A summary of the episode
Jirōbō Ikkanzaka agonizes in pain as Orihime continues to stare at Uryū in awe, saying that he seems a totally different person from the one fighting Hollows with Ichigo that day. Uryū asks Jirobō if he is feeling any regret after meeting him, a fellow projectile user, but Jirōbō calls him insolent, getting up abruptly. Uryū fires two more arrows both missing. Uryū tells him that he had missed on purpose just now and the next most certainly wouldn’t miss. Jirōbō then praises him as incredible: his speed, power, and accuracy are all better than his. He never imagined that he would face this caliber of opponent saying "he has been utterly defeated". So he tells Uryū to take him and do with him as they pleased. Uryū puts away his bow and Jirōbō asks if that means he is letting him go, but Uryū replies that he is a Quincy with no sympathy for Shinigami. Still, he does not enjoy tormenting the weak. He tells Jirōbō to disappear quickly, as his bow disappears as well, before he changes his mind. Jirobō says that he sees that Uryū is a kind man, but… that will be his death. He suddenly stands once more, but Uryū is faster than him, preempting what he will do, saying that if Jirōbō is unable to beat him, he will at least kill Orihime or take her hostage.

A summary of the episode
Hanatarō’s way to get to the Shrine of Penitence is by way of the underground water tunnels that run throughout the whole of Seireitei and would allow them to go anywhere unobstructed. Ganju asks if the other Shinigami would know of this place, since all they did was to lift an ordinary floor tile. Hanatarō replies that only the Fourth Squad, specialized in relief and supplies, know their way around the maze of tunnels, though not because they use it as supply routes, as Ganju had imagined, but because, being the weakest Division that gets all the chores pushed on them, cleaning here is also their job. Ganju comments that the Fourth Squad must be incredibly pathetic, but Hanatarō giggles and says that it is not too bad. Ichigo asks him why he is so willing to help them, despite their being his enemies. Hanatarō quietly replies that he had heard all about Ichigo from Rukia and turns his head to face Ichigo, asking him to please save Rukia.

A summary of the episode
Renji pulls back his sword and tells Ichigo that he's stronger now than the last time they fought. Ichigo stumbles to his feet and picks up his Zanpakutō, announcing he feels fine and has no intentions of being beaten. There is a silent, tense moment, and Ichigo is clearly injured. Ganju and Hanatarō urge him to reconsider, but he refuses, trying to get his wounded senses under control. Renji sees this weakness and attacks. Ichigo barely dodges and Renji says that if Rukia had never met Ichigo, she wouldn't be in trouble. Ichigo flees to the roof and Renji follows closely.

A summary of the episode
A flashback to the previous episode of Renji's defeat at Ichigo's hands. He falls to his knees, vision blurring, as Ganju and Hanatarō witness the end of the battle. Renji looks up and envisions Rukia, and has several flashbacks of her. He reaches out and regrets that he didn't go after her when she left.
Rukia slide tackles the man pursuing Renji and his friends.
Then the scene switches to Rukongai and Renji narrates, explaining that each district, North, South, East and West, has 80 districts, with district 1 having the highest standard of living. As a child in the 78th district of South Rukongai, Renji explains that he was essentially "the lowest of the low." Renji as a child and some of his friends secretly strap a man's foot to his table, who is selling goods and swatting Renji and the others away, and steal some the goods he's selling. They run from the man who loosened the strap, and Rukia comes from nowhere, knocking the man down and leading the kids away. She is a child like them, and Renji announces this as the day he and Rukia first met. Renji gives her some of the candy they divided up as their loot. Before she can eat some, she sees an older child steal the candy of a younger one. The child wrestles it back, but it spills everywhere and he begins crying. Rukia boldly approaches the older child and scolds him. She then offers her own candy to the child and then walks outside. Renji runs after her and finds Rukia sitting in a tree happily, teasing Renji for coming and looking for her.

He decides to eavesdrop on Urahara, who questions if he's been getting enough excercise lately. His assistant offers him a product, and while they are distracted, the kids decide to leave.

As Chad gets closer and closer to the White Tower, his presence and actions are noticed by the Eighth Division's Lieutenant Nanao Ise and Captain Shunsui Kyōraku. Shunsui decides that it is time for him to go out and fight. Nanao argues that it is not necessary for him to fight and that the strength of a lieutenant would be enough to defeat one Ryoka, but Shunsui tells her that he has orders from Head-Captain Yamamoto to engage the Ryoka and assures her that it will all be over soon.

He asks how he was carried all the way away from the battle and Yoruichi changes form to reveal she's actually a woman and not just a cat. Ichigo senses that Ganju and Hanataro are in danger and uses Yoruichi's flying device to go after them. Yoruichi tries to call him back but fails. Meanwhile, at the tower, Byakuya and Ganju are fighting. Byakuya learns Ganju is a member of the Shiba clan and tells him he can't allow him to leave alive. Ukitake tells him that it is a forbidden act to release ones Zanpakuto in that area. Byakuya tells him that due to the circumstances, he is allowed to do so. He says he'll do anything to save her and that she can yell at him after he defeats Byakuya. Summary:
It is night, and Orihime and Ishida have stopped for the night to sleep. Orihime is attempting to heal Tsubaki. Ishida and Tsubaki both assure Orihime that Tsubaki will be healed. Orihime and Ishida decide to leave later, and Ishida reflects on how Orihime is not suited for battle. They later leave the safety of their hideout, and are stopped by a drunken member of the 11th squad leaving a bar. They claim that they are from 11th, but he recognizes the patch Orihime is wearing as one belonging to the 12th squad, not the 11th. 12th squad members save them, but Ishida is suspicious, as the 11th squad member had every right to suspect them, even though he was drunk. Ishida rescues Orihime just as Kurotsuchi presses a button and attempts to blow them all up. Orihime manages to put up her shield to protect herself, Ishida and the 11th squad member, citing that if Ishida had not pushed her, they would all be toast. Ishida gets mad at Kurotsuchi because he blew up his own squad members, but Kurotsuchi tries to recruit Orihime as a research subject. This just makes Ishida madder, and Ishida uses his powers as a Quincy to threaten Kurotsuchi. Kurotsuchi recognizes Ishida as a Quincy, but claims that his research on Quincys is done. Ishida then orders the 11th squad member to take Orihime and run away. He does so reluctantly, and Kurotsuchi tries to bring them back with his mechanical stretchy arm. Ishida decides to pick a fight with Kurotsuchi by shooting his mechanical stretchy arm.
Meanwhile, Aramaki (the 11th squad member), is forced to knock Orihime out as he runs away. We see him hitting her in the neck, and continuing on his journey to wherever he's going.
Kurotsuchi takes off his arm, and then injects himself and grows another arm. Ishida decides that he should take out Kurotsuchi first, and Kurotsuchi praises his talent as a Quincy. However, as he wants to get to Orihime quickly, he decides to kill Ishida quickly. Nemu decides to step in as they begin to fight, and Kurotsuchi attacks Nemu for trying to step in. He slashes Ishida in the shoulder when he attacks Nemu, and is impressed that Ishida is not in a lot of pain. Kurotsuchi tries to kill Nemu because she asks to be treated, and Kurotsuchi says that she will not die no matter what he does because he built her. Ishida tries to get up, but realizes that he cannot move his arm. Kurotsuchi explains how his Zanpakutou works (he cuts off the opponent's ability to use his muscles, but leaves the pain receptors intact. Basically, the opponent is paralyzed but can still feel pain--a lot of it), and Kurotsuchi taunts Ishida about his "Quincy pride", and tells Ishida about his research on the Quincys. Kurotsuchi claims that the last one was an old man, and Ishida realizes that it was his Sensei/Grandfather, who taught him all about being a Quincy. Ishida releases his power, and swears on the "pride of the Quincy" that he will kill Kurotsuchi.

In another flashback it is shown that his grandfather gave him the glove he is currently wearing, the Sanrei Glove. It's explained that this glove can grant a Quincy a vast amount of power, but that they will lose the rest of their power afterward. Back in the present, Uryu notes that he is at the limit of Ransotengai. He apologizes to his grandfather for disobeying him and removes his glove. An explosion of reiatsu occurs, and he begins absorbing the reishi of the buildings around him. After Maryu's left arm is removed by one of Uryu's attacks, he releases his bankai. He fires a powerful arrow at Maryu and his bankai. Maryu has a hold in his torso and his bankai has been ripped in half. He stabs himself with his sword and turns into a liquid, which allows him to escape. Nemu gives Uryu an antidote as thanks for not killing Maryu. Uryu takes his leave, knowing his powers are gone. On his way to the tower he encounters Tosen. Tosen tells him he must kill him for the sake of peace.

Captain Kaname stands before a wounded and powerless Uryu. Musing on the ryoak invasion and the senseless fighting, he draws his Zanpakuto and releases it, incapacitating Uryū. Meanwhile, Yoruichi explains to Ichigo Kurosaki that it takes well over ten years for even talented Soul reaper to achieve Bankai, but that she has a way which will help him achieve it in only three days. She reveals a spirit-transfer doll that draws out the spirit of his Zanpakuto into their world. As he achieved a draw with Kenopachi, Yoruichi believes that he is at the level of materialization. She explains that he has to defeat the spirit of Zangetsu in three days. Zangetsu summons hundreds of Zanpakutō, disperses them all over the battlefield, and tells Ichigo that there is only one that can defeat him: Ichigo must find the true Zangetsu and use it to defeat him. Sentaro and Kiyone are present at Hanataros disciplinary hearing. Retsu, his captain, decides that he is to be punished in some way for aiding the Ryoka, but his punishment is not revealed. He later voices his misgivings about his actions to his lieutenant, Isane. Meanwhile, Renji is having flashbacks about Rukia, and decides to break out of his cell and go save Rukia.
Izuru, lieutenant of the 3rd division, is also sitting in his cell in a straitjacket having flashbacks about his brief battle with Momo, disgusted with himself for drawing his sword against her. His captain, Gin, walks in and offers to let Izuru out. Back in the underground chamber, Ichigo coughs up some blood, and Yoruichi yells at him that there is not any time to waste, and to get up. Zangetsu threatens to "make" him get up.Back at the 11th Division headquarters, Makizo is groveling at Yachiru, lieutenant of the Eleventh Division because she found him carrying Orihime back to the 11th division headquarters. In a stupor about what to tell Yachiru, he explains that Orihime had the ability to "bubble out of walls" and that he was bringing Orihime to see her, and Yachiru is highly entertained by the thought. Ikkaku and Yumichika inquire about Ichigo, and Orihime mentions she believes he is alive. A bandaged Kenpachi hopes that this is the case too, so that he can fight him again, and he decides to aid Orihime, citing that if he sticks with her he will likely run into Ichigo again.
In a 4th Division holding cell, Ganju, Uryū, and Chad are in a prison cell. They talk about why they have been treated, and Chad mentions that they are probably being kept alive because they are suspected in Sosuke Aizen's murder. They have no way of escaping, as their reiatsu is sealed by their handcuffs, and they conclude that Orihime, Ichigo, and Yoruichi are all out there somewhere, and that they will just have to find them. Chad makes the decision that they wait.
Back in the hidden training ground, Ichigo is still losing his fight with Zangetsu. He finds a Zanpakutō that looks exactly like Zangetsu and he doubles back and swings at Zangetsu, who shatters Ichigo's sword and slashes him across the chest. Zangetsu explains that Ichigo relies too much on Zangetsu, and that that sword represented the frailty of Ichigo's heart. Ichigo concludes that he must find his strength among his weaknesses, and defeat Zangetsu.

Rukia's Nightmare
[adult swim] air date:
September 15, 2007
Opening Theme:
D-Technolife
Ending Theme:
Happy People
Season:
3
Summary:
We once again enter Rukia's dream, and it is Rukia's first day as a Shinigami. The other members of the Thirteenth Division taunt her behind her back because she was adopted by the Kuchiki family and exempted many of the exams to join the Gotei 13. Lieutenant Kaien Shiba shows up and sends the gossiping squad members off to work again. She greets him with a lame greeting, and he gives her a hard time about addressing him properly, and after she greets him to his satisfaction, he asks for her name. Rukia is impressed at the fact that he treats her normally, unlike other people, who treat her differently because she is Byakuya Kuchiki's sister. Kaien then introduces himself, and mentions that his captain, Jūshirō Ukitake, is sick a lot, so she can call him captain "by accident." Later, Rukia meets with Byakuya, and tells him that she does not at the time have a seat because of her power. Byakuya is indifferent about her situation, and dismisses her.
