I went to the Florida Anime Experience in Kissimmee today and got there right on time for Mr Blum's Q&A.
There were NOT a lot of people there - it's Friday when most people are working, and it's a small con anyway. I was sitting in the third row, maybe 10 feet from him. There was a woman sitting in front of me and to the right who was cosplaying Faye. Good costume! She had the figure for it too and she looked adorable.
Some observations:
Photographs do not do him justice. He's adorable.
He's a sweet, very charming, funny guy.
He has a tattoo on the inside of one arm of the wave form of Spike's "Bang." He said if there was a way to play it, that's what you'd hear.
He came prepared with a sheet of paper with lines on it from different characters he's done, which is good because various people asked if he could do this voice or another. He did them all and was hilarious doing it.
He said he hadn't seen Cowboy Bebop until about a year ago and that he doesn't really have time to watch much TV.
I got a question in - how long does it take for them to record the voices for an animated series, say of 26 episodes. He said they can often times get in 4 to 5 episodes in a recording session and that anime voice over dubs go quickly ('cause the animation's already done). Western animation takes a bit longer (but not necessarily for the actors). They can finish their lines in several hours to a couple of days, but then it can be two years or more for the animation to be done. He has projects he voiced almost 2 years ago that he still can't talk about because they're still working on it.
Someone asked him about whether he'd want to get involved with a second season of Cowboy Bebop and he said "oh I WISH!" But then he said that Watanabe san had decided that the show was good as is and doesn't want to continue it, but he didn't say it was impossible but just would probably never happen (even though I think it probably is).
Someone asked about the live action Cowboy Bebop movie (last question of the hour), and he said he actually met Keanu Reeves, introduced himself and said he voiced Spike. He and Keanu had a nice talk and he said Keanu is really passionate about Cowboy Bebop and really wants to do it, but at the rate things are going, he may be too old or too weak to do his own stunts.
That's when I got a in comment saying a number of people think that if the movie does get made that he and the other voice actors should have cameos. He said he would lust after the opportunity, even just to do a voice over narration. That's when I said "You have to!" so he laughed and pointed to me and to the guy with the video camera he said "you have a record, I have to do it, she said so." It was fun.
I'm going to try to go on Sunday. He'll be there all three days doing Q&As and autograph signing. I couldn't stay for the autograph session. Maybe Sunday.
In short, the man is a total cutie. I know some folks who have crushes on him *koff*RainIsa*koff* - I have to tell ya, he's a good one to have a crush on. Good choice.
To clarify: I'm a chick, ok? And I'm a hugger. And I call people "honey." That's just how I talk (really). I live in the South (if you consider Florida to still be the "South") and it's what comes out of my mouth and hands on the keyboard."MATSUDA!!"
