Because they're angry.  They show that anger by squatting on a patch of land they don't own and making fools of themselves.

They're angry because they don't have enough to eat while just on the other side of town, I can easily go into a convention center and pay more for a tapestry of Pai Mei than they wish they could spend feeding five kids for two days.  They scream and shout obscenities that everything is so carefully stacked against them and how unfair it is that somebody has a few million or I have a few grand laying around while they can't even get ninety bucks ahead of next month's bills.  They complain about big corporations and write their complaints on iPads, Blackberries and laptops that wouldn't exist without corporations - such things they chose to buy instead of stocking the pantries while the credit cards that were issued to them by the banks they hate so much get ramped up further and further into some incredible debt they'll never pay off because they'd rather be drinking and partying on somebody else's land than doing any work.

Way to generalize. Although yeah their is a lot of that going around, their are quite a few people that barely live pay check to pay check that don't live above their means or have any credit cards. But stay classy.

It's about the statement. Simply gathering and voicing dissatisfaction is what political action is to many people. When you examine the crowds that gather at these events you'll see a very diverse bunch of differing classes, ages, and social groups.

It's not fair to say these people are hypocrites for advantageously using technological means to organize, and spread their message, as that is a reflection of the times. Also, not everyone is exploiting such resources, word of mouth and media coverage which are free of cost is still a significant contribution to their efforts.

Protesting Is a difficult animal to control purity of. You have those purists of antiestablishmentarianism (never thought I'd get to use that word), you have those peoples that feel unheard, and you have those people are bored and show up because they want to be a part of something, but don't know what.

People like to focus on the facets that confirm their comfortable bias, despite these biases rarely painting an accurate picture of the event. What I see in these recent movements like occupy Boston, and occupy wall street, is the signs and posters are all over the place. You have people angry with the banks, the corporations, the government, the wars, oil prices, and I believe I saw a free Tibet picketer. There is no organization to the dissatisfaction or common message. No solutions offered on mass to tell authorities what people want to happen. Only echoes of the past decade drowning out any common message. They need a central focus and leadership to focus and accentuate attainable goals. The people have no idea what they want, so authorities have no idea of what we want.

My focus in NYC last Friday was all about the Comic Con, nothing to do with what went on elsewhere in town.  If I want to know what's going on at an "Occupy" rally, I just have to tune my radio in.  I have no intent to be anywhere near an Occupy event when it goes off like the big powder keg in Rome.
