Dragonball has a slightly better story and I like the comedic elements in it.

DBZ is THE action show and pretty much everyone's first anime who grew up in the 90s.
Basically it was DBZ, Sailor Moon, or Pokemon.
Dragonball Z has better fighting.

However, Dragonball has better scenes of Bulma in her underwear than DBZ.

They're both really good, but some of the best fights were in DBZ. I guess I prefer DBZ, but DB is still really good. DBGT, however, is horrible filler.

Dragon Ball was more about a boy going on adventures with his friends and fighting some bad guys along the way. Dragon Ball Z was all about power levels and fights that take half a season to finish. I like both, but I prefer Dragon Ball. I've never even seen GT so I don't have an opinion on that.

They're both one giant series as far as I and the manga are concerned anyway, but my favorite arc is the Buu arc, though primarily due to how well it mixes the humor of the early story with the action of the King Piccolo through Cell Games arcs...

DBZ since that's what was playing when I was a kid, and it's special in that sense.  Also, I saw DBZ before seeing Dragon Ball.  Although Dragon Ball is funnier

I loved both series, but Dragon Ball Z took it to a different extreme so Im going with DBZ, not to mention DBZ was what got me into anime.

As much as I liked DBZ as a child. I  think now I like DB better. DBZ I think went to crazy with it's power level antics. I liked the comedy in DB, but when they tried to go back to it in GT they failed. There was just way to much story built up around the characters at that point for those plot points to be inserted in and obstetrical that seemed childish.

I grew up reading the manga first, which revolved more around Dragonball.
Then I watched DBZ.
But I've always been a bigger fan of young Goku, so I will say Dragonball.

Both are good on their own rights, but Dragon Ball is better since it doesn't have ridiculous fillers that bore me to death (remember that filler Garlic Jr. saga? Ugh). Plus I thought Dragon Ball fighting required more technique than blasting ki's.
