Vicious and Spike knew each other since they were kids - it's in Anime Guide #1 that Mao took them in and raised them in the syndicate.
Also, Spike didn't fight in the war on Titan. That war took place after Spike left the syndicate and there is no indication that Spike was ever there. Where did you get the information that Spike was on Titan or that is where he met Vicious?

This I didn't know. Of course I don't read stuff like that, and just go by what's in the show.. but with just that one can tell the two have a history...
I know, that's ok, I think 99.9% of Cowboy Bebop fans are the same way. xD I have a bone in my head that makes me buy and read everything related to the shows I'm obsessed with. I have the anime guides both in the English that Tokyopop put out and the original Japanese. Pretty sick. They really say little to nothing about Spike and Vicious growing up - that was all. Everything else is up to our imaginations (which I think is the coolest part).
Just from the flashbacks, one can tell that Spike and Vicious were at one time on good terms but had a falling out. Was that ONLY about Julia or did other things happen as well? They don't say, and I'm inclined to think there were other things going on that may not have had anything to do with Julia. Not that it matters, it's my own way of trying to explain a few things.
Vicious IS a memorable character, and a cool one, that's for sure.

Yeah, the Titan war didn't involve Spike in any way in terms of the backstory, and I think you can count back Gren's time in prison, not sure of the number but it's mentioned in Jupiter Jazz 1, how long ago the war was from the current story. I'm gonna go out of a limb with a guess of something like 10 years so it kinda puts it ahead of the three year window of Spike's exit from the syndicate and the present day timeline.
