He also has red hair which he never has in the series. It's just an artistic choice they made for the OP.

This.

Other characters had colors assigned to them in the same artistic style.  I know Aizawa had green and I think Near had light blue.

Yeah, they kept showing him with red eyes.  Red was Light's color.  Blue was Ryuzaki/L's color. Yellow was Matsuda, green was used for Aizawa.   Other characters had their own colors.  When they showed us what these characters were thinking, we saw them highlighed with their color.  Watch episode 19, "Matsuda" and look at what they did with his coloring when he was thinking.  It was a stylistic choice (which I LOVE)  by the director.

It does look like it implies he has the shinigami eyes, but seeing as how he's so influenced by a shinigami's property, that's really appropriate.

Interestingly, in the manga, Light's assigned color was white.  Ohba and Obata have said that this is because Light lacked a color.  Or something similar.  I forget the exact wording, but it revolved around him not having a true color like all the other characters.

I saw that, yeah.

My comments were based on the highlighting they used in the anime for when Light was thinking - you know, his internal monolog color.  Light's was red, L blue, etc.

I know they said that L's color was gold.  Not in the anime.  I could be wrong but I'm guessing there were color illustrations, maybe beyond just the covers of the books where the colors were used.
