So will salt, sugar, fat, and pretty much anything else that makes food taste good.
Actually, eating at all isn't great for you. Neither is breathing. (all those carcinogens in the air)
Death rate in American= 100%

I tried abstaining from sugar and alcohol. I had a pepsi, two white russians and a shot of vodka yesterday. And this morning, my belt is an overloaded dam from all that sugary goodness. No regrets.

What, exactly, is "premature death"? If you don't know how long a person was destined to live, how do you know when death is premature?
Apparently the best longevity diet is eating next to nothing, literally. To consume only enough calories and nutrients to keep you alive. The people who do this look like concentration camp survivors, but they seem to be long-lived concentration camp survivors. The only question is, why would you want to live to 150 or whatever if you could never eat anything yummy?

To die a sweat filled coronary induced death while trying to polish off a 3/4 pounder with extra cheese, and a double order of chili cheese fries is my god given right..........I'm not letting some "red meat scientist" deter me from that goal.

I was listening to the news when a bit about this came on. And I was getting really annoyed, because the language they used was stupid. They didn't refer to eating red meat as increasing your chances for early death, but just death in general. As if dying is something we can avoid.
As the saying goes, eat right, don't smoke, exercise - and die anyway. I'm going to die knowing I enjoyed my life.
Now pass me that steak!

Being alive increases your chance of dying by 100%
Statistically speaking, being alive is more fatal than eating red meat.

My aunt was a vegan who died of thyroid cancer. She ate a lot of soy.
http://thyroid.about.com/cs/soyinfo/a/soy.htm
So, I can't believe these medical doctors are actually pushing soy, and saying red meat is bad. Most people already understand that red meat is bad...and my guess would be that this study's conclusion isn't so much dependant on red meat as it is American's poor diet in general (and most people with poor diets also happen to eat red meat). Until they can prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there are actual carcinogens in red meat that are causing this, I'd take this with a grain of salt.
But honestly; a study that tells us that fish and poultry are healthier than red meat? How interesting.

Haven't we known for 20 yrs or more that red meat leads to heart disease, higher blood pressure etc?
I thought this was common sense.

I heard this in NPR yesterday and I was surprised not because of the story, but because they said it was a recent study and I already knew this from way back.
I mean nitrites are bad for you?
No #### sherlock.
It does make you wonder who is funding these inane studies.
Next they'll be telling us that heroin is addictive and that we should probably avoid running with scissors.
