Equivalent Exchange *spoilers*

Couldn't anyone have given Ed their gate so he could continue alchmey. I mean it would be Equivalent Exchange at least I think it would. And everyone has a gate, but not everyone uses it. You think the government would pay someone cash to give ed their gate...Just saying. :smileyindifferent:

I doubt Truth would have accepted anyone else's gate as payment. Besides, no one knew that was an option before Ed tried it, and even if they did they would have no way to escape from Truth's area and would die there. Ed was only able to leave because his and Al's gates happened to be connected.

Well then couldn't AL trade his? I mean at least as a thanks for giving me my body back and all.

I'm very sure you can't give your Gate away, with the sole exception of trading it to Truth as part of a hefty deal.  And I'm sure that Truth only agreed to that deal because Ed defended his choice in exactly the right way.  Nine out of ten people wouldn't have been able to pull off what Ed did.  I know I wouldn't be able to.  Such selflessness is hard to find.

Plus, I'm sure each person's Gate is only able to be activated by that one, specific person.  Ed can only use Ed's Gate.  Al can only use Al's Gate.  Etc., etc.  The only reason Ed was able to get out was because Al was there to subconsciously manipulate his Gate.  Even if you could give your Gate to someone else, they would get a Gate they can't use.  I bet Truth would laugh at that and chastise them for it in some way.  This sort of makes sense since everyone's Gate is personalized.  The stylization for Ed's, Al's, Roy's, and Father's were all different.  Each one was meant for that one individual and no one else.

Well then that's not equivalent exchange that's bartering. And it wouldn't be X person giving Ed their gate. It would be X person giving their gate to Truth for Ed to have his own gate back.

I don't think Truth always follows Equivalent Exchange. Why did he say that Ed had the right answer about why he giving up his Gate, then?  The reason seemed to matter to Truth just as much as what was offered.

One soul for another has never been enough.  What makes you think one Gate for another is enough?
