Who Actually Thought That Contest Was Fun?

I didn't.  It seemed much more like homework than anything else.

Several of the clues were unsolvable because they were never hinted at existing: the NEKO letters which we had no way of ever realizing their importance, the Venus sign which we must have been expected to pull out of our @sses, that Kira had the letter I in their name, and how Octo was supposed to avoid confusion rather than creating it.

The orange I get.  The two, 3, the zeroes, those I mostly get (though I thought to disregard the nones, even though I did consider them).  Some of the pattern following those numbers made sense, some didn't.  Mostly the three and that stupid Octo.

And the clue involving the number of people who died tying in with Cid's profile page.  I completely understand that.  That was well done.  But, Lover said that the clues related to uncovering Kira using profiles while the news reports were supposed to hint at Kira's movements around [as].  He must've lied there.

The second Kira was never fully explained, nor fleshed out.  This idea should have been dropped before it even was born (which was apparently after the contest had started).

And then there was Cid's answer, which although original and well done in and of itself, didn't really connect to many of the clues that Lover had.  He got the icon one.  Sort of.  His basis was that Kira must have a lot of icons saved.  The icon was supposed to relate to the color orange.  He got the shape one completely wrong.  He mistook a hexagon for a pentagon and tried to say that it meant that Kira had 5 letters in their name, which although true, nobody could have gotten that based on the clue.  Then he thought the third clue meant that Kira was Loverdemon, which couldn't be since he was running the contest and therefore could not be an entrant.

I don't want to put Lover down for this.  It was a good first attempt and probably took a fair amount of time to come up with.  But I don't think he looked at it from an objective point of view.  As the creator, he could only look at it from the designer's perspective, which means he could always clearly see the hidden meanings in the clues.  The difficulty in creating something like this is not making clues.  That's the easy part.  The hard part is working backwards to make sure that all of the clues fit together and can be figured out from scratch.

A couple of us thought the contest would be better if it was more...interactive.  People working together (or alone) to take down a Kira that is not only visible, but is actually "committing crimes" within the board(s).  And Kira could actually "kill" contestants if they're not careful.  I know that that brings up it's own set of difficulties, but it would have felt more like a fun activity to be a part of instead of this which as I said felt like you're just doing research and homework to catch a Kira that technically doesn't exist.

I just had to say this since Lover closed the thread before I could post.  I'm done venting now.  Rip me apart for criticizing it if you want.  But without me criticizing everyone else in this board and stirring up trouble, it'd get real quiet around here.

Yeah, it was set up to be like that. But if you through the series it was a lot like that, it wasn't something that you could easily solve, like in the series, I really wanted to make it like the series all the while trying to maintain the whole entire feel as if you really where playing the part of L or even Near.

They were unsolvable up to that point, in fact there were a few other clues that I never got to post that were going to tie. For the Neko clue, I said to look at the letters. In every sentence, that is if you want to have everything setup correctly you focus on the punctuation and well as capitalization, I was going to put another clue that would reveal that where the letters were, I even had an idea of using mistakes to my advatange to hid there name. The Venus sign was probably harder than I was hoping it to be, but I thought the mention of a symbol might help a little since a lot of you were questioning the sex of KIra.

And yes the pattern with the three and octo were kinda misplaced, and not really where I wanted to place them, but, the thing that I did want is for people to notice the Octo, it would make you think one thing that was actually another, this was suppose to tie to the fake Kira, which it fit perfectly, or at least they way I wanted it to fit.

Well actually the clues were to fit to the profiles, the news reports were used to track Kira's patterns as well as hints to who they were. Everything in there tied directly to the profiles in some way, I did mention that not to long into the contest.

The second Kira was brought in, but there was supposed to be more, the 'switch' that had been announced during one of the clues was supposed to tie to the fake Kira, which was the switch between Lupin and film_nut that took place, there was supposed to be more added to this one.

This was probably the hardest decision, I had actually made the mistake of having this contest focus entirely on them as the Kira that everyone was looking for, even if it has tied into film_nut not all of the the clues would fit with them. The icon clue they got, which pretty much could have tied to anyone who had an image gallery with an orange con. The shapes one was wrong that is true, I even corrected it, in the post that was following it. I didn't put much clarfication on how exact you had to be when tying the clues together, basically, it was set up so if you could at least tie even one clue to the real Kira then you'd get it, this was used as a sort of handicap because of the difficulty of this contest at all.

Yes, I will admit I often found it difficult to look on both signs of the coin, I was looking at the clues from my own point of view, which to me tied together in some ways but fell apart in others, which I was going to fix at a later time. Definitely have to work on that part for anything in the future.

This is where this issue would come in, the rules kinda prevent such a thing, if fact I probably would have to have a long talk about that with an admin in order to set something like that, the subjecting of killing something or someone even in the form of a game is kinda shakey and requires a lot of explaination to make sure it'll follow the rules of the TOS as much as possible. Trust me, I love the idea it would have helped make things easier and narrowed things down at little quicker, I could have even gone for more of a storyline kinda deal for it as well. I think I might run this idea again sometime in the future, I'll give the admin a talk about this and we'll go from there.

Yeah, sorry about the thread, it'd ended so I just locked it, I had done the same thing with the registry thread after it was completed.

But in the end, thanks for you input, I'll keep this in mind, first time running this kind of contest especially in this form, I've run dozens of others but never anything like this, so this is kinda a learning experience.

Nonetheless, we'll do a few more contests in the folder and try this again at another time. Until then any further suggestions on anything, including contests are more than welcome.

Honestly, it was fun when I thought I examining the clues the way I thought were right.  Cid, you won, it's over, but it's like you just stumbled into the answer after half the board was eliminated.  I do think this game was a good starter and a better game can be created from it.

I don't think it had the Death Note feel to it.  L and Near didn't spend their entire time staring into a computer screen.  They actually went out and tried to catch Kira by laying traps and stuff for him.  They confronted Kira, something you couldn't do in this contest.

Well, I don't know how we were expected to see Octogon, and think "A 2nd Kira!"  That's a pretty big jump in logic, among others I pointed out.

I know there are some rules to get around, but if the contest couldn't be the more interactive thing that Lupin and I were talking about, it shouldn't be done again.  I know there are concerns about killing, but I don't think it's anything we couldn't get around.  The only problem is that we would need someone to be Kira.  And that would mean that they were a part of running the contest, therefore unable to claim a prize.  So you couldn't force someone to be Kira, they'd have to choose to be, knowing full well that they can't win the prize.

Why are locking threads anyway?  There's not enough traffic here to warrant that.  The whole of 5 people who are regulars would get the idea without you needing to lock it.

What other ideas are you thinking of for contests?  As we've learned contests like this one are very hit-and-miss.  I guess you could do story contests, drawing contests, etc.

I hate to say " I told you so", but I told you so.  This contest didn't really bring any new people into the board.  I recognize cid, film_nut, and others so they've been here before.  I think your goal, instead of bringing in new people, should just be to please those of us who are already here.

It's funny you mentioned that.  I thought that this could have been described as all of us fumbling around in a pitch dark room, and Cid just happened to be the one to stumble into the light switch.

And something that I do have planned for the second run, this time I based it all on clues and such, next time around they'll will be some actually seaching to be done.

You weren't expected at first, this idea was to keep things in the dark until further clues came in, that way you'd have to connect the newer clues to the previous ones that came out.

This was already noted, this will go along with the second run, as far as the whole killing deal, well I bring this to an admins attention and we'll go from there.

Usually whenever I have a contest that I run, I request for it to be locked (this was before I became helper) now I simply lock them so they don't get too chatty and there aren't any issues as far as moderation goes.

A drawing contest was one idea that I had, it's one of my personal favorite contests to run to be truthful, I've done a few of them now.

Hm, well I try to focus on both, since both sides are apart of my job, I have to bring new traffic in, while making things fun for the people already around the folder.

That's a problem.  Having clues where the way to figure it out isn't uncovered until way later.  The one-clue-a-day thing doesn't work then.  A block of clues being released at once would be better.  One group released at a certain date would only pertain to one aspect of the case.  Then you wait for it to be solved before moving on and disclosing the next group of clues which would solely pertain to a different aspect.  This way the contest wouldn't be wrecked by people's guesses.

Well, locking threads can also be hindersome as you saw.  I still don't think you need to here.

You know, not all HELPeRs follow their job description to the letter.  And the ones that do, well, maybe they aren't helping who they think they're helping.

So noted.

Not all, but I do. I do everything I really can, most would find that to be refreshing, but then again helpers never get much recognition as is. Or maybe they are and certain people don't think they are, but of course, everyone has there own opinions on things, especially when it comes to help.

Nonetheless, I'm going to do my job, simple as that.

But you failed in that aspect of your job.  You think your next attempt will be more successful?  Am I right in guessing that all the people who signed up for the contest but never returned were ones you asked to join?  So I guess you did that part of your job.  It's time to move on and focus on other aspects of your job.

But if you're gonna be stubborn, then I'll just have to do my job here on this board.  Which is to make your job much more difficult.  Well, that's not technically what the job is, but dealing with you falls into it.

There is no such thing as failure, just the experiences and your reactions to them. This wasn't a failure, and as far as the people who signed up, all of them came from the threads that were posted around the boards.

And yeah, I do think my next attempt will be better, I don't give up so easily, never have, never will. And I have been dealing with everything concerning my job, I'm working on the wiki for this board, running contests, working on getting us all new icons, as well as getting this board noticed.

Dealing with me? Hm, well your going to have to get used to me being around, because as long as this board is around, I'll be here, no matter how difficult the circumstances.

In fact, difficulty might work better for me, I always work better in high pressure situations.

HA!  Not that wiki again!  Bad_Witch tried that.  You can still see the smoldering remains of what it was.

Other HELPeRs have said the same thing, that they'd be around.  Where are they now?  How do you know you'll be here as long as the board?  You have bosses to report to and they might think differently some day.

And you'll have to get used to me dogging you at every turn.  You have a job to do, and so do I.  It's a similar job to be sure, but...working outside the system definitely has it's advantages.

probably.

also tsuntsun is from tsundere it means someone that has a hot-cold personality. the tsun part of tsundere refers to the "cold" personality usually that means they are stand-offish and rather cold nature and super serious all the time. but the dere part is the "hot" personality the more cuter blushy ones.

its like those anime characters that act like they dont like you but secretly do. >_>

Hm, yes I can and I have been using that. Of course, I have been adding to it myself as I go along.

Well simply because as long as this board is around I have a job and as time goes on and new shows appear I could get jobs with them as well. It all remains to be seen, but I look more towards the here and now, than in the future where it' unpredicatble.

Hm, well good luck with that one, looking forward to it.

Well, to clarify, I don't secretly like you.  We clear?  It's nothing personal.  I just don't like people in general. Though you winning the contest doesn't help.

And I don't want to be compared to anything cute or "blushy".

But a wiki thread is so hard to navigate.  Wikias are so much easier.  I understand why [as] wants wikis in their boards, but it still doesn't mean there's sound reasoning there.

If you don't look toward the future, then you are unprepared for it.

Oh, I don't need luck.  I'll succeed.  It's not a question of if.  Nor of when, I guess.

Well, this was actually the idea of the former admin around the board if you take a look around the SHOWS link above you'll see what the originally intent was going to be. But that was switched when helpers were made now we have to make the wiki's for the board it's.

True, but the future is made up from the present, you spend time wallowing about your future, you'll miss things in the present that could very well effect the future.

Mhm, I see. Well then, we'll see as time goes on.

Maybe instead of dogging LD at every turn, you could help him.

Cid won a custom rank, big whoop.
The game wasn't perfect, so what, LD did the best he could.
The point here should be to look at the contest, and improve it
so that it is better in the future, not to simply castigate someone for trying.
