Cowboy Bebop Flea Market Find!

[ Edited ]

I figure I've probably had every possible conversation about Bebop that I could conceive of or want to have, years ago during the golden age of the ASMB.  Well, that would mostly be correct.  However, last week I went to a new flea market in a town nearby, and actually found some decent stuff!

Keep in mind, it's new.  So, the place was practically empty.  I imagine these things are much better after they've been established for a few years.  This one was indoors, in an old Wal-Mart, actually.  So yeah, seeing a building that huge being mostly empty is... quite unusual, to say the least.  Still, there was one decent vendor there selling CDs for a dollar, and DVDs three for a dollar!

I picked up the Cowboy Bebop Sound Track, The Movie, and the first two "Sessions!"

I'll probably feel like a fool when I look on Amazon and see the whole box set for 20 bucks, or something, I'm sure.  But I figure hey, 10 episodes is 10 episodes, right?  Plus, they had the movie, which I've never even seen!  I noticed the OST says "O.S.T. 1"!  That means there's more!  And of course, they drip fed only a few of the best songs onto the first one!  THOSE BASTARDS!  Still, a pretty respectable find, eh guys?

What sort of cool Bebop stuff n' merch have you guys found at garage sales, flea markets, or second hand stores?  Or hell, maybe even used online in some cheap capacity, or maybe even a nice deal from the official sellers?

Yeah there's a bunch, I hated how they put The Real Folk Blues on an entirely different album with only 5 other songs rather than the first OST like you'd figure. There's a few others; OST 2 ("No Disc"), OST 3 ("Blue"), Vitaminless (TRFB's on there), Future Blues (movie OST), and Cowgirl Ed

Wow, didn't expect a reply that quick.  Thanks for the information!

Wow, good grief!  For a short series, they sure stretched and milked out the money-making oppurtunities, didn't they?  It's going to be a nightmare if I ever want to get the other great songs on CD...

Yeah, I noticed there are actually 6 of the "sessions" and not just five, as I thought.  It might be easier and cheaper for me to just get the box set anyway (and it's practically "On-Demand" on Adult Swim, lol), than to track down the other four sessions wherever.  Still, they were so cheap, I couldn't resist!

1998 was a great year, eh?  Cowboy Bebop comes out, wrestling is at the height of its greatness in the Attitude Era, Beast Wars: Transformers is in a great season, and countless others I can't think of right now.  A bit off-topic, but I couldn't help but find an excuse to rave on this too, lol.  Plus it is still technically Bebop-related.  Will there ever be a better year than 1998? ...NOT LIKELY, METHINKS!

They weren't milking it, there's just that much music from the series. I know I have some duplicates, but I have at least 150 tracks from the series and movie on my computer.

I've gotten pretty much all of the soundtracks (with the exception of Blue and the Limited Edition Box Set) from randomly finding them for cheap at Vintage Stock. A lot of them ended up being bootlegged versions. Does your OST say it was distributed by Pioneer? It might be a bootleg too if it doesn't. I don't know if you could really find a legit version of the soundtracks anymore anyway though.

Your local Best Buy probably has the Anime Classics box set of Cowboy Bebop for 20-30 bucks.

That's right.  While there are some duplicates, there is only one CD that's nothing BUT duplicates (that's the one I don't have).

The REAL O.S.T.s are produced by Victor Entertainment.  If it's not from Victor, then it's a boot.  You should still be able to find them online if you search by catalog numbers. I have them all on my blog.  If you google them you'll get a site that sells them.  They're in the neighborhood of $30 apiece last I looked (at least if you are in the Americas.  They ARE imports. :smileyhappy:).  Except for the real box set, I got them all off amazon.com - people are buying and selling them and don't know they're boots.  I contacted one seller asking about it - turns out he and his family are huge fans and didn't know what they were selling were bootlegs, so they removed them from stock.  It's a mess.

I don't go to many flea markets, so I don't have any finds from there.  Man that WOULD be something else to see something Bebop related at one! :smileyhappy:

To clarify: I'm a chick, ok? And I'm a hugger. And I call people "honey." That's just how I talk (really). I live in the South (if you consider Florida to still be the "South") and it's what comes out of my mouth and hands on the keyboard.

What is "Vintage Stock"?  Is that some sort of store I've never heard of?

Anyway, it has a pamphlet and everything.  Everything's here.  It has people accredited to in it as being from Victor, but I don't see anywhere that explicitely says who put it out.  It says FXCD-006, for whatever that's worth.  I see a logo that says "fx" and has some weird reddish circly thing around the fx.  Though, I'm sure more than one company put them out.

Am I really going to have to put the battery and SIM card back in my BlackBerry to get to the bottom of this?  Taking just this one picture and getting online was enough of a pain.  The phone speakers went out in it, so I'm stuck with a crappy Go Phone until March when I get my upgrade.  Everything else works... okay, in it, though.  But yeah, getting this picture to show was an ordeal, as I said... lol.

The blog looks interesting.  I'll have to check it out when I get more time.  It's wrasslin' night, haha.

Maybe I will post here more, meganaraku.  It's just that I've seen Bebop so many times an discussed it to death years ago, I'm not sure there's much more I could say.  I do think I might want to check and see if the Bebop threads in my subscriptions from way back when ever got moved over here.  I get the feeling they're probably still in General Action Discussion.  I see there's a thread for just that purpose at the top of this folder... hmmm.

20-30 bucks for the whole series?  Figures.  I knew I should have passed on the Sessions.  Still, they were only 3 for 5 dollars (plus I now have the movie that I still haven't watched yet, though I listened to the CD), and they're pretty cool.  Session 1 has Spike's bio on the back, and Session 2 has Faye's.  Seems like somebody had unloaded their Bebop collection.  I just wish the rest of the Sessions had been there.

Interesting to hear back from ya'll, in any case.  And thanks for the tips on finding stuff.  The thing with flea markets and such that is good, is you're more likely to get a good deal from someone who doesn't know what they have, and also you can better check to see if something works or is legit.  You can still get screwed over in person, don't get me wrong, but it's not as easy as online.  Though finding things online has its benefits, as well.  This is the first one I've been to in years, and I'm hoping to go to more soon.

Vintage Stock is a store chain that buys and sells used and new movies, CDs, video games and such. I don't know how wide spread they are, so you might not have any near you.

Oh okay.  I'll look into and see where they are all located at, and whatnot.  Sounds cool, if we have some in Texas.

I take it you don't want to contribute to the soundtrack authenticity investigation? :smileyvery-happy:

Oh, I'm in Oklahoma and we have them in a lot of places here, so there might be some in Texas.

Even after many years of buying anime soundtracks and so forth, I'm still not too knowledgable on what marks obvious bootlegs. Pirates have gotten very good at making their stuff look legit. All I know is, if you can't find Pioneer's name on it with the copyright information, it's probably a bootleg. But the OSTs aren't in print anymore I don't think, so it's not like your money could be going to the actual artists anyway. :/

Oh okay.  I'll keep a look out then.  I forgot to look it up again.  I can't seem to get any sleep this week though, either, I swear.  It's been a crazy week...

I believe you meant Victor.  In any case, it looks very legitimate to me.  It has a pamphlet with tons of credits and stuff and lots of information.  People are accreddited to in it as from being from Victor and other various legitimate companies relevant to Cowboy Bebop.

Supporting the musicians is something I fully agree with and try to do when I can when it comes to music, but even if it is out of print, I still want to have the real thing.  Buying old, used Transformers doesn't give support to the original creators either, but I still wouldn't want a knock-off, haha.

Ah, I can't believe I did that again. I don't know why I keep mixing those two up. xP

My version of the first OST is a bootleg and it has a full pamphlet with the liner notes and everything. It's not super hard to fake.

I never got to see it when it came out, for some reason.  I still haven't watched it!  I need to do that soon, but I've got such a backlog as it is...

Anyway, I went to the flea market where I got the legendary 20 dollar box of 80s Transformers years ago, and it was quite the bust this time. D: I suppose what with it being winter and a Saturday (the lady at the info booth on the phone said Sundays are the better days), it was probably an off day.  The only guy that had anything good was this old guy who had some DVDs and remote-controlled cars.  I figured the rest of the place might have as good stuff as he did, but it was all crap, and by the time I got back to where he was, he had already left!  I thought he had said he was leaving soon just to get me to buy the DVDs, but he meant it!

Ah well, I've spent my Christmas/Birthday/odd job money on other things (that I originally wanted) now, and I figure I'll check out the flea market later on when it gets warmer.  Hopefully there'll be better pickings, then.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Still, the CD mystery remains unsolved.  Whenever I finally feel like messing with it,  I'll try to get more, better pictures of the CD.  Still, even if it is a bootleg, it was only a dollar.  I mean, I just don't get why someone with legit DVDs would have a bootleg CD though.  And really, what market is there for it?  They'd be better off bootlegging famous pop stars, not something like anime sound tracks.  Even if it's a popular anime, it's a pretty small group of people that want the soundtracks that badly to actually go out and buy them.  So you've got niche on top of niche right there that you're supposedly capitalizing on.  I don't get it!  My CD just has to be the real McCoy, goshdarnit!
