She honestly doesn't look Indian, even though she is part Indian. I can understand both sides of the issue here, but if there are no rules stating that the contestants have to be 100% Indian, then she should be allowed to participate.

I'm part Cherokee, yet I have no discernable Cherokee features. It would be the same as my trying to participate in events for Cherokee people.

Yes and no. From a cultural perspective aesthetics have rarely been an issue for native American ceremonies, at least in my experience. Whats different here, and I think most people can see it this way even if they don't agree, is that this is a beauty contest. It's something that by its nature one is primarily judged on their aesthetic quality. If one doesn't look Indian enough even though their heritage isn't in dispute, then the winner being distinctly recognizable as being Indian is important to those wishing to promote a specific image. Their level of attractiveness is tertiary behind heritage, and looks.

the irony I suppose is that fair skin and light features are standards of beauty that are celebrated among south asians...I'm willing to bet real money that the other contestants are the whitest girls they could find.
