I always thought he was just so starved to have a real family that he was willing to go as far as he could to make sure that he continued to have that family. Anything that might jeopardize that family tie needed to be dealt with which is why he went the way he did in the series.

The Geass children seemed to be thrown into a sort of institutional situation where they had adults and all but no real 'kin' to speak of. All he ever had were assassin assignments to look forward to and then he gets an assignment to just be a kid for a bit with a real 'big brother' who would only see him as a brother. He got to have a family tie.

That and he could have been gay. Japanese anime is nothing if not strange at times.
