I REALLY hate to agree here, but I've been wondering that too. They completely changed the whole character. He's supposed to be a goofy, whacky guy who sometimes stutters over his speech while he tries to figure out how to explain what's going through his head.. Instead, he's semi-mentally retarded and has slurred speech.
He's supposed to be awkward-not mentally challenged. The "Tim and Eric" Brule had me rolling every single time. The "Check It Out" Brule has me digging to find something funny.
Remember the #1 rule of comedy-it's all about the presentation. There are good jokes and gags on Check It Out-but they're just not presented well.
If you watch the "Tim & Eric: Awesome Show, Great Job!" episodes from the beginning of season one to the end of the last season, you will notice the change that occurs. As the seasons go on, Steve Brule becomes more like he acts in "Check It Out!" This is because of the way John C. Riley has worked his way into the characted mentally. In an interview with Tim and Eric, Eric Wareheim even said himself that John C. Riley actually gets very into his character and zones out in a way where he will improvise a lot of the stuff in "Check It Out!" I believe that this is the reason the character is different from what you saw on the Awesome Show. He seems to get more comfortable with the character every time he acts as him.
I find "Check It Out!" to be pretty funny, but at the same time, I knew from the beginning that the show wouldn't be lasting long. They really were bound to run out of things to do with it. I've always loved the Awesome Show, and I think it leaves them plenty of breathing room for random skits and ideas, which they don't always get with Steve Brule. Regardless, Steve Brule is an excellent character, and Heidecker and Wareheim are geniuses, even though a lot of people fail to see the sense of humor involved. I didn't at the beginning, but after a while I started to love it, and now I can't get enough. What ever they decide to do is going to be fine with me, and I'll watch anything they direct or are involved in because it's always great.
It's aboxa balloons.
