What's the verdict on this show's censorship?

[ Edited ]
I've read a bunch of stuff from a bunch of people saying different things about how censored this show is.

Apparently there's a totally uncensored version, and a version that was censored for Japanese TV by darkening the goriest scenes. That's what I've read from you folks anyway.

Aside from the handful of bleeps, there are some folks who have said that this show is about the same as the version that aired on Japanese TV, and other folks have said that there's a ton of censorship.

What's the truth? How censored is this show? I'm curious, because it's obvious that this show goes beyond any show anime Adult Swim has aired before in terms of blood and violence.

I haven't seen the show prior to this, but it seems like there's a bit they are letting Toonami get away with in terms of gore. This might be because other shows on the network, i.e. Metalocalypse, have so much of it already. If this show were edited in any significant way, you would be seeing a lot of people complaining about it. A lot more than are now. There is a certain limit to how much is allowed, but so far it's safe to say it hasn't been reached, yet.
Anime I'm watching: Oreimo S2

Plan to watch: Blue Submarine No. 6

I've seen a handful of people complaining about it, but those are probably the same people who don't understand why Adult Swim can't air Elfen Lied.

It was always my impression that S&P viewed comedy-violence and action-violence differently. Perhaps they've finally lightened up a little on action-violence. Obviously they're not going to show a fully detailed severed head. But if this show is a sign of things to come, I support it.

I have no idea....I think the hour in which it's aired should
allow for some slack in terms of violence and language....but
as far as I casn tell hardcore anime fans always complain
about how censored the shows are by the time they air on [AS].

In general it does allow for that. AS will probably never air stuff completely uncensored because it shares space with a kids' network, but standards are much more lax than they used to be when AS first started. This is easily the bloodiest show that's ever aired for AS Action, censorship or not.

You're right about the hardcore anime fans.

I'm not sure, but all I know is that it's definitely nice to see Toonami take a more mature path with this show. Not to mention I'm really looking forward to catching it.

I'm quite curious of this as well.... I don't know if its just me or what, but I get annoyed of hearing the bleep every couple of lines. Especially when it last 5-10 seconds, that gets old fast.... The blood and gore part I don't really see them having a problem with, looking at all the other shows they air. The only thing i see persistant across the board is the bleeping of words. I mean, how can a few cuss words be worse than seeing someone's head cut off or their insides pulled out of them?

Sorry, kinda random, but I really have a issue with the censors.... Its annoying and gets in the way... lol

I am watching the show right now, and I see that yes, the violence is big, but the bleeping is mandatory. It's not the fact that they share a channel with a children's network, its because of FCC regulations. Based on this channels accessability, time of air, and content, AS has mandatory rules they MUST follow, or risk getting a government fine. People will complain and gripe, but I would not want to have to go through the layers of griping in the office. These censorship regulations vary from channel to channel, as you notice harder to access channels have less regulations, but are still regulated.

Darling, I see that you are reading this, so what does that mean? Oh.... well then goodnight my love... I guess that our words end here....

They may mean that the manga has more gore. Highschool of the Dead did the same thing. The anime shows some stuff, but the manga went into a lot more "detail".

From what I have heard from other people the show isn't really edited other than the bleeps. I haven't seen this show yet, so I am blissfully in the dark.

How do you figure it goes beyond any show Adult Swim has aired in terms of blood and violence?  Haven't you ever seen Metalocalypse or Superjail?  Sure, Superjail is goofy enough with its art style, even as violent as it is, but Metalocalypse shows its gore in pretty realistic and detailed fashion.

I heard there were some blurs in the first episode, but I didn't notice it.

I haven't noticed any of the blood censored up to what I've seen of the series originally but the I think there is a lot more swearing in the dub than in the sub, which I think really adds an extra boost to the show for me, lol

I'm not sure if an uncensored version exists because the Japanese broadcast darkened the gore and made all the people on Myanimelist I compare to the audience of the Dograce angry that they couldn't see the death. I know there's an uncensored Highschool of the Dead, but that's a different show

if DVDs are out chances that might be uncencored? i know funi said they'll be releasing deadman wonderland uncencored on dvd.

also i belive that the cencorship on toonami is less uncencored and more uncencored in some areas. its less uncencored with the violence (for example in ep.2 when the guy got cut in half during the obstacle they showed that on toonami but cencored it in the sub) but more cencored with the language. (like in the sub that MMA guy said "Im going to rape and kill you BEEP." where as in toonami it was "BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP you." )

I think it's funny when stuff gets bleeped out. I don't need to hear the actual words to know what they're saying, anyway.

No, it's not because of the FCC. Cable networks are not beholden to FCC content standards. Only over-the-air networks are.

The censorship is for the advertisers and PR, and yes, it has to do with the fact that it shares a channel with CN.

It was my understanding that the uncensored version was on the Blu Ray release in Japan, but I could be mistaken.

Thanks for the info on what was beneath that long bleep. And yes, that sounds like it was justifiably censored.

Just as a side comment, I'm not bothered by the censorship. I'm just curious about what kinds of things are acceptable. If you want anime on American TV suitable for adults, you pretty much have to deal with a certain degree of censorship.

As others are saying it is the language censoring that people are complaining about.

Whoever did it made it way too loud and in no way tried to make it subtle like all programs do nowadays to where you barely notice it.

I watched ahead in the subs and it seems that if [as] airs the episodes, you'll see 5 minutes of beeps at times.

Yeah, the constant bleeping of swearings bother me. I don't understand how bad words are suddenly worse than 29 heads cut off, lots of bloody deaths, and a society that accepts... no welcomes that.

they don't bleep out some curse words, like a$$ or sh!t. but they do usually bleep out the f-bomb, which is fine by me. they say it a lot in the uncensored version anyways :smileytongue:.

they make up for the bleeping with all the innuendo :smileywink:.

as far as the gore is concerned, its not that over the top. if you remember, blood+ had just as much blood, though so far, every episode of deadman wonderland has been rated TV MA, while blood+ got many TV-14 ratings. its not the first time [as] has played a very bloody anime.

so far, the show's been fairly interesting. i'm sticking with it.

I agree with this, it's rather obvious that the dialogue is meant to be un-bleeped (as opposed to something like Metalocaplyse where censors are accomodated), so with the bleeps it can kinda get in the way. Bugs me knowing how [as] should be able to get away with a lot of it, too. It's still one major drawback of being a part of CN.
