I thought this was funny (SOPA/PIPA)

A friend sent me a link to this picture and I flipped.  Thought you guys would enjoy it if you haven't seen it already:  https://images.nonexiste.net/popular/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/S

Well, I thought it was funny. :manlol:

To clarify: I'm a chick, ok? And I'm a hugger. And I call people "honey." That's just how I talk (really). I live in the South (if you consider Florida to still be the "South") and it's what comes out of my mouth and hands on the keyboard.

Heh heh.  Good one.

Don't even know what to think about the whole issue though. SOPA/PIPA get's stopped and the Feds just kill MegaUpload (and inadvertently, FileSonic, FileServe, etc.) anyway.

...Sigh...makes you wish you had a Death Note so you could just "clean house" as far as the govt. is concerned.

There ARE copyright protection laws (Digital Millennium Copyright Act - DMCA, and others).  SOPA and PIPA are just huge entertainment conglomerates trying to control any form of content distribution - ie, the internet.  I don't know about Megaupload.  I'm sure they had some copyright violations on the site, but they had legitimate files there also.  Now they're all gone.  I mean, the news doesn't tell us if Megaupload was contacted about the violations and told to remove them and they refused.  Or did the feds just see the stuff on there (or think it was on there) and go after them to shut them down?  This is the sort of activity that SOPA would definitely enable.  Megaupload (or at least what they hosted) will be back though.

Other file sharing sites are scared spitless now, thinking they're going to be raided too because of stuff someone may have uploaded.  That's what these bills would have done. They haven't even passed and yet the things they would have done are happening.

I believe in protecting intellectual property, but there are already laws protecting it.  These two bills were just a power grab, pure and simple.  I love the image of Light taking names. xD

What's even funnier is seeing bigwigs in Hollywood screaming in public that they gave politicians all this money and now they're not doing what they told them to do.  That's bribery and it's a crime. I'm interested in seeing if anyone gets prosecuted for it.  I'm betting they don't.

The bills will not pass. They've both been redacted in their "current" forms. However, it is semi-disheartening that some of the effects of them ended up happening anyway.

On a lighter note, this pic is hilarious!  On that note, I wonder why we can't find a good image of Gandalf yelling at SOPA and PIPA "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!"...

This Saturday Night, on [adult swim]: TOONAMI'S BACK, BlTCHES!! A New Bleach Episode (255) kicks us off at Midnight, followed by the SERIES PREMIERES of Deadman Wonderland at 12:30 and Casshern Sins at 1! Then, we've got 3 back-to-back classics: FMA:B Episode 32 "Fuhrer's Son" at 1:30, followed by GITS: 2nd Gig at 2 and Cowboy Bebop at 2:30! Bummed out that Durarara!!'s gone, and still wanna finish it? Episodes 22-25 are streaming in [as] Video until Thursday!

Elsewhere: New season of ThunderCats continues Saturday at 9:30 AM on CN! Avatar: The Legend of Korra continues Saturdays at 11 AM on Nickelodeon!

There is a new piece of legislation in the works that looks like an attempt to fix the problems that SOPA and PIPA had called the OPEN Act: http://keepthewebopen.com/ - it's up for comments.

We also need to be on the lookout for ACTA: https://www.eff.org/issues/acta

It's not that hard to protect intellectual property rights, even across borders.  If there are any loopholes, fix them.  No need to go all draconian on everyone. :smileytongue:

I know about all those.  But those laws haven't really done too much.

Of course MegaUpload had copyright problems.  I guess around 70% of what they hosted was pirated or infringed on copyrights.  The Feds didn't tell creator anything.  They just raided his place in New Zealand with an armed SWAT team, arrested him, and confiscated everything he owned.  And all because one small facet of his business had some slight basis in Virginia.  So they claimed he was doing it on U.S. soil.  And because of this, the other two big sites that also hosted files, FileServe and FileSonic have taken everything down and switched their whole format to a losing business model (their sites almost do nothing now) just to avoid their own SWAT assault.  It sucks.  I used those sites.  It'll take the Internet at least a few weeks to undo the damage.

Yeah, I like the idea of killing all these people too.  Where's a good corporate Kira like Higuchi when you need one?

Or the govt. could just stay out of it entirely.  I really don't care about protecting IPs.  How else am I going to steal stuff I want?  Not that I download movies or anything.  I don't consider Hollywood good enough to steal from.  And they should take that as an insult.

And if anyone thinks it's going to make a difference, they're wrong.  I consider internet piracy to be like the Hydra from Greek legends.  Cut off a head and two more grow to takes it's place.  Shut down sites, more will just spring up.  Or you have groups like Anonymous fighting back by taking down govt. websites.  I think if they were serious, they'd do more than mess with govt. websites, but...  Anyways, and it is sort of hard to protect across borders because not every country (i.e. most) care enough about it like the United States of Hollywood do to actually do anything.

I'm with you wrt Hollywood.  I watch what I watch legally, if I watch it at all.  I have watched a few things streaming from MegaUpload (or downloaded it then deleted to free up disc space), but I know they did have legitimate content on there.  And it's criminal that they went in and took the whole thing down without giving them the opportunity to correct the situation.  i don't like those moves at all.  What happened to 'due process'?  Out the window apparently, to show that they're serious about all that money they're getting from Hollywood I guess.

And yes, the internet IS a hydra, you're right.  Those sites will be back.  Nothing ever really disappears from the internet (heck, stuff I posted 25 years ago on usenet is still available).  Anonymous worries me because I don't know what the government (that is, the US government or even others) will do to fight back.  I just fear that they will crack down to North Korea levels to punish them/protect against them.  Ok, slight exaggeration, but you know...

I don't think Anonymous does enough.  "Oh, no!  They took down the Department of Justice website!  Ooooh, scary!"  They need to step it up and start doing real cyber-terrorism.  Maybe there's some way I can manipulate them into doing it without them realizing they're being used...Hmm...

Man, if you could also manipulate a bunch of politicians to STFU, that would be golden.  :smileyvery-happy:

I may be good, but I can't work miracles.  Or at least, I wouldn't be able to shut them up without shutting them up...on a more permanent basis (if you know what I mean).

Well, I thought it was funny. :manlol:

I lol'ed.

In the DN universe I could see Kira (and Kira supporters) becoming something akin to Anonymous, though.  Only with less Internet posturing and more being a legitimately frightening force.

Probably not, but the name is unbelievable! I had to share that on facebook - I have friends who are Death Note fans and they got a kick out of it too.

The picture would have been cooler if the kid didn't look like a complete wimp.

And I'm sure the news people weren't there to give KFC an award.

L Lawliet was made up, hard to believe that there is an actual L Lawliet actually walking around who was born with that name. I have to wonder if he had his name changed to that.  I'm betting he did.

Or more likely, he was some kid interviewed about some problem with KFC, and when asked his name, he lied and said "L Lawliet".  News vans, on a quick on-the-spot live interview don't tend to fact-check much in the way of people's backgrounds.  They most likely assumed he was giving his first name as an initial.

This kid doesn't even look eighteen.  And even if he was, I'm pretty sure Mommy and Daddy would be mad, so he wouldn't dare legally change it.  The kid's got no spine to defy his parents.  He works at a fast food restaurant, after all.
