Random is just the non-literary term for what they called "surreal" 70 years ago.
Neely comics were originally hosted on the now-defunct Superdeluxe.com, but you can find all of them on Youtube on brad's channel, TheRealBradNeely. Originally, it was just Babycakes then it branched off to The Professor Brothers(the unofficial stars of China, Il). The two were never explicitly tied together but would make brief appearances in the other's shorts until Neely created the original China, Il pilot in 2007ish. The pilot was split into four parts so it would be like the previous web shorts, but also told a ~24 minute story that could air on TV as a 30 minute block. The pilot was more like the original comics in that they weren't really animated in any traditional sense and were more like a talking slideshow of sorts.
I highly recommend anyone check out Brad Neely's comics on the youtube channel. They're absolutely brilliant. Sadly, I don't think the show has quite made it up to that standard yet(but then again it's not trying to be the same exact thing which is respectable). There's also a series of 30sec shorts called America Now that are amazing and a few one-off cartoons including a super early one about George Washington that includes two characters that were clearly the basis of the Prof Bros.
Also, Brad Neely made an unofficial narration of the first Harry Potter movie called "Wizard People, Dear People" that is great. It's also on youtube in it's entirety.
Yeah, I've been watching Neely's stuff for a while now. Here's a great place to start(Babycakes in group therapy):
