WAS THAT IT?!

Was that seriously, honestly, definitively, undoubtedly, the last episode of Durarara?!  As Booker T would say: You have got to be kidding me!

That's right, folks!  I am back.  Where have I been and why did I take such a sabbatical from the DRRR folder?  What's that?  You don't care?  Too bad, I'm going to explain it anyway! :smileytongue:

You see, a while back... I got sick and exhausted for a while, and got behind on the boards.  Then, when it came time for me to come back to DRRR folder in particular, I realized that with all the crazy plot twists and reveals that were happening, seemingly exponentially, certain denizens here could not be trusted to not spoil such things.  Plus, nobody was really reading or replying to my long and well thought out posts I had put so much effort into, anyway.

And, I was right!  I didn't even have to come into the folder to see a spoiler.  I foolishly happen to glance down at the "recent threads" on my home page, which is usually filled with harmless 'IB' threads, and notice that it has a thread at the top in all caps called "MASAOMI IS THE FOUNDER THE OF THE YELLOW SCARVES!"

True, before then, I had some idea that he was somehow involved with them, but not necessarily the leader.  This thread was posted right before the new episode revealing this too, making matters even worse.  Anyway, I hope that person was dealt with, because I wasn't about to go in to the folder to report it, and just get spoiled by more threads like it, that might have been there.

Now, as to the major point of my rant, and this thread... the ending.  I'm dumbfounded.  I really don't want this to be one of those great shows that sours on me because of a piss-poor resolution, but it is more and more looking that way.

The show ends by resolving an arc that was built up, but not the most gripping things:

Not only that, but I can't stand the cliche of best friends that end up fighting and hurting each other because of secrets and a "misunderstanding".  It's unnecessary, seemingly forced, and infuriating at times.  I am just glad that the 3 best friends didn't kill each other, and that it was resolved, but I still feel like it didn't need to happen, and wasn't the direction I felt the show would take, or predicted it would take.  If Kida had been turned into a villain a la Sasuke I might have lost it and ripped my hair out Homer Simpson Style!

Celty doesn't have her head back, and still hasn't kicked to the curb the deceitful, backstabbing, cowardly, disturbed, creepy, forward-speaking, personal space-violating wiener that is Shinra!  I HATE THAT GUY!  Why did she stick with him after all he did?  He's scum and she could do much better.  I know she probably doesn't know any better, but still.  Ugh.

Mikado and Anri are still not definitively a couple, whilst Masomi still has not returned from his own version of Rick Steve's Europe with the enigma that is Saki along.  I can't decide if I should hate her or not, but I wouldn't trust her, if I was him.

The troll that is Izaya is still on the loose, unpunished and unmolested for his deeds.  He also never put his plan into motion involving Celty's head and a "major conflict".

I would have liked something more to happen involving Shizuo and his brother, but Shizuo ends up pretty much the same as he started.  Admittedly, I was surprised that he survived the hit, and I think that... the show might have even taken a major turn for the better if he had died.  But, I don't know.  He doesn't really progress much after he survives, so I'm not sure what the angle is with him.  Just a bit unfufilled there.

Then we have Seiji and his creeper gf and sister.  Admittedly, I don't care as much about these three, but it would be nice to have a resolution with them as well.

Finally, there is some stuff about the final episode that just didn't sit right with me.  While most of it was genius, hilarious, and action-packed awesome, some stuff really left a bad taste in my mouth, on a show that had done great up until then.

Izaya had younger twin, lesbian, incestual sisters that were annoying and disgusting and didn't need to exist.

Erika was also not funny with her comments on the Izaya and Shizuo fight.  It just made me want to sigh and face-palm like Carl from ATHF when that happened.  It really took me out of the fight, and all it made me think of are the annoying twats on the internet constantly "shipping" (I feel less intelligent for using that word) characters, in a show where it has no place.  Especially with 2 characters that aren't even homosexuals in the first place, and hate each other.  It was immature and not funny or entertaining at all.  I HOPE that was meant to be a parody of these annoying fans, but even still... it really put me off.

From what I understand the novels were not translated nor sold in America, so I am pretty much screwed on that.  Plus, they're probably expensive, whether they are or not.

Erika didn't exhibit that characteristic at all, until the last episode.  I hope the twins and her were meant to be parodies.  Even so, they very much irked me.  "Yaoi fangirls" are a blight on the Anime community, in my opinion.  I wish they'd just stick to watching ABC Family teen dramas and leave me alone and not pollute things with their inane behavior.

You act like this is some sort of personal attack against you. If you hated the show that much, keep it to yourself. No one forced you to watch it.

You're just making yourself look bad by moaning and groaning in the show folder. It's pitiful.

my memory isnt the best but the showed her as a yaoi fangirl earlier in the series when shizuo was like "brb gonna find izaya" and erika was like "O_O omg shizzy loves izzy!!! this jus just like BL *sparkly fangirl eyes*" and the guys were like "O_O no!" in anycase yaoi isnt for everyone but to each his own right? gotta respect ones wishes and luckilly for you erika and walker made minor apperances.

I see you are acknowledging my existence once again.  I'm not sure what I did to earn such hurtful and hateful treatment, but it's interesting and amusing you choose this, of all posts, to reply to, and also twist my words around, as well.

I didn't say I hated the show.  Did I ever say that?  Nope, sure didn't.  Still, this is a message board, the whole point of it being, to have people with differing opinions and ideas interact with one another and discuss things.

I said that I was disappointed with how it ended (it doesn't have an ending), and a few other things I didn't care for.  On the whole though, I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I am just worried this ending may sour my love for the show, and I don't want that to happen... but it's a dangerous possibility.

The fact is, those twins were pointless characters, and even if they were just there to make fun of twins that get it on in various Anime, I still could have done without them.  I'm not sure the parody was quite worth the irksome nausea.

Erika's antics were also not appreciated for this major reason:   Up until that episode, she was annoying, sure.  But annoying in an adorable way.  She was funny, cute - likable.  Then, they make her into a "yaoi fangirl" in one of the cheapest, bad-joke cash-ins ever.  She's now one of the very same "yaoi fangirls" that are the bane of mine and many other manga/anime fans' existence!  If the producers' intention was to make me hate a character I previously enjoyed by turning her into an irritating "yaoi fangirl", then they've succeeded at their efforts.

Is that so?  Well, it would seem it definitely has its fair share of American fans that must have read it, and they can't all know Japanese, so you're probably right.  If I ever get the money (pfft), I'll try to find and buy the rest of the novels.

It's still annoying that the Anime didn't cover everything.  I wish somebody would have warned us of this before the show started.  And no, not even I would have considered such a warning a spoiler, as it would have gone a long way in me understanding why it ended like that, and also be less jarring and upsetting than seeing that ending 'blind', for lack of a better term.

Really?  I don't remember that at all.  And yes, Erika and Walker were annoying, but they were fun.  And as you said, they weren't major characters, which means they come in small doses and thus you get a respite from them.

Of course, I am not one to be into yaoi, but it wouldn't be so bad if its fans weren't so insane and infected regular fandoms with their nonsense.  It's something I need to learn to ignore, I guess... but it's really hard to, sometimes.

yeah it would be nice if you could buy the novels, i know i would. well good luck ~

yeah, i agree well with the series i didnt care much for the later part of it. i thought it was odd how they shifted the plot onto anri, mikado, and kida. like those arent bad chars. i just didnt like how they turned it into some teen agnst drama. i wanted more like of celtys head or izayas antics or something. but who knows maybe theyll make a 2nd seas. the company once said that if they got enough fans wanting a 2nd seas. theyd concider it so some fans started up a petition to sign if your intersted i can try and find it and link you. maybe if we get a 2nd seas. we can get a bit of closure.

yeah i remember that scene because i got such a kick out of the guys reactions :smileyvery-happy: personally i liked walker and erika i thought they were so cute and lolz but hey we all have diff. tastes so if you dont care for them thats fine.

aww not all yaoi fangirls are that bad lol. i mean certain fanbases have thier crazy annoying fans and theyre not so crazy annoying fans. like anime fans you got some that are just like "oh god i hope im never associated with that >_<" and others that are "huh i didnt know they liked anime too, cool." so i guess it depends on like the person and stuff. at least now it seems most of the shizya fangirls stick to the FC i made lol.

With as much "disappointment" as you put into your post, it was hard not to mistake it for a strong dislike. Sorry if I perhaps mis-read. :smileyindifferent:

While I will agree to an extent that this board is for discussing, I don't feel it's for putting down shows you found to be utterly so "disappointing" that you had to make an entire thread about it. A lot of people enjoy this show, and don't really feel like hearing about all the mistakes or horrible plotholes it had. It was created to be enjoyed so just leave everyone alone so we can enjoy it.

I'm sorry, but what in the world gave you the impression we wanted to hear your complaints? And you had a "love" for the show? Wow! I would never had guessed with such a thread dedicated to it's horrendous flaws.

"The fact is"? What if they weren't pointless. That's just your theory. I believe they were put in for a reason, to maybe show that Izaya had come from a normal-type (can't say entirely normal) family. That he actually still HAS a family. I think episode 25 showed Izaya's and Shizuo's siblings because it was to prove these extraordinary people with uncanny abilities and one with sociopathic behaviors, were actually human. But that's just my take.

So what? That's how she was written. Mind you, her parts aren't very long. You can't change the script or how this show was written so just ignore her parts if they bug you that much.

I might have to look into it.

Yeah, that's what it was.  I wanted more of Celty and I wanted Izaya to pay.  I like Anri, Kida, and Mikado too.  I just didn't totally care for the whole "these best friends have to become enemies now because of a tragic misunderstanding" thing it was inching toward.  I was like noooo DRRR why are you doing this?! D: It's such an infuriating plot device that has been used so many times over, that I thought a show like DRRR would be better than.  Granted, none of them died and/or became enemies, but the fact that it got as close to that as it did, or even happened at all was extremely frustrating.  I am glad for the development and character arcs they had, I just wish it could have been done differently.

Like I said, I enjoyed Walker and Erika too.  They could be annoying, but not in a bad way., if that makes sense.  I just really didn't care for them making Erika a yaoi fan.

I don't know.  I have heard stories that is enough to ever keep me from going to an Anime convention, besides all the other awful things I've heard about Anime conventions, in general.

And honestly, I don't mean to be mean, but you and your antics, probably only soured my opinion on yaoi fans even more than it already was, when you did the stuff you did around the time this show was announced and first premiering.  The Izaya and Shizuo username, among other things, also certainly did not help matters.

What I'm saying is, you did not, by any means, make me want to like, or even tolerate that fandom more.  It only made me learn to disilike it more, and distance myself further from it.  Whether your intention was to antagonize, annoy, and spoil purposefully or not, I am not sure.  But... we definitely got off to a worse foot there, when I already was a bit annoyed by your posting style.  So, I was surprised to see you talking to me in this thread.

go for it.

yeah it would of been nice if they didnt go into that direction, the last third of the series kinda soured it for me. overall though it was really enjoyable and i really ahd a fun time watching (and rewatching) it.

yeah they were a fun couple. i wanted to see more of them actually and learn more of them. well, i guess they did that to kinda parody the fujioshi otaku girls? who knows.... at least she doesnt show it very often.

haha sometimes anime fans can be so scary >_>

ahhhhhh that, yeah sorry about that if i upset you or something didnt mean to. i get into my fangirly moods. but at least i made my own little shizya FC where i can let all my fangirly antics loose and not have to worry. i figured if i made that thread you wouldnt really care. i dont know why you were so bothered by that alt, just an alt really. but ah well i posted with it for a bit to rank it up and havent used it sense. thats jus how i am usually with my alts >_> and lol well i dont hold grudges or anything. i wasnt ever really upset at you. i treat people how they treat me, and as long as you treat me civil i will do the same and youve usually been pretty civil with me, so i have no problem with you.

Well, I definitely had some things I wanted to get off my chest regarding the show, so I may have been pretty harsh, but I never sugar-coat things.  I say how I feel.  That being said, never in that post does it say I hate or dislike the show.  I criticized specific things.  I also never said it had plot-holes, only things that weren't addressed yet because it's incomplete, plus I can't readily experience the rest of the story easily.  There's no second season, and I may have a hard time finding and/or affording the books.  There's a difference.

Actually, you're wrong.  These boards are for discussing these shows.  The whole board is not a "show fan club" where criticism is not allowed.  That would be a very boring board, after all.  And, if you don't feel like hearing my thoughts on it, you can go back to ignoring my posts, like you have been up until now.

I'm a bit disappointed that you would take this opinion.  It's anti-Freedom of Speech.  As long as I don't break any board rules, I can voice my opinion within those rules, however unpopular it might be, such is the purpose of Freedom of Speech.  It's to protect unpopular speech, in particular.  This isn't England where you can be charged for "offensive speech crimes", after all.

Like I said, if you don't want to hear it, go back to pretending I don't exist.  You did it fine up until now.  Or, you could be mature and debate and discuss with me, like cid is.  It's a shocking concept, I realize this!  If you are really that insecure that you can't take the slightest negative or critical views of something you like, it makes me wonder how you've stayed on a message board this long.

But Shizuo's brother has already been an integral part of his backstory.  He wasn't new.  And, while Izaya does act sociopathic and says how he loves humans, perhaps hinting that he himself isn't human, none of this directly suggests he isn't human, or not relatable.  And besides, why does he have to have a human side to him?  Sometimes just pure evil villains are the most fun.  But, you could be right on this.  Still, the sisters were annoying, and their kiss made me want to throw up.  They weren't funny nor entertaining and didn't seem to add much.

Of course I can't change the script, but I can still voice my feelings on Erika.  And, I am not someone who ignores things in that way.  If I'm reading a book, I don't skip or gloss over pages.  I don't change the channels between shows on TV, and won't even watch something if it's already started.  I want to make sure I get the full story, and don't miss anything.  It's also worth noting, that her parts didn't bug me at all until the last episode.  She was a sort of "adorable annoying".  But, her being a yaoi fan, a type of person that irks me to no end, I just could not take.

Angry about Izaya trolling and yet here you are and here I am and here they are ain't it wonderful :smileyvery-happy:

A fun fact about Durarara is that it's loosely based on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. So if you don't like the story idea blame the Dynasty Warriors fans.

Izaya's sisters had more of a role in the manga from what I have read. I wouldn't get to bent outta shape about all the yaoi shipping and the twincest kiss. I mean it could have been worse they could have both made out with Izaya....Of course that may have made things better >_>...

None the less why all the dramatics for just coming back? I know you haven't been going much I have seen you post every week in the bleach folder. Overall the show did have a lame ending and not what I think it deserved to go out on, but I have seen shows end worse or not give an ending at all. The way the show ended it could easily get another season since nothing was really resolved.

We don't have a problem with you criticizing the show. What people have a problem with is criticizing fans. You can say that you don't care for Yaoi I know I don't, but you seem to take it another step and because someone says that they do like it you take it as an attack against yourself. Then sh!t hits the fan and here we all are once again.

If they are all out in English, I might think about it.  No sense in buying some of them, and then be prevented to experience the end once more, because they aren't all out.  If I ever get some money, I might look for them.  Sadly, I've already shot my wad for Christmas this year, haha.

It bugged me as well, but it didn't make me hate it entirely.  I think the show is overall a good show, but that story arc and the non-ending are just kinda' punches to the gut.

Which couple?  Do you mean Erika and Walker?  I didn't get the feeling they were a couple, just two more people in the van and fellow manga fans.  I'm sure there was some kind of parody in mind, that was lost on me, but honestly, I thought she was just parodying yaoi fangirls.  Maybe I could get over it, and yes, it is good that that part of her is only a rare abberation.

Well, I read an article on ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com back when they still had articles.  It was the top ten worst things about Anime Cons, or something.  Among them were B.O., "Con Flu", the yaoi fangirls slapping people with paddles and harrassing cosplayers that are of a popular couple, among other things.  I've been to Conventions for Card/Comic/Toy Collecting, so I'm definitley not scared of cons in general, but this article only made me fear the Anime ones even more.  Not to mention what my friend told me about them....

It wasn't just the fact you made an alt.  It was the fact that it had character names in relation to each other.  No names were known, and no one knew of the Izaya and Shizuo rivarly.  So, even if it didn't spoil a non-existent relationship, it indirectly spoiled the rivalry.  Not to mention you and others constantly fangasming over them.  That's really bad if it's something you know nothing about.  It can lead to over-hype, straight up spoilage, and a host of other problems.  Really, the fact that there was a yaoi angle to it was only more fuel to the flame.

Yeah, I didn't mind the fan club, though it was a slight bother, at least you had it contained, and you are free to make whatever threads you wish, after all.  It's also good to hear that you didn't mean any intentional ill will, and don't harbor any toward me.  Perhaps we can call a truce and I can put away that axe, then? :smileywink: I mean... I only really had the axe, just in case the worst was true, because of a misunderstanding (callback to 3 friends arc).  Maybe I don't have to worry about you after all, then.  Haha.

P.S. I forgot to comment on the petition.  I doubt it would do any good, but if the producers are aware and will respond to it, I'll definitely do what I can, and sign it.  I'm a bit shocked that they wouldn't just animate it all.  DRRR seems to have great potential, assuming the true ending is executed well.

A fun fact about Freedom of Speech is that it becomes Freedom of the Press when it's typed. While they act in about the same way Freedom of the Press has a nasty bit called slander aka defamation which is when things are treated less as opinion and more as a fact while still being of an untrue nature. Fun facts :3

That's fine! Really. Everyone has their different opinions on stuff. Just try to take others around you on the boards into consideration okay? ^_^ That's all I'm asking! And luckily for you her parts were short huh? And I think it was hinted she was a yaoi fan in another episode...after Shizuo left to go find Izaya.

My entire post got shrinked. >_O

UGH.

I spent a long time replying to each part but it mostly got deleted...Thought I could get a draft back but it went POOF!

Wow, even you decided to reply, Hunter?  I had suspected that you and Punk had gotten your heads together and decided I was bad news.  I'm not sure if I'm right, but I decided since it was just meaningless internet drama, that I would leave it alone and not let it bother me.  There are other people to talk to, after all.  Still, I never would have suspected a thread like this would garner a response from you two.  To quote Spock - Fascinating.

I assume this was a joke.  Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a period of Chinese history.  And yes, it's had countless media based on it.  I have to say I am not super-familiar with that period, or maybe I forgot those parts in class, or wasn't taught it, but that is interesting to know that this show is seemingly based on that.  Hmm.

I'm not sure why you keep saying "manga".  From what I understand, DRRR is a series of so-called "Light Novels", whatever those are.  Maybe it's like the Young Adult novels of Japan.  In any case, the Anime only adapted it to a certain point, and since this episode was an OVA, I had assumed the sisters and uncharacteristic Erika behavior were put in for shits and giggles.  Maybe I am wrong on that, and perhaps you're correct that I shouldn't let those two things get to me, too much.  It just... seemed so out of place, and is also something I don't care for.

Haven't been gone much, you mean?  Actually I was.  I fell behind on all the folders when I was ill and lost sleep, and I still haven't managed to get back into the habit of following all the ep thread premiers as I would like to, even for Bleach.  I did manage to participate in just about all the Brotherhood ones, up 'til the end, though.  And, while I did come back to other folders, I never came back to this one, for the aforementioned reasons in my first post.  And most of the dramatics weren't meant to be taken seriously, honestly.  Not all of them, anyway.

But yes, the show is over but the story isn't over.  It's the worst kind of punch in the gut.  What's more, the novels may not all be translated or easily found.  It's quite unfortunate.  Plus, there was no warning.  You can see why I would be upset.  After all, at first, I thought that was the actual ending.  Things just coming full circle.  It was quite distressing, to say the least, when I thought that, but now we have the issue of hunting down elusive novels or waiting for a second season that may never come.

(It won't let me type under this quote for some reason.. grr)

I don't think you understand the issue.  It's not merely that they say they are fans.  That, I could deal with.  It's the polluting of regular discussion with this stuff, especially when it becomes a type of spam, as Cid had been doing way back when.

Keep in mind, I can't stand shipping in general, but the last thing I want to hear about is someone's fantasies involving characters that are supposed to be enemies, getting it on.  It's an insult to those characters and the canon of the story.  It really breaks things down and trivializes them.  I'm here to discuss the show and its characters, not someone's imagined fap material.  It's like they are insulting me and the show when they do this.  A sort of fourth wall destruction of discussion, if you get my meaning.

I would compare it to perhaps myself and some friends having an in-depth Star Wars discussion, and someone walks up and goes "You know it's just a movie, right.  It isn't real!  Teehee!"  Well, of course, I know that.  Still, that line is insulting, trivializing, needless, and annoying.

It's the same as going "Izaya and Shizuo could get it on".  Yeah, and your point?  I really wanted to hear your fantasies?  No, I didn't.  And the fact is, Izaya and Shizuo don't do that.  In fact, they hate each other, and aren't even gay, and your line isn't amusing or entertaining or necessary in the least.

Perhaps this explanation gives some perspective.

Now was that necessary? She had another stance on your opinion so you attacked her directly? As for a mature debate how is that possible when every time someone has another say you attack them like this? I am surprised more people haven't ignored you than already have with debates like that. It may be a shocking concept, but sometimes I till things like they are without sugar coating them. Treat others how you would like them to treat you. If you don't want other people to take crap personal then stop trying to make it so when they are talking about the show.

Nowhere have I claimed that my opinions were the gospel truth.  They are merely my own views.  If this is "The Press", think of this as an "op-ed".  I'm also known to actually admit when I'm wrong, or even change my mind on things.  I'm not sure where you're going with this.

Punk - I clicked reply, and your post actually changed as I quoted it.  That was weird.  Anyway, from what you added, it seems you lost part of your post?  I thought it was odd that you only responded to that one small section.  Sorry to hear that.  I hope you didn't lose it completely.  I await a further edit of that post, if you want to do that.

Is that really an attack?  Maybe it's a little harsh, but is it not correct?  She said to not make a post like this and just leave everyone alone and not voice opposing views.  That's basically what she said.  And really, if my intent was really to stir the pot, why would I make my own thread, which people can easily bypass.  If I was really doing this just for the sake of annoyance, I'd do it in a popular, positive thread about the show, or something.

I think that's a sign of insecurity and intolerance.  Sure, we all have to put up with people criticizing things we don't like, or saying things we don't like.  That's part of life.  We deal with it.  We engage them or ignore them.  That's our choice.   However, telling them they shouldn't have made the thread and to just keep it to themselves is nothing short of an attack, if you want to go that route.

I call all that stuff manga's even doujins. It's all paper to me.

As for me and CAP it's not much of a plot. It's for the sake of less drama, but as you can tell I can't let my fangirls go into debates/them being put down for their opinions alone.

The thing is while you can't stand shipping lot's of people love it. It's nothing against you as you have admitted you feel that it is. If you find the fanbase as annoying as you say it is then perhaps you shouldn't be a part of it. You getting so hot under the collar about it isn't going to do much other than make more people try and ignore you. Once again we can put up with about anything said about a show, but trashing the fans is going over the line. It's not personal nor is it insulting to the show. It's actually mentioned in the show a lot but because it is you seem to hate that character as well.

As for the perspective all it did was show that you will feel attacked and hate anyone who thinks differently. You boast about freedom of speech but you want to censor the boards. You say people are attacking you when they are enjoying conversations with each other.  The world won't mend to your needs and I know you won't mend to ours. Either way if you want to be respected you need to show respect and earn it. Not insult people and expect them to tell you that you are right and they shouldn't enjoy the show the way they enjoy it.

You know me I just like to add fun facts :3
