Happenstance is the word I'm going with.
Yeah. Obviously, they both found themselves at the same place at the same time. Jet was lonely and Spike needed someone too.
I got the lonely thing from something Spike said as he was leaving the Bebop in Jupiter Jazz I. Spike told Jet he wouldn't be so lonely with the other people on board ship (Ed and presumably Faye if Jet found her). Jet said he thought Spike was the lonely one.
However they met, I think they both were lonely. Jet could use the company and a partner, Spike needed a friend and something to do. It was a perfect situation for him, not staying in the same place, always on the move - a good way to keep out of the syndicate's radar.
The only thing the anime guides really say about those two is that Jet is the only person that the "lone wolf" Spike trusts. I'm sure there is a reason for that beyond gut instinct. Exactly what that reason would be we can only speculate.
To clarify: I'm a chick, ok? And I'm a hugger. And I call people "honey." That's just how I talk (really). I live in the South (if you consider Florida to still be the "South") and it's what comes out of my mouth and hands on the keyboard."MATSUDA!!"
