I want to address this specifically for a few reasons.
Shizaya...canon?...non-canon?
It could be strongly debateable to be honest. Because of Erika. She has shown an extreme liking to Izaya and Shizuo getting together, and for that matter any two men getting together. In that sense, each couple that she "ships" could actually technically be canonical.
It's a huge loophole, obviously, I actually bring to mind the link posted by film_nut, detailing two different scenes.
Shizuo: I'm off to Shinjuku to murder Izaya.
Erika: Hey, hey! Shizu-chan's definitely in love with Izaya. Two guys... Like BL!
Celty, Togusa, Dotachin and Walker: No!
-------------------------------------------------------
Walker: (Erika giggling in the back of the van while watching the fight) What's with you?
Erika: Don't you see? Maybe Ikebukuro's number one couple is actually Shizu-chan and... (dissolves into giggles)
Dotachin: I really don't want to know.
Then a few minutes later...
Erika: Shizuo's the attacker! Wait a role reversal! He's receiving now! Seme! Uke! Seme! Uke!
Walker: Karisawa-san has completely fallen into Otome Road fantasies!
Now obviously, everyone already knows how much of a yaoi fangirl, our Erika is. It's made very obvious and grows stronger as the series continues.
In this way, it could very well be argued that Shizaya is canon because of that, while they might not be a flat out couple, and even for comedic relief, it is mentioned in the series, there is of course a strong argument there too.
Now the topic of Mikado/Masaomi, you said they were canon? Once again, an argument can be made that they aren't, there very playful and have a interesting bromance thing, but it's also similar in that to Izaya/Shizuo. Can Mikado/Masaomi be a canon couple? Possibly, but an argument can come up about 'shipping' in there.
Even if it was not canonical, how can it be disrespectful to the characters? This is happening in the series, so does that mean that the series itself is being disrespectful to the characters? Once again arguable.
Erika is one of the biggest things I think that has fueled all the yaoi fangirls in this series, it was definitely her who brought in a strong sense of the Izaya/Shizuo pairing and ships pretty much any male couple in the series. Canon or not, it is highly debateable.
As far as the. "####tly"? Are you serious? That right there is disrespectful to the artist, and flatout, not very nice either. That is the thing that I find disrespectful, I don't care how good of an artist/writer/whatitisthatyoudo, dissing other peoples fanart just really isn't right at all.
Yeah, I didn't put together her inclinations until that last episode, though. I guess I really didn't pick up that she was talking about Shizuo and Izaya in that earlier instance. Not to mention, you using different dialogue than appeared on [as] isn't helping matters.
That being said, her having that habit doesn't really make them being a couple canon. It just means she has that fantasy. I also don't think that if she didn't exist, that fans wouldn't do that. I, for some reason, allow myself to be consistently shocked at the two-dimensional way so many people tend to think. Someone actually remarked in an ep thread tonight, that because one character was upset that an other character may have possibly been killed, that the character that was upset "must have a thing for her". It was such a simple-minded, baser urges thinking comment that I wanted to headdesk myself through the foundation of my house. Because clearly, the only reason someone would care about someone else is because they want to bang them. -_-
So yes, it might be possible she'd encourage it, but if anything, she's a parody of these "shippers". People who can only think of characters and stories and interactions in terms of matchmaking. It makes me sick. Maybe I might turn out to actually love Erika if it's really true she's meant to be a mockery of these so-called fans.
I mean, really, there's sickos that think about Inuyasha getting it from his own brother. There wasn't any character in that show rooting for or imagining that!
I don't really feel the need to argue about Mikado and Masaomi. Some people just can't get it through their head that same-sex friendships can be very intimate and close without boinking being involved. It's these type of people that read civil war letters and think of the writer as being gay because they say they love their friend, whom happens to be also male, the men used to sit in close quarters and converse, etc. It's also true that in other cultures such things would never be misconstrued as "they're gay", or never even thought of in that context. But, leave it to these "fans" to immediately think sex. Blah.
Uhh, I meant to write shittily, not shittly. Edit --
Okay, so you did get permission then. Good for you. However, I don't see how it's possible this passed the "inappropiate content" muster of the ToS. People can't have gays mackin' in their icons, so why can you have it in the banner? Oh wait, is it because they're not actually kissing that you were able to get by with it? You've really got your bases covered, don't you?
That being said, it's my right to speak my mind on artwork. People can say mine looks like crap and I won't cry about it. It's happened before. I mean, come on man, if you're going to annoy me with Shizuo and Izaya up there, at least make it look like it could come out of the show, then it'd be even more irratating. Instead, it's a totally different style... drawn all... I dunno', soft-like? Maybe that's how they draw in Shojo and whatnot, but it's not how it is in DRRR!
