r films do HALF what a pg-13 film does.
this movie is a cult film and it's fanboys and fangirls are just coming out in droves to be advocates for it.
if it were as good as everybody says it was, 2 things would be true --
one, the returns should be at least double what they are. it should have opened minimum at around 18 million. second, the demographic audience was too concentrated. it's basically a movie for those 18-23. Even a lot of people in their mid and late 20s are turned off by it. it's a very very niche film that doesn't appeal to anybody. i would even say probably a lot of the younger teenagers can't get into this as the culture is changing.
a lot of the music and bands that are big in this are 2005-2008ish. This was filmed a year ago or so and so the styles and music are fast becoming outdated.

i see what ur saying.
people are talking vague. lol
i just don't get this. none of my friends could relate either to the clothing styles or the music. some of the movie critics said they felt 'old' by seeing this but i'd say it's more that they're viewing a movie heavily influenced by bush-era nick and norah type music. bands that thrived on myspace and music downloads. indie bands and such.
a style fast going out.
in fact i'll be 30 soon. i don't even know what's going to be big in the coming years. music and culture are chaning so fast.
another reason why i love expendable -- it shows some things never change. and that some stars still can make darn good movies eh?

You're really generalizing things here. Much of the charm of SP comes from the take on it. This would be any other romantic comedy if not for the fact that the main character didn't have such a hyper-esoteric Nintendo-fueled worldview.

Hipsters. Learn the difference. This wasn't two hours of teenagers wanting to cut themselves.
Oh yeah, and you're totally ignoring the Canadian influence.

i think it's a very demographic-centric movie. if u aren't in the nick and norah scene you probably aren't going to like this...

pretty much to anybody about aged 25 and up -- pretty much the same thing.
this is really odd to me because in the 90s and even the early 00s many bands that weren't necessarily industrial or metal rock still got music played on rock radio.
most modern rock stations won't play arcade fire or the strokes

Bah, returns don't mean anything in terms of quality.
Office Space did terrible in theaters, and that movie was absolutely brilliant.
Cera doesn't dress emo, having blue hair isn't emo.
I'm pretty sure Beck was involved with all of the music, and he's certainly been around longer than 2005.

maybe it's regional. where i live i actually put in requests before for even quasi-hipster bands like the strokes and franz ferdinand and they wouldn't play em'
i asked about arcade fire or interpol and they laughed at me. srsly

That girl is emo, at least where I live that's emo. Maybe it's different in cali or whereever ur from.
office space was a cult film that blew up on dvd. i doubt this will do the same.
you never know though
