In his first appearance in Awesome Show when he talked about eating fruit, he seemed to have a bit more going on in his head aside from Jan and rocket ships. Sure, he mistook a banana for a squash, but that's a common mistake. At least then he knew when an apple was mealy. Even when he had that chart of his BMs, he could organize something like that and present it fairly well.
Dr. Brule became way more panicky after thinking Wayne was dead, so maybe that began his wine-drinking problem and led to him not really knowing where the camera was anymore.
I think we first saw the current Dr. Brule in the Griddleman infomercial. He was so Brule-tal that he didn't even recognize bananas as not a spatula.
I love our Dr. Brule nowadays, so it's weird to see how he used to actually pronounce words without extra r's. FOR YOUR CRUNTINITY!

My personal theory is this: Steve can only keep it together for short periods of time.
Early on, Steve had short appearances. They usually only took up 30 seconds.
It's in the LONGER bits that we see hints and traces of Steve's insanity, that something might be different i.e. 10 years in Journalism/Report on Cool Cars, Report in Wine Country, Living on your Lonesome, the Fashion report with the Mood Indication Machine, Panini segment featuing Cathy Mitchell.
And now, with Check It Out, which is basically one big character study, Steve is the prime focus. We're seeing more of him, and that includes the ugly and tender sides.

Hahaha. Poor Steve. He's pretty far-out. His intro-rap for the 'Space' episode was f'in crazy. I love it.

Dude.
Space opened up with a quote from Moonman Kneel Aurmstrong.

I always loved his introspective meditative thinking moments of Season Cinco, I think that's where he truly lost his ability to process knowledge normally, those were dark.

oops. I was once lucid too. I think I meant the "Money" episode. I'll have to watch them all over again.
edit* . . . yep. I just checked, it was the "Money" episode. He was quoting lines from his favorite scene from
"Cold Hard Cash".

yeah. I forget where but it's mentioned somewhere that the show is sourced from old rare tapes from 20 years back (hence the production quality).

Really? Post a link if you can find it. I just figured it was just public access-style.

I just wanted to say that in that scene where Steve sings "Farmer in the Dell" while his mom plays the piano, the timestamp says 1989. So you'd think the show is set in the 2000s, yet put together using a VCR.
