This is not the least bit surprising to me.  I was wondering if Bandai was in more dire financial straits than it appeared.  I guess my hunch was right.  They've been skimping on quality releases in the last few years, and frankly this may be a good thing.   If they're not able to give us the quality we deserve, they shouldn't be a player.  If other companies step up and deliver what we want, we'll quickly forget Bandai.  As we should, if they're really down to two employees.

You're one of the lucky ones.

Sometimes I wonder if Bandai got a beetle smushed into their DVD burner at some point and just decided to half-arse cleaning the guts off before starting the production up again. Most of the discs I've gotten from them are good except the Geass ones had issues and I've heard from others that have had bad disc issues on various other series.

Come to think of it, the only one's I've ever had trouble with have been Bandai releases. Those being Eureka Seven and Witch Hunter Robin.

I've had discs act wonky on other companies, notablely Funimation [the previews and titles dance for some of the Yu Yu Hakusho and Shin Chan discs], but I've been able to determine that in those cases it's not the discs it's my set-up that's too anal. I've got the VCR, DVD player and it's converter, GameCube and cable line routed into a tv that's 25+ years old. :smileyvery-happy: It gets fussy occasionally but I'm able to test the discs on my computer too. If it plays on there, it's good. The Geass ones, however, honk.

And thank you! That totally reminds me that I better get to Best Buy in the next few days and see if they can order that set for me directly to the store [fingers crossed they can and the discs are good] before Bandai completely empties it's warehouses and cuts off retail orders. I've been playing the lotto with that set being in stock when I'm there but at this point, there's no more waiting possible.

The one good this about this is that some other company could pick it up and put it out on Blu Ray.

I had this same problem (though only with the first DVD set of season one).

I had this same problem (though only with the first DVD set of season one).

I have some slight problems with season one, volume 2.  The disc freezes up twice during episode 9: once during the opening credits and once towards the climax.  It's always the exact same seconds that freeze.  I just wait the time it takes for the player to skip ahead and I only lose about 3 seconds the first skip and maybe 20 seconds the next.

Yeah, it was either episode 8 or 9 on the first season that did the skippy crap for me too.

And warning out there - the same type of crap is happening with the Gurren Lagann set I ended up getting instead of Witch Hunter Robin [Best Buy could only buy something like the middle disc of episodes which I'm not going for - no point in getting the middle when the likelihood of getting the rest of the series is going to be questionable]. So far the last half of disc one is mega-skippy starting at the second to last episode and going through even into the special features. Ugh. Why couldn't it have been like my Cowboy Bebop discs - 1,000,000 plays and still works just frickin' fine? -.-;

If people go the R2 complete route, let us know if you got good discs or bad.

I had problems on episode 9 as well (something about that episode, I guess...) as well as one of the ones on the first disc (episode 3, I think).  Amazon let me exchange that DVD set for free, though, and I have had no problems with the replacement discs.

And that's too bad to hear that the Gurren Lagann ones are no better, glitchy discs really ruin the moment and distract from hot mech-on-mech action.  >_>

I know Bandai was once giving out replacement discs for Code Geass.  Not sure if they were doing it for their other series or if they even are now, but it might be something to look into.

With them closing out, it's rather iffy. :smileysad: That's one of the reasons I prefer getting things at a local physical store rather than ordering online, the possibility of returning it and getting a replacement through the store. The other reason being that if I'm getting anime locally, they'll see there's an interest and keep a selection in stock.

I'm going through the discs slowly but steadily to see if there's any other problem discs or if it's just the first one. Then I'll go from there.

Physical stores are a thing of the past and slowly but surely going out of business.  This article may elaborate on a specific case, but their problems are other retailer's problems.  And if you're looking for good customer service regarding returns and replacements, amazon.com is usually great about such things, unlike Best Buy (from the article, but I've encountered the same things).

I own all the original releases for Code Geass (including R2) and never had any problems besides the one episode I mentioned.  I'd be surprised if the Anime Legends release has any other problems besides the early discs of season 1 which caused problems for a good portion of the people who bought it.

Which is the exact reason why all these companies are laying people off or going under.  People who are too cheap to support the industry and think they have the right to steal and pirate anime shows. Fansubs and illegal internet streams are killing the industry here in America.

And that doesn't help those of us who prefer dubs.
