Call the police. Even if they aren't able to do anything if this person we've never heard about:smileywink: won't press charges, at least you'll have something on file in case the worst happens. And then slap the silly ####.

I'm gonna side with everyone in this thread who says "call the cops." I would've called them right after getting her call about being kept there against her will. I might even have called from my cellphone while en route to her location.

Related story, because this thread reminded me: Once upon a time, I was at a friend's place when her crazy ex-boyfriend busted through her front door with a gun and punched her halfway across the living room. She wasn't expecting him to show up at all and apparently he expected her to be there alone. I stupidly stood between them (he was several feet away, still near the door) to shield her, picked up a nearby phone, and dialed 911 while he kept the gun pointed at me. He ran out when I started talking. I guess he didn't think I was really calling the cops til then.

I swore to myself I'd never do something like that again because I'm not trained for those situations and, you know, both my friend and I could've been shot dead. I don't know if I'll ever do that again. Won't know til I'm put in another situation like that.

But I don't recommend it, unless you bring 2 or 3 equally crazy-protective friends to the rescue with you.

That sounds like a hellish day you had, but I'm glad your human shielding worked.

OP: I would have called the police after she hung up the phone, even if she did get herself into the situation. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if somebody I knew got hurt or killed because I didn't do something when I could have.

I've thought about lying in wait in some dark alley to kill people that have done that.  but then I think, "No, that would be wrong."  plus they can trace the bullets back to your gun.

Better to call the cops.

Depends on the dynamic......If I care for this person, I round up a few of the crazier family members, and we go play dentist.........If not, then yeah, her problem.......I might eke out a call to the police.

What good does calling the police do when she's the submissive/battered-wife type? Even if he goes to prison she'll still be loyal to the idiot.

If I had been u I would have called the cops, but only because I didn't like the guy. No other reason.

First I would wonder why the hell I know such crazy fvcking people, then I would call the cops, then I would go to the place with some kind of legally carried licensed weapon and make sure no one is dead before the cops show up, shooting the guy in the leg or shoulder if the situation required it within the confines of legally justifiable self defense.

Also, if he didn't have any kind of weapon I would just beat the ever loving crap out of him.

If it were my sis, or some one else I cared anything for (I'm straining to imagine anyone else) the breaking point when the psycho "ran off" would have been long before this incident. If I knew she would be going over there, there would no be no discussion over someone escorting her.

One of two things would happen. I would either call the police, or have my own "talk" with that man.

And by talk, I mean a savage beating. The only reason I wouldn't kill him is that I love my family too much to risk losing my time with them. Which is why I would likely call the cops.

That guy is piece of crap and has no place in humanity.

There usually is no logic there. Its 'BUT HE LOVES ME!!' sorta crap.

I wouldn't call it being a hero. It is more a loss of emotional control. That kind of abuse is shocking. And the fact that they guy has her so scared, it would be harder to remain in control. I don't have a sister, but I got a daughter. I imagine that self control and logic would a long way off. But I also hope I instill a strong sense of confidence in herself and give her the judgement to not be trapped by a psycho like that.

Really, calling the cops is what you do. That guy would be in serious trouble. If he isn't stopped, there is a good chance that someone is getting seriously hurt, or killed. Beating him, while a worthwhile venture in itself, wouldn't stop him. Only a long stay in jail or death will stop a guy like this.

The dynamic at play seems to be along the lines of "if I don't go, he'll rape me to death then hurt my family." It sounds like the guy has systemically abused and terrorized this women. She might even see herself as his property. There are some confused feelings that could be called love, but the driving force is more the fear short circuiting logic, which would end this.

Beating the guy would do nothing but give him the opportunity to play the victim and stay out of jail, while you, get a trip there yourself for assault. Aggravated assault at that if it were as terrible as everyone is saying they would make it.

The guy is a piece of ####, but we have police for a reason.

Like I said, going to the police is the logical choice. It is easy for Md to say that, removed from the situation. But emotions can easily override logic, in the moment. It is not logical to attack him, as it would have a negative impact long term.

But hearing that story in person, I do wonder if I could keep in control. The desire to mete out some personal justice would be there. It would be a question of whether or not logic and clear thought would win out.

If you personally were ever in that situation, think about your daughter and how you would explain to her what you did. How you'd explain why you would be gone for a while while you are in prison. Aggravated assault sentences aren't a joke.

Once again, I am not saying I would beat him, only that it would be a strong desire which might override rational thought. Emotions are strong, which is why an appeal to emotion is so effective.

My point is that stopping yourself from lashing out can be hard. The further away this guy is, the easier it is to calm down. If he lives next door, there might be enough time to stop a heat of the moment reaction.
