This was one of the weaker episodes, in my opinion. Oh well - they can't all be winners.
It's real. It's so real. It's f**king beautiful.

I thought for sure that Otis was James Cromwell. Turns out it's his doppleganger, E.J. Callahan.
On the other hand, they've acted in a collective 248 titles - but never once have they worked together.
It's real. It's so real. It's f**king beautiful.

I wasn't disappointed. While I'm pretty sure this episode is referencing the movie "batteries not included" (which I've never seen), there's a delicate balance between silly-stupid (anything Brett says) and trippy-surreal twists that still leave me dizzy. The whole ending where it was all a ride is like the cop-out "that was all a dream" endings used in a lot of TV shows. EVERYTHING is a riff on a cliche'. High point: "The Heathcliff, also known as the Homeless Garfield." I can't picture Heathcliff without seeing the iconic fish skeleton cartoon cats are so fond of. By the time they got to the shoe that sings Al Jolson, I lost it. When the shoe killed the bad guy, he was still singing, or making some gnawing sound on dude's neck. Nice touch.
I'm so glad I'm not discovering this gem on DVD 20 years after the fact. (I'm thinking of another Fox show back in the "Get A Life" era, "Brisco County, Jr." I missed the first time around). This is a future cult cassic.

I thought this was a pretty funny episode.... In my opinion, the overall theme, a government entity trying to kidnap "King of the Tramps", ties nicely into how most homeless people tend to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, along with an un-healthy daily dosage of alchohol or narcotics or both; thus they actually believe that the government is trying to kidnap them, priceless. I almost died when the gang finally figures out that the stinky bum who they kicked out the door days before actually has a "hot tip", and they open the same door to the alley only to find him still sitting there, near perfection.... Only outdone by hearing the stinky bum's auto response of "I'm leaving, I'm leaving", absolute perfection....
On another note, I just got the "Bud Dwyer" (found out who he was) reference from the "Honor Thy Marshal" episode, definitely worth it to look up.

***Disclaimer*** Don't view the actual Bud Dwyer suicide video, unless you want to watch something very, very disturbing.

I don't know......this is one of the weirdest shows ever. I agree with the point about the mixture of stupid-sillyness and the surreal twists, it's definitely a big thing with the show. Every episodes leaves you with a false memory of it, perhaps making one think "what did I watch again?" like there was tramps and they're like trying to harness the power of their imagination, and it was all a ride? What happened? I WAS paying attention!" LOL. Maybe the humour is discovered when you try to explain this to someone else. I don't know what the gimmick is yet....
It's just so strange, and I always think it was better than it was after reading the commentary on the boards. There is alot of next level shit going on, that I guess I don't get the first go round....
and yet, even then I'm not sure if the thing to get is worth it. IS the show really that funny? I don't know, I'll have to rewatch it a many good times to really find out. However, the casual fan will NEVER like this show because on the surface it's really actually kind of hard to watch. In comparison to mainstream type stuff on other channels.

No worries...
If you don't drop a few, it means you aren't trying anything new. The 'hot tip room' and the term "light months" were both hilarious. This just isn't the episode I'd recommend to first timers.
The 'sky captain' reference at the end was great.
It's real. It's so real. It's f**king beautiful.

it's alright, no apology needed. I'm sorry if my review was harsh at all. That "kind of" was meant to soften the blow as much as possible.
Much appreciated. And you guys should be totally honest on here. We're happy you like the show. Only two more left!

I've noticed other carry-overs from earlier episodes too.... For instance, they played the "Blues" episode riff for a second in the "little dude" episode, and a couple others I have noticed but can't remember right now... Strangely though, Brett bit his own leg off in the first episode this season and had it the next week. Could be a prosthetic I suppose......

I thought this episode was quite good. It had the sci-fi twist, and as far as it all being a ride, enjoy the ride baby. KING OTIS

So did this episode technically not exist?
I hate it when tv shows pull these off!

Well, the ending implied that none of this show is real, and it's all just elaborate amusement park rides.
"Let's go on the skycrime ride again!"

On the other hand, maybe King Otis had to re-conceal the truth about the hobos from the US Marshals, and just 'imagined' a new reality that would keep their secret safe.
It's real. It's so real. It's f**king beautiful.
