So yeah, to at least try to keep this on topic...manga...hmmm...umm...oh, wait, I think I've got something. I did notice that I'm having a kind of hard time following the timeline of the manga. The anime was kinda tough, but as far as the manga goes I'm utterly lost. Stuff is occurring that I recognize from the anime, but it feels like things are happening in totally different orders and it's hard for me to figure out sometimes whether I'm reading a flashback or if it's happening now, or what. Any chance of a timeline for what we have of the manga so far anywhere?

Manga timeline confuses me because a lot of the same things happen in the anime, but they're in a different order.  So, I'm lost with you.

You're hard on Scar, aren't you?  I really liked his character in the anime (I'm not saying you don't), but that includes how he was portrayed.  I mean, the dude had no arms in the end and he just kept going and going...

I know a little bit about manga Hohenheim, so I wouldn't be able to participate in your bet.  I don't know a whole lot, but when reading through the walk-throughs on Blue Bird's Illusion, there were some references to his character in the manga (not the anime, so I was on equal ground on that bet) and what he's like.

As for Dante - I don't think we'll see a Dante in the manga.  I'm probably wrong because Dante is too good a name to pass up with the seven deadly sins and all those parallels, but right now it just doesn't look like she'll have a part in this story.

I would assume you're implying that manga Hohenheim is definitely different than anime Hohenheim...how exciting! I can't wait to see how this ends up! Stupid manga, taking so long to release...

As for Scar, I always loved the character, and was impressed with him but at the same time I did feel that in the eyes of a lot of people the terrible things he did were overlooked in favor of what he did to help people. I mean, he did blow the brains out of several state alchemists, which can only really be categorized as an act of revenge. I just like that the manga isn't really sugar-coating him yet.

I'm curious, if Dante shows up, whether she'll be the same person even, as some of the circumstances that surrounded her in the anime are too obviously not present in the manga. She may just show up as a really minor character, maybe Hohe's assistant or something...for all we know he might have murdered her in his attempt at finding the Pstone. Wow, all of a sudden I'm really suspicious of manga Hohe, and feeling the evil side in me awakening...Bherm will be thrilled. :smileyvery-happy:

I'm implying no such thing.  I just said that I know a little bit about his character in the manga.  That may mean that he's a good guy or it may mean that he's a bad guy.  The references I read only referenced the manga, so at the time I didn't know if he was going to be the same or not as in the anime.  I bet the way I did in the anime based solely off the anime, although if I could, I'd probably change my bet.  I don't feel like he's all that good a guy in the anime anymore even though he did show that he had a change of heart.  I still can't overlook everything he did.  But, that's beside the point here.  I just don't want you or anyone else to think I'm hinting.  He may be the same, he may not.  And I don't know that much as it is.

About Scar's portrayal in the anime - I'm not watching any of FMA until I have all of the dvds.  I've still only seen the last couple of eps once, while with most of them I watched them two times (more if I wanted to check on something), so a lot of it is unclear in my mind.  I want to have an FMA marathon and try to see the series with somewhat new eyes when I can finally do it with nice quality dvds.  Once I do that, I'll see if I have a different impression about Scar.  You're right.  Just as I can't forget the things that Hohenheim has done, I can't discount Scar's actions, either.

I have trouble deciding if the bet was settled fairly because as I said earlier, I never felt that we defined the standards for good and evil clearly, so someone like Bherm was looking for Hohe to be perfect, while I was more inclined to let go of his past actions and look at how he had matured and his outlooks and perspectives had changed. Guess this is one area where I am paranoid, though, is with anime characters sometimes. I had that instinct that manga Hohe might be different and I immediately ran with it to the opposite extreme from my point of view on him in the anime. I doubt it will be so, but it will be fun to go from this perspective for a while and see how it changes things for me. I didn't see you as hinting, sorry if it came across that way, mostly I was just having fun.

I can't help but watch the new DVDs when I get them, at least once, just to remember the episodes on them clearly, but I also want to have a giant marathon when I finally have them all and end it with the movie. I may change my perspectives on a lot of things when I do that, but for now I can only remember a lot of that stuff and hope that my memory serves me well.

Yeah, I can also see some reasons why Hohe should have been considered evil, and Bherm never let me forget that I admitted it to him in an AIM chat. I didn't care much about that side bet, I just had fun wearing Legato for a few days, it just seemed so weird. I guessed already a long time before the bet was settled that it would end the way it did, though I was nervous a couple times. I can still only imagine what Bherm would have subjected me to if he'd had charge of my sig.

I admired FMA so much that I'm specifically saving money towards collecting things as they come out, I can't help it. Right now nothing serious that I want, so it's not that big a deal, really. I also have the tin preordered though...and I almost want to get a job at the bookstore so I can get employee discounts on the manga (tries valiantly to stay sort of kind of maybe on topic). I'll have to ask Maenos at some point if he knows where we can find a manga timeline and maybe lessen some of the confusion on that end.

The manga timeline....

The confusion in timeline occurs because of the flashback in the anime. There is no flashback in the manga. The first big manga flashback is when Ed and Al are telling Izumi what they did in Volume 6 (I think it's 6.)

The anime goes like this:
Episode 1-2 --> Ed is 15. Al is 14.
Episode 3-10 --> Ed is 12. Al is 11. (I think it was episode 10 anyway.)
Episode 11-51 --> Ed is 15. Al is 14.

In the manga it goes like this:
Chapter 1 --> Ed is 15. Al is 14.

Everything that has happened to Ed and Al since the first chapter of the manga (going to Youswell, meeting Tucker, Nina, and Scar for the first time, fighting Bald on the train) has all happened when they are 15 and 14. No flashback. (The fight he had with Roy in the side story happen before the manga starts. Edward is about 13/14 when that happens in the manga. He was 15 in the anime.)

That's pretty much it. (That was probably really confusing though.) Is there anything specific that you're confused on the time?

I think it's mostly in the fact that both the manga and the anime drop us in right in the middle of the action, but the anime goes back and recaps everything that happened up to a certain point before continuing, and I kept expecting the manga to do that as well and so whenever a flashback did occur, I was kinda taken by surprise and lost track of where I was. Probably if I started again and reread the manga it would make more sense, now that I've thought about it.

I had no idea that they were different ages in the side story about the Mustang fight.  It has been really weird to see familar events played out with a different timeline.  I'm going to really enjoy it now that the story line will be completely different.

I think that's the same for me.

I'm not hung up on the ages of Ed and Al and what is flashback and what isn't so much as I get the sequence of events mixed up.  Like what was posted, there is only the one flashback when they were kids, so that's not hard to confuse.  But, I've had problems that when I read the manga, I think that something already happened in it, but it was only in the anime that such and such a thing happened.  Yeah, I think I should just reread it all.

hey, i know that this thread's been pretty stagnant, but i'd like to revive it again. i had tried posting an fma manga thread on my own not knowing if one had already been in the works, and i was directed to this thread. i just started reading the translations not too long ago, and i find them very interesting, especially since they've taken a completely different avenue than the anime series. i'm only on chapter 38 or so, but i would really like to start discussing it with other fellow manga readers. what i think stands out most from the manga is how the homunculi (sp?) are created. anyone want to follow up?

Volume 7 ends with ch 29.  If people want to discuss beyond that, there is a thread for that but I don't have a link since I don't read it.  I'm sure Maenos or somebody could post a link to that, though.

So yeah, anything beyond ch 29 are spoilers.

Viz's manga seems to have a habit of being put out earlier than expected.

I heard that the latest volume of Death Note (also by them) was put out over a month early.

Thought I saw that one out on the display too. Sounds familiar for some reason.

I've seen the volumes come out a couple of weeks early before - but I'm fairly sure this one is at least a month early. Just hope they're not pushing them too fast, or we'll be in that '4 months between volumes' schedule really quick. Which is bad if you want a new FMA fix, but good for my manga budget...

FMA is pretty popular, but I don't think they'll speed up its release schedule.  At least, not yet.  Maybe after Kenshin ends next month (as its on a monthly schedule).

I just did some calculations, but all they resulted in is me getting a headache, heh.  If Viz speeds up the releease schedule, though, we probably won't see the effects of it (6 month waits, probably) until a year or so.

Hmm, I think the last time I was at a bookstore was a couple of days ago, and I definitely didn't see Vol. 8 yet.  Seems way early for it to be out now, but I guess it's good to know it might be out there.  Suppose I'll keep an eye out for it from now on.

Yeah, I was at the bookstore Saturday and there wasn't any new FMA out yet.  The latest Bleach was sold out, so we had to order it.  When we go pick that volume up, maybe I'll be lucky and be able to pick up new FMA, too.  I'm looking forward to this one now that I really don't have any idea on what is going to happen now that it seems the diverge between anime and manga is really definate (won't know for sure, I guess, but it seems to be going in a quite different direction now).

When I want to cry ~ {Dango Daikazoku} from Clannad | {Chiisana Tenohira} from Clannad OST

And when I want to laugh ~ [Guilty Beauty Love] from Ouran High School Host Club

When was it SUPPOSED to come out? 'cause I thought it wasn't due out until sometime in July.

Looked it up earlier, it's supposed to be out on July 18th.

I think someone at Viz read "June" instead of "July," heh.  I got my copy :smileyhappy:
