Was that seriously, honestly, definitively, undoubtedly, the last episode of Durarara?! As Booker T would say: You have got to be kidding me!
That's right, folks! I am back. Where have I been and why did I take such a sabbatical from the DRRR folder? What's that? You don't care? Too bad, I'm going to explain it anyway!
You see, a while back... I got sick and exhausted for a while, and got behind on the boards. Then, when it came time for me to come back to DRRR folder in particular, I realized that with all the crazy plot twists and reveals that were happening, seemingly exponentially, certain denizens here could not be trusted to not spoil such things. Plus, nobody was really reading or replying to my long and well thought out posts I had put so much effort into, anyway.
And, I was right! I didn't even have to come into the folder to see a spoiler. I foolishly happen to glance down at the "recent threads" on my home page, which is usually filled with harmless 'IB' threads, and notice that it has a thread at the top in all caps called "MASAOMI IS THE FOUNDER THE OF THE YELLOW SCARVES!"
True, before then, I had some idea that he was somehow involved with them, but not necessarily the leader. This thread was posted right before the new episode revealing this too, making matters even worse. Anyway, I hope that person was dealt with, because I wasn't about to go in to the folder to report it, and just get spoiled by more threads like it, that might have been there.
Now, as to the major point of my rant, and this thread... the ending. I'm dumbfounded. I really don't want this to be one of those great shows that sours on me because of a piss-poor resolution, but it is more and more looking that way.
The show ends by resolving an arc that was built up, but not the most gripping things:
Not only that, but I can't stand the cliche of best friends that end up fighting and hurting each other because of secrets and a "misunderstanding". It's unnecessary, seemingly forced, and infuriating at times. I am just glad that the 3 best friends didn't kill each other, and that it was resolved, but I still feel like it didn't need to happen, and wasn't the direction I felt the show would take, or predicted it would take. If Kida had been turned into a villain a la Sasuke I might have lost it and ripped my hair out Homer Simpson Style!
Celty doesn't have her head back, and still hasn't kicked to the curb the deceitful, backstabbing, cowardly, disturbed, creepy, forward-speaking, personal space-violating wiener that is Shinra! I HATE THAT GUY! Why did she stick with him after all he did? He's scum and she could do much better. I know she probably doesn't know any better, but still. Ugh.
Mikado and Anri are still not definitively a couple, whilst Masomi still has not returned from his own version of Rick Steve's Europe with the enigma that is Saki along. I can't decide if I should hate her or not, but I wouldn't trust her, if I was him.
The troll that is Izaya is still on the loose, unpunished and unmolested for his deeds. He also never put his plan into motion involving Celty's head and a "major conflict".
I would have liked something more to happen involving Shizuo and his brother, but Shizuo ends up pretty much the same as he started. Admittedly, I was surprised that he survived the hit, and I think that... the show might have even taken a major turn for the better if he had died. But, I don't know. He doesn't really progress much after he survives, so I'm not sure what the angle is with him. Just a bit unfufilled there.
Then we have Seiji and his creeper gf and sister. Admittedly, I don't care as much about these three, but it would be nice to have a resolution with them as well.
Finally, there is some stuff about the final episode that just didn't sit right with me. While most of it was genius, hilarious, and action-packed awesome, some stuff really left a bad taste in my mouth, on a show that had done great up until then.
Izaya had younger twin, lesbian, incestual sisters that were annoying and disgusting and didn't need to exist.
Erika was also not funny with her comments on the Izaya and Shizuo fight. It just made me want to sigh and face-palm like Carl from ATHF when that happened. It really took me out of the fight, and all it made me think of are the annoying twats on the internet constantly "shipping" (I feel less intelligent for using that word) characters, in a show where it has no place. Especially with 2 characters that aren't even homosexuals in the first place, and hate each other. It was immature and not funny or entertaining at all. I HOPE that was meant to be a parody of these annoying fans, but even still... it really put me off.
