So, yeah, I've had this idea in my mind for a little while, and I've decided I might as well
write it, since it is kind of blocking my ability to write anything else.It is fantasy, but not
necessarily swords and sorcery. Think more like Moribito, and you'll be in the right ball park.
The world known to the nations of man consists of three great lands,
separated by the Worldspine mountains, which line the Great Sacred Lake
Tatanshu. It is a world that has climbed slowly from lawless marauding tribes,
a world where science is slowly blending with magic, though the
spirits still speak to those willing to listen, and can, if properly called,
act in the world. Among the great nations there are those who are spirit bonded,
raised from childhood in concert with a spirit, Earth and Fire to fight, Air to
see and learn, and Water to heal and nourish. There are rumors of those who
are bonded to darker spirits, raised by cults for unknowable ends. Legends of
the people are full of heroes and villains, though the great nations now know
relative peace, towns and even small cities are rampant with rumors of a great horde
that is pillaging, and prophets speak of a dying sun.
Osteric, the land of the East, renown for living in harmony with plains
and rolling gentle hills, their cities are few and far between. They live simple
lives, with their herds of cattle and sheep, trading eagerly with the other nations
for tools and weapons, offering the best in horses and leather works. Marked
by their sun tanned faces and dark hair, they are most likely to listen to the spirits.
Khardis is the nation of the North, a rough land with dense pine forests, nargles, the
fierce legendary wolves twice the size of men, and a breed of people hardy enough to endure it.
Khardans are tough, raised from birth to live in a land that will kill with little qualm.
Despite this, Khardans rarely draw their swords, preferring to settle disputes with less
deadly tests of skill and strength. Though in the past others have made the mistake
of thinking them weak for this, those with real knowledge know that there are few
more foolish than those who challenge a Khardan to a duel. The Kardans build squat
cities, with thick walls to keep the nargles at bay. Here they pursue science and
sorcery equally, producing the best in weapons and armor.
Celteria is the nation of the West, a land of gentle hills, abundant farmland,
forests and rivers. The people are a strange mix, equally embracing science
and sorcery, but keeping them distinct. Hamlets will be either or, but only
in the largest of cities will you find the great Collegiums, the gathering places
of Air-bound and scientists. Renown for their bards and entertainers, their knowledge
of history is unmatched. Legends hold that once the whole world was under one kingdom,
a Celterian named Ronaldus, who ruled with justice until a great tragedy befell the world.
Most of the people of the other nations are quick to point out that there are no better
boasters than Celterians when this legend is mentioned.
General notes for people when submitting characters.
Bound individuals tend to reflect their spirits, for example, fire bound tend to be emotional,
prone to outbursts and prefer being warm. Earth bound tend to be somewhat slow, and stocky in
physical build. Air bound tend to be subject to getting lost in thought, and often stare off
at what seems to be nothing. Water bound tend to be calm, collected and kind.
When it comes to other spirits, being bound doesn't really work well. The other spirits
tend to be so alien to the human mind and body that anyone bound to them would end up
warped in body or mind, gibbering mindlessly or worse.
There are people who can speak to spirits but aren't bound to any. They are more akin
to shamans, druids, or medicine men than they are wizards that toss lightning bolts around.
It is possible to be bound and to speak with spirits, but the two are not mutually inclusive.
There are many more people who end up bound and can't speak to spirits, they simply reflect the
spirit they are bound to, nothing more. Actually summoning a spirit and getting it to manifest
itself is an extremely rare, difficult and draining process for both the spirit and the summoner.
Most of the time it is something much less dramatic, though sometimes angry spirits can move mountains.

The real American idea is not that every man shall be equal, but that every man shall have the liberty without hindrance to be what God has made him. The office of government is not to confer happiness but to give men the opportunity to work out happiness for themselves.
