Audio question - DVD

Anyone here have the show on DVD?

I have a question about something I'm hearing on the audio, usually coming from the right speaker.  It's a weird, protracted.... 'fart' sound.  I hear it frequently on all the DVDs and Death Note is the only set that has this sound.  I've heard this from 2 different DVD players on 2 different sound systems.

It's definitely on the Japanese soundtrack, is it on the dub as well?  Is that supposed to be there or is there something up with my DVDs?  Does anyone remember hearing a sound like that when this played on Adult Swim?

To clarify: I'm a chick, ok? And I'm a hugger. And I call people "honey." That's just how I talk (really). I live in the South (if you consider Florida to still be the "South") and it's what comes out of my mouth and hands on the keyboard.

Hmmm...  *loads up a DVD*

Really?  I'm not hearing anything, and I've never heard anything on mine in the past.  I've eventually began pressing my ear to the speaker to try and pick up a fart sound but at that short distance you can't really pick out much.  How noticeable is it?  Should I be able to hear it plain as day?  And it's on every episode of every DVD? You sure it's not your system?  Have you tried it on your computer or an entirely different TV?  I'd say it was your DVD but the odds of ALL of them being bad... they're pretty high.

THANK you for trying.

It's plain as day.  Can't miss it, and you wouldn't have to press your ear to the speaker to hear it.  The sound lasts for at least a half a minute, if not more, and it's fairly frequent.  It's mostly when Ryuk is on screen, but not always.  It's tone rises and falls, so it's not a flat, continuous tone.  I've heard it on the first four DVDs (which is what I've watched so far) on two different tvs/players/sound systems. It's definitely the DVDs.  I haven't tried it on my computer yet.

What I'm going to have to do is, if it shows up on my computer, capture the audio and upload it.  I don't know if "fart" is really the best way to describe the sound.  I figured it was an audio effect that sets mood, but it's not that consistent.

I don't remember hearing it on the first two DVDs that I rented from Netflix, and I don't remember hearing it when watching the rest of it online.  I wonder if my DVDs are just having problems.

Maybe I should find a scene on the DVD that has that sound, then find it online and see if it's there too.

I don't hear anything like that on mine.  And I've loaded up different discs now into both my computer and my Xbox 360.

Do you have later volumes?  Try them.  If it happens on every single one, I just can't imagine every disc was bad with the same problem.  It's got to be your hookup.  Are any cables loose?  I've had that happen.  Try other DVDs (movies, etc.).  Where did you get them from?  Not that it probably matters but I don't know what else to tell you.

I got them off amazon.com,  bought them new.  I keep replaying the episodes in volume 1, so haven't tried volume 2 yet.  Yeah, I'm having a hard time believing that myself. :\

In the living room I'm playing it in a PS3 through a home theater system. The office is an older LJ blu ray player just using the tv speakers.  Gonna try one in my computer sometime today.

If I can hear it on the computer, I'll capture the audio, upload and send a link.

Of course, I tend to play things LOUD, maybe it's not that noticeable unless you crank it?

Well, that's where I got mine.  I'd try a different volume just to check and see if that one does it.

I usually have my TV volume set loudly, too.  Not maxed out or anything but 60 or 70 out of 100 for sure.  So, not sure if that would be it.

You know, I just played through volume 1 again and only heard that sound in a couple of places (three at most), far fewer times than previous viewings.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the DVDs themselves, and I haven't tried it on my computer yet (that's next), but it's something about those DVDs on those two blu ray players.

I'll be starting volume 2 either this afternoon or tomorrow and will have to listen if that sound shows up there too.

Sounds like the player is having a hard time playing the disc.

What's interesting is, I checked out the streams of the two Re-Light specials, and they both had that sound too.   I've since ordered the DVDs and am fixing to play at least one of them tonight.  It will be interesting if I hear it on these as well.

Just thought I'd follow up with that little tidbit.  :smileyvery-happy:

It can't be your discs.  The odds that every single disc, even the Relights, is corrupted is astronomical.  It's gotta be your player.  I know that one episode on one of the discs has problems for me when in my Xbox 360, but plays fine in a standard DVD player.  I still suggest you switch to a different player, maybe even upgrade to a Blu-ray player.

These are blu ray players.  The main one in the living room is a PS3, the one in the office is an LG.  Both of them do the same thing.  I still have to try them in the computer (I need to, want to get some screen caps).

Going to try them in the puter tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if it does the same thing there.  Oh, and it's volume 1 and 2 that does it.

I'm having a hard time believing it's my players, because none of the other DVDs or blu rays make that sound.  It's too late to really start playing around with them in the computer now.  I took some caps from one scene in Re-Light 1 and didn't hear it.

It's weird. I haven't checked the dub soundtrack to see if it shows up there, so I don't know. I'm thinking I should capture an audio clip and let you listen.  I wonder if it's just the Japanese soundtrack that's messed - haven't heard enough of the dub to tell.

Try a regular DVD player.

Well, mystery solved.

I was listening to Death Note II in the car this afternoon and it got to track 27 - that sound is actually part of the soundtrack.  The music it's with is more ambient than anything else (no real discernable tune), but this sound was part of it.

Nothing wrong with the players or with the DVDs, that's supposed to be there.

It's just a weird sound that fades in and out, rising and lowering in pitch.  You only hear it when certain music is playing (the music is more like background noise than a real tune).

You can hear it a lot especially towards the beginning when Light is alone with Ryuk in his room.
