Bessie's FMA US release manga thread *no spoilers*

in honor of bessie the cow...
i present to you...

BESSIE'S FMA US RELEASE
MANGA THREAD!

This thread is for the discussion of
volumes of FMA manga
which have been released in the US,
so far volumes 1-5.
(now we'll all have someplace to obsess about FMA when the series ends in *gasp* 7 weeks!)

The rulz (which i mostly stole from Gluttony's pwnsome thread):

1. No spoilers of the anime or of future manga volumes.  Spoilers WILL NOT be tolerated under any circumstances.
2. No scans of the manga.  You'll just have to be descriptive.
3. No links to scans of the manga.  I do not wish for this thread to be a pit of piracy.
4. I would appreciate it, if you have read the Japanese version of a volume that is just being released, if you would exercise courteous restraint in discussing it until a few "dubbies" have gotten it and begin the discussion.
5. Follow board rules, that means no flaming or spamming.  Let's make this thread as pwnsome as gluttony's and ghost's amazing threads!

And now, for your obligatory linkage:

Gluttony's Official FMA Manga Thread  This is the place to go if you've read all the manga volumes that have been released in Japan.
FMA continuing discussion vol.2 *no spoilers*  Ghost's incredible anime discussion thread.
sparkly roy just because.  :smileywink:

i hope everyone has fun with this.  it looks like volume 5, the most recent volume, is where the manga begins to split from the anime.

You guys are crazy...that cow is Arakawa's signature character. Bessie is the cow from episode 17.

I don't remember the first five volumes. But I'm going to guess it is around the early thirties/late twenties.

w00t for poor spelling.

I like the manga plenty fine, but the story line is too different. sorry since I can't give off spoilers, but it's VERY much different from the ever so popular anime.

I thought volume 5 of the manga was the weakest so far, to me.  I liked the way the anime handled having the boys experience seeing a new life brought into the world better than in the manga, and also Paninya just really annoyed me.

I do like the changes in the manga too, though - for instance that Izumi actually saw Hohenheim on her last trip to Central.  I think he's going to play a different role in the manga than in the anime.

Anyway, great idea to start this thread, venus!  Yay!

oh, blah, you're totally right.  i got confused.  i thought arakawa's cow was named bessie, but it looks like her cow is named arakawa, i guess.  oh well, now it's bessie's thread, no changing it now.

i was disappointed, too, that ed didn't deliver the baby.  it looks like winry did a great job, though.  and what's up with ed not being squeamish about touching the pregnant belly?!  however, i did like the way dominic lived way out in the country; he always struck me as too much of a loner to be a city man.

w00t!  8 whole posts!  well, this thread got off to a rip-roaring start :smileyvery-happy:

so, in the interest of shameless self-promotion, i'll start posting chapter summaries.  they'll be a handy reference for later.

VOLUME 1: Chapters 1-4

"Teachings that do not speak of pain have no meaning... because humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return."

CHAPTER 1: The Two Alchemists.

our introduction to the story as told by arakawa begins much like the anime, with a broadcast of cornello's sermon on the sun god, leto.  ed and al are having a bite at a sidewalk diner in lior, and the bartender asks if they are street performers.  ed tells him they are there to look for something, then asks what the broadcast is.  the townspeople tell him about cornello and his ability to perform miracles.  as he stands up to leave, al hits his head on the radio hanging above him, breaking it.  he draws a circle, and BOOM!  fixes the radio, to the amazement of the townspeople.  the boys introduce themselves as the famous elric brothers, and several people recognize the name, but mistake al for being the "fullmetal".

then we meet rose, on her way to temple to make an offering.  she seems so happy, all thanks to cornello, who they say has the ability to raise the dead; perhaps her dead boyfriend could be revived.  ed doesn't like the sound of that.  we see cornello, finishing up his sermon, and being praised by his lackeys.  rose arrives, and wants to know when he will be able to... but he says it is not yet time.  ed and al show up in the church, although ed says he is not religious.  rose proclaims her faith, but ed refutes it, saying he'd much rather study science than wait around for god to do things.

once again, we see cornello and his "miracles", all fueled by a red stone ring.  ed and al recognize it as alchemy, and wonder why he can bypass the "laws".  they request an audience with cornello, who instantly suspects them.  when asked if the boys should be sent away, he replies, "let's just say, they never came here."  the boys enter, and a guard pulls out a gun and shoots al's head off.  of course, he stands right up and clocks the guard, while ed takes care of the other toadies.  rose is astounded to see that al is hollow.  the boys, rose hiding inside al, enter the anteroom, where cornello is waiting.  cornello reveals his evil plan to use the pstone to rule the nation.  al reveals a horrified rose.  cornello repeats his hollow promise to resurrect her dead boyfriend, and rose believes him.  cornello sics a lion/dragon chimera on ed, and he pulls off his cloak to reveal his automail, the mark of his sin, and the reason he is called... THE FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST!

venus - I'm so glad to see that you made this thread - even though I'm up to date on the Japanese releases, I've never gotten into Gluttony's thread (for no real reason other than by the time I was up to date it was already huge and I don't jump on the new chapters quite as quickly as everyone else, so any discussion is often over by the time I read the new chapter) , so I'd love to refresh my memory and jump into discussions in here. But not to worry, I know how to behave myself :smileywink:

CHAPTER 2: The Price of Life

a flashback to ed and al's earliest research on human transmutation shows the boys in a library, and ed is sure he's found the way to bring back their lost mother.  all they wanted was to see her smile again, even if it meant breaking the laws of alchemy.  when the transmutation failed, ed lost his leg, and al lost his whole body.  even after ed's horrible injury, he exchanged his right arm for al's soul, and put it in a suit of armour.  ed asks rose if she is willing to make such a sacrifice.  cornello laughs at their failure.  al demands cornello give up the stone.  cornello creates a machine gun from his walking stick and starts blasting away.  ed puts up a stone wall using alchemy, and they make a run for the door, taking rose with them.  breaking through the locked door, the threesome find themselves faced by a group of townspeople, but ed easily scares them off by transmuting his arm into a blade.

rose leads the boys to cornello's broadcasting room, where ed cooks up a scheme.  al steals the bell from the church tower, and while rigging it up, he explains to rose that their sacrifice wasn't adequate: the thing they brought back wasn't even human.

cornello catches up with ed in the broadcast room, where ed baits him into admitting aloud that he considers his followers to be pawns for war.  ed reveals the switch that controls the broadcast, turned on, of course.  al holds up the bell so the broadcast can be heard all over town.  cornello attacks ed, who brandishes his blade and chops off the end of cornello's gun.  suddenly, as cornello attempts to restore the gun, something goes awry and his arm becomes twisted metal.  the stone cracks!  it was a fake.  ed glooommms!!!  this better be some kind of joke!  he transmutes a giant statue of leto, which blasts cornello with a stone fist.

suddenly, rose finds herself without anything to believe in.  ed, pitiless, says she'll have to find that on her own, at least she has strong legs to take her forward.

the townspeople are p.o.'ed, and come looking for cornello.  he escapes into a room, where we see lust and gluttony waiting for him.  he demands to know why they gave him a fake stone, to which lust replies, "please.  did you think we would hand the real thing over to a person like you?"  cornello heats up, but lust gives him the finger... nail, to the head.  just when things were going so well... "father will be furious," lust says.

hehe, now we have a whole new batch of subbies to worry about.  :smileyvery-happy:  but i know you are trustworthy, luna.

i made the thread on saturday morning, and i think the anticipation for episode 45 broadcast overwhelmed it.  but i hope some more people drop by to discuss the manga.  it will keep going long after we finish the anime in march.

i'll post more chapter summaries later on today.

I disagree. Rush Valley is boring and filler, the less time spent there the better. The anime treated it well, although it was interesting when, in the anime, when Winry came back home to Resembool with Schezka, Pinako said "Oh, I thought you were supposed to be in Rush Valley, studying", when she never asked Pinayo's mechanic to be her teacher in the anime, which is something that happened in the manga. Just found that interesting.

So, um, why are you darkening the text for the chapter summaries?  We can talk about all that stuff, right? *is mildly confused*

Yay, luna's in the thread!  I might take your path eventually and read on ahead, but right now I get my weekly FMA fix with the anime.  I feel like FMA is a drug sometimes...it's so addicting.

And, to contribute to the manga discussion - I love the manga.  I love how it's so different from the anime from the very beginning even though they both start out with the same basic storyline.  Probably one of my favorite depictions that Arakawa gives of emotion and the predictament that Al's in is at the end of the chapter where Al is staring at himself in the mirror just after his run-in with Barry the Chopper.  I thought the whole "is Al real" situation was handled a little better in the manga than in the anime.  I liked it better, anyway.

Hey, good idea.  Continuing no spoiler manga discussion thread, huh?  I'll keep tabs on it.  I don't actually own any of the manga volumes (I've found ways to mooch from my sister so far), but I have read them all through Vol. 5.  I'll probably buy some of the newer ones as they come out though.  Some general comments about the series so far:

- The early parts of the manga were very similar to the equivalent parts in the anime, but there were still enough small differences to keep them somewhat interesting.

- I sort of liked the anime's version of the Lab 5 arc better since it wasn't as condensed.  That whole part just felt like a much bigger deal in the anime.  Although I will say Envy's reaction to Ed breaking his automail in the manga was pretty funny.

- Hughes's death wasn't any easier to read about than it was to watch.

- Kinda weird that at this point in the anime, we knew about Sloth and Greed, but here in the manga, they have yet to introduce any homunculi beyond Envy.

- Rush Valley was interesting in the vastly different way it played out, and it had some pretty funny parts, but I kinda wish maybe they hadn't spent quite so long there.

- Looks like it's dropped back into being more similar to the anime now that they've met Izumi, especially with that flashback scene, although it was pretty weird for them to start expanding on things I had known since episode 3 in the anime at the equivalent point in the manga to episode 27.  I expect it to start getting vastly different from here on out.

Total agreement on that one.

I feel the same way about Ed vs Scar in Chapters 6/7. For some reason, Al's reaction to what's happening seems to hit a little harder when reading it.

yay, i'm glad you all showed up!  i just didn't know what i'd do with myself when FMA ends in 6 weeks, then i remembered the manga.  sweet!

silent: honestly, i darkened the text because i saw maenos darken his summaries.  i'm just a maenos wannabe.  :smileytongue:  i figured he must have done it just in case someone wandered into a thread and hadn't seen the episode, and that was reason enough for me.  but anything that has been released in the US (so far, up through volume 5 of the manga, and episode 45 of the anime) is okay to discuss in here.

boxers: the US release runs through chapter 21.  i'm hoping to have summaries of each of those chapters up and available before the next volume comes out the first week of march.
