Scar is one character who has a distinctly different characterization between the anime and manga. The others are a little more subtle in their differences, if any.
(Hughes got a lot more "screen time" in the anime than the manga too; they wanted to make his death that much worse for the anime viewers. ^^)
*sigh* Poor Hughes. Probably because I'd seen the anime first and was already attached to him, his death in the manga was just as difficult to stomach. I remember one of my friends watching for the first time and asking, "Is he really dead?!" She couldn't believe it either.
I'm loving the feeling the manga is giving me with all the unfamiliar starting to happen, especially since the anime ended. Knowing that things might turn out better, or worse, but at least completely different if nothing else, is comforting now that the anime is over, the manga sort of steps in to fill the void. It was such a weird feeling when the anime ended and we had most of our answers. At least the manga is giving us an alternate and increasingly unfamiliar view on the story and the characters.
Scar definitely feels darker to me, and I like that, cuz I feel like in the anime they treated him almost too much like a martyr, someone to be admired for his noble intentions, though he did some pretty despicable things along the way. I don't necessarily want to see him as a villain, but I don't wand them to treat him too gently either. I'm also curious to see whether Dante shows up, or if they choose to go a different route with the Homunculi. I'd be so amused, at least for the sake of the bet, if it ended up being Hohenheim's doing.
