Players are returning from summer breaks, owners and coaches are talking expectations, and fans are ready to see some goals, hits, and fights. 

Training Camps are days away for a majority of the league and the pre-season is only a few weeks away. 

So as the season starts getting going what are your predictions for the year?   How does your favorite team look?

Woah boy.

This doesnt sound like its going to be good. it really is starting to feel like "Im not playing this year" which is terrible for the NHL.

THey desperatly need to get concussions under control. Hopefully the fact that their poster child may not skate at all this year wakes them up to just how bad of a problem they are.

I for one don't care if he doesn't play this season. All I've had to hear about is Crosby and Ovechkin and I am SICK OF IT!

WHile I agree that it **beast** to hear nothing but two anouncers choking on crosbys junk, he is good for the game.

Between him and Ovie they have single handedly reached new markets and enspired another generation to become hockey players.

I may hate him for how he plays, but i love him for what he does for the sport. He actually gets the NHL mentioned on ESPN, which is impressive lol.

Towes would be great and so would Kane. But then so would Duchene from the Avs or Tavares from the Islanders or any other of the new age young guns who are just amazing to watch.

Its just they picked those two because its a great rivalry and if they both stay healthy they will both break records and get to the hall of fame. No guarentee of that from anyone else, even your beloved Towes

Even if it was a concussion and wasn't his fault, he's not on the ice.

Though to be serious.........Caps are winning the cup their year. They fixed their biggest problem and got a goalie who knows how to win and has been deep into the playoffs only to lose (TO MY AVS BABY!!! :d:d:d in the final game. They are looking scary.


Also expect Flordia to make a push actually. THey did some smart stuff in the offseason this year and really got good.


Vancouver is going to struggle this year I think. The utter stench of failure after having such a lead in the finals is going to weigh heavy on them and Luongo is going to choke. Either that or theyll be pissed and run the table and ill be glad im in Japan cause i wont have to deal with their bull**beast** cup run

plane crash in Russia takes the lives of a few former NHLers.

Among those are Brad McCrimmon who was an assistant coach for the Red Wings since 2003. He just took the Head Coach job in Russia in May.

Also, Ruslan Salei who played for the Wings last year.

Just sad, sad news.

Agreed. This has been a summer to forget. Also, a former member of the Dallas Stars was among the victims of the crash: Karlis Skrastins.

There's also this: NHL players react to tragedy on Twitter. I think the Tweet by Sharks player Ryane Clowe said it best: "Hearing the tragic news about the Russian plane crash almost brought me to my knees.. So so sad and unfair. Prayers go out to all the families."

In other, and hopefully lighter news, the Winnipeg Jets unveil their new jerseys. There's a photo gallery, but it's separate from the story itself. You can click on it here. THe more I read about it the more sad it become and the more angry I get. Hasnt enough been taken from the hockey world already this summer? What else has to be given before were allowed to go on and love the sport of hockey.
Skrach was a Av for a few years as well. He was solid on our D-Line. Same with Salei. THe Avs lost 2 former players today.
The hockey world has lost far to many players, fathers, husbands, friends and good people this summer.

The season needs to start so we can talk about something good.

I just looked to see if Salei really has passed, and sure enough, he has. My God, what a horrible day. Anyway, you're absolutely right. This summer has been extremely tragic.

I found out at work just as the news came through and they only named McCrimmon.  Driving home, the radio news had 3 other names not listed in the article that I remember from their time with the Hawks.  This is just horrible.  I usually worry during the winter that something like this will happen to an NHL or NFL team that's flying during bad weather.

We'll find out what happened eventually. Most if not all passenger aircraft carry flight data recorders for a reason. (Not trying to be snarky, sir. Just wanted to reiterate that.)

I dunno. 

I really think the Caps can do it this year.  They fixed their single biggest issue in the offseason when they signed Vokun.  He can, and has in the past, put the entire team on his shoulders and huffed it into the playoffs.  He has never had the offensive tallent in front of him that he does now and the players will play different knowing they have a well established goalie behind them.  I really think that the Caps can do it this year.
