Come on, Irene! Oh, I swear! What they mean!
At this moment...you mean everything!
I asked your mother for you.
She told me you was too young.
I wish to God I'd never seen your face
Or heard your lying tounge.
Irene, good-night Irene.
Irene, good-night.
Good-night, Irene. Good-night, Irene.
I'll get you in my dreams.
(The original Leadbelly lyrics!)
ZOMFG!!!!!!!!! i.. i didnt know anyone else knoew of that song!! me mom use to sing that song to me.. sometimes when iw as little as a lullaby.. or just around the house.. yay memoriez ^__^
A lullaby? Did she sing the original lyrics? The first verse is about love for an underaged girl. The final verse, as originally written by Leadbelly:
I love Irene, Lord knows I do.
Lover her 'till the seas run dry.
And if she turns her back on me,
I'll take morphine and die.
It's not my first choice as a lullaby. The most famous version of the song was recorded by The Weavers in the late 1940's or 1950's. It was a hit for them, but they changed many of the lyrics to a more of a "PG" rating. That is the version most people know. The original words are much more interesting!
Is your real name Irene?
