The best answer is that Fooly Cooly means absolutely nothing. It only has subjective meaning for whomever makes his or her own meaning to it.

That, and hanky panky...

I like FLCL, but you have to have seen most of the stuff that they are making fun of to get what they are trying to do with the series. Anyway, Gainax was coming down off their project NGE and they needed to cut loose a bit. Thats why they made FLCL: just for the hell of it.

I think it basically means fooling around, if it means anything. Kamon the Great said it himself.

yeah.."fooling around" is more applicable...
but I heard its the nickname of the band that plays its soundtrack..."The Pillows"...
cause they say it: "Furi Kiri"..
so..its whateva that means...
I suppose you'll have to ask the band themselves...

gotta admit, this is my first time watching FLCL and I'm a bit confused too. The closest thing that I have been able to pick out is something to do with sex. i mean the boners popping outta the kid's head kinda give it away.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:
fooly cooly, or furi kuri, is sort of like a pun/play on words in japanese. It means three things: chestnuts, kneading bread, and tweaking someone's boobs.

the three of them are adressed in episode one, and bread is a recurring theme.

i'm not sure how exactly it applies to the show, the breast tweaking is sort of like a metaphor for growing up, y'know, becoming interested in sex and stuff. the underlying theme/moral of the story is that naota-kun is the most mature of everyone, because he's not afraid to be a child. other people put on airs to be more mature (amuro, for instance), but naota allows himself to live out his childhood while he can.

The thing about FLCL is not to take it too seriously.  Don't look for logic or plot until about the third episode and abandon any ideas you have about whether or not things can come out of your head.  It's like an art project wherein everything that happens is actually a metaphor for something else (like swinging the bat).

It's a six-episode inside joke for animé fans/animators.

fooly coolly, or in japanese terms, furi curi.  it means nothing really in the anime.  mainly because no one finds out.  but in the manga, theres the scene when takkun is in the hospital and haruko is explaining everything about why his brain is gone etc. etc.  and she gives him this fake psycho disease.  and takkun says "furi curi?" and haruko responds with "yes, all teens go thru this, but youre different etc. etc."

so....i dont know i hope that helps.

Zapp Brannigan- "Can't you ask a little more sexfully?"
Leela- ".............Please, BIG Z."
Zapp Brannigan- "certainly, but first you'll have to get rid of that thing. That's the law Leela, and Brannigan's law is like Brannigan's love, Hard and Fast."

that's sort of adressed in the show hospital scene, albeit not as thoroughly. i believe it was in the director's commentary that the director explained that this was intentionally misleading and was not, in fact, the definition of furi kuri as used in the show.

the title's not really important, actually. it's just a really artsy explanation for what amounts to a pun.

You need to watch it through about 3 times for you to understand it.  It moves to fast to pick it up instantly.  It actually has a plot if you understand it. It's a great show.  Rivals Cowboy Bebop.

I like that people discuss this on the Comedy boards. I watched FLCL and thought it was great, even when I didn't understand it. When I did get it, it became even better, though that wasn't until the 3rd time around. I didn't like it for the action, but the humor, and I thought that the artwork was more involved with the jokes than the storyline. So should the Comedy Board try to claim FLCL for it's own? Is it worth raising the ire of the Action Board?
