Boy, am I a thread killer or what?

Evidently no one else thinks that Jet is an awesome (ok, creative) cook to come up with that many dishes for mushrooms.

I know he's got more spunk in him than I do. I'd more than likely react the way Spike and Faye did. :smileytongue:

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I've reacted to my mother's cooking that way before. Then again, I can see Jet saying what she'd say to us, "If you don't like it, you cook!"

That reminds me of that time that Spike gripes at Jet for there being no beef with the bell peppers and without missing a beat Jet's quick to point out that Jet had to pay to fix all the damage Spike caused so really it was Spike's own fault! :smileyvery-happy:

Scooby-san, forgive my laziness for not scouring the entire thread, but have we ever discussed Jet's dream about Charlie Parker?

Lol, thought you'd never ask, but in truth I've got more questions than answers...

Warning: almost certainly inappropriate usage of parentheses ahead

I thought it was interesting that Jet was gambling to begin with. Did he decide to play the slots because of the dream or was he using the dream to rationalize what he already intended to do? Gambling just seems so uncharacteristic for Jet.

Does Charlie Parker have any significance other than the fact that he was a legendary bebop musician? I'm thinking of his nickname "Bird" and Spike's (well I suppose you could call it a) nickname "Swimming Bird."

And where does Goethe come in? I'm having trouble researching that quote ("only hands can wash hands; if you want to recieve you must first give" ) online in connection with Goethe (to be fair, we've got translation issues) but I did read on an anime review site that Goethe didn't write that and it's actually a re-phrasing of the common latin quote "manus manum lavat" (basically, one hand washes the other).

So what do you guys think, eh?

I think Jet went to gamble because of the dream and they used Charlier Parker instead of someone else specifically because he was  Bird.

The Goethe comment Spike makes is problematic to say the least. I'm not entirely sure how it applies to the "hand" phrase at this time.

Had to look all the way back to page 183...

*bump*

Saw an interesting Nova on the melting glaciers of Kilimanjaro. Now, we all know that Jet mistells Hemingway's "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," but even his version relies on the aging volcano being the stairway to heaven. Looking down on the snow is like looking down at a cloud - the whiteness softens the harsher volcanic features and the reflected light blurs the horizon. Harry's passage into the afterlife is one of the most profound moments in modern literature, profound enough to have the spirit of the moment reinterpreted. But would that moment happen if the cone was just barren rock?

Bebop and Jet was the first thing I thought of when I saw this.

That's funny - I was just thinking about Kilimanjaro the other day.  No, I don't think the moment would happen if the cone was just barren rock.  Perhaps it's the contrast of the snow and the desert or the fact that it's the largest mountain on earth not connected with a mountain range which gives it a rather other-worldly appearance.

I think those both really give the mountain it's power. The contrast between tundra and desert is actually a very finite one, seeing as both environments are featureless and at the extreme ends of hospitable: the only real difference, besides the temperature, is that one represents the end of a life cycle while the other represents the start of the life cycle.

Well, tonight's episode is a good opportunity to bring up Jet's best trait - his ability to make a story his own. He portrays Hemingway's "Snows of Kilimanjaro" in a way that challenges the protagonist.

Oh yeah.  They answered that question in Black Dog Serenade.  Poor Jet.

To clarify: I'm a chick, ok? And I'm a hugger. And I call people "honey." That's just how I talk (really). I live in the South (if you consider Florida to still be the "South") and it's what comes out of my mouth and hands on the keyboard.

There's something melancholic about responding to an C_e post.  I guess I can always read through this thread and she'll be with us again.

...

Jet is an enigmatic character.  He's Spike's Nick Carraway in a fashion; even though the story doesn't have a narrator, Jet is still the focal point of the narrative since he ultimately is the one who validates their presences in the collective.  In that respect, his backstory is supposed to be intertwined with theirs and that makes it hard to give him anything but the most basic of explanations for his appearance.
