FMA Continuing Discussion v.4 *NO SPOILERS*

[ Edited ]
Fullmetal Alchemist

I wasn't planning on making another one but I guess people still want to talk about it.     We've had a lot of fun discussing FullMetal Alchemist from every possible angle.  Let the theorizing and philosophizing continue. Here's the place to reminisce about past episodes and predict future possibilities.
With a new run of FMA on [as] a couple people wondered if it would be a good idea to have a new continuing discussion thread.  The old one is big enough to be locked at any time anyway.  So I hope anyone seeing this show for the first time enjoys discussing it as much as we did during the premiere run.

If you want to explore some other FMA threads check these out:

I'm going to have to go searching for the old threads but it's late tonight so I'll do it tomorrow.

The Rules

No Spoilers

No Flaming

No Spamming

Basically just follow board rules

Unfortunately Maenos beautiful font doesn't work anymore..

Man I missed these discussions. I guess for some of us this show never gets old. After seeing that first ep I pulled out my DVDs and started marathoning again.

Yay FMA! No matter how many times I see it, I still love it.
Too bad that goon didn't know I've got like a million perfect ways of dealing with hostage situations.
You ever try just throwing something at a guy with a hostage?
Of course not, who the hell does that?
But that is exactly why it works every time.
So yeah, before he even knew what was happening, there was ten pounds of gun flying right into his face.

I have to wonder... if automail isn't exactly rare in the FMA universe, why such a strong reaction from Rose on seeing Ed's arm? Has she just never seen someone with automail before then? I can imagine it would be a bit unsettling seeing that for the first time, but it seemed a little much.

Sure, I've seen people stare at amputees with prosthetics, but not quite Rose's reaction.

I think it was more the shock on top of so many other shocks that day. Her world was being shaken up by a priest she trusted and a cynical kid who was telling her her faith was a crock. I mean, finding out Al is empty is more of a shock to most than seeing Ed's prosthetics. A friend of mine also suggested was that maybe she was more accustomed to see older people, like war veterans, who were wearing some kind of prosthetics, rather than someone her own age.

I thought that her revulsion had more to do with her faith than anything else.  To my way of thinking she was perceiving the metal arm and leg as something bad Ed had done, call it sin if you will.  So she was reacting more to the idea of someone who had sinned so horribly that they had then been punished with the loss of limbs.  I'm not sure why I thought that exactly though.

Hm, I'm not sure I can agree entirely with that, though it does make some sense. I don't believe they show anyone with automail in Liore, and it's pretty far into the desert, so it's not hard to imagine metal prostheses are a rarity.

That's what I was thinking, too.  Liore is so isolated.  Ed's age as a factor makes a lot of sense, as well.  Ghost, I can't help but wonder if your sin-factor reasoning in comes because we know what Ed's done?  Did you have that reaction the first time around?  At that point in her day, Ed does represent an antithesis of faith so I wouldn't be surprised if the thought that he was being punished by God did cross her mind.  All these ideas would factor into her reaction.

That's a good question but I think I just always thought that.

It could also just be a general reaction to Ed.  He comes across as so arrogant in this episode.  What gives him the right to that stone anymore than Cornello?  Ed is a demanding, self-centered snob so maybe her reaction was more against him as a person.  However, I always got the impression that it was the automail she was reacting to.  Certainly the shock of finding out that Al was an empty suit of armor would tend to scare the wits out of you.  Maybe Ed's automail was just the rest of the iceberg.

There were a lot of good points made here about Ed's automail and his attitude, as well as Rose's reaction to his limbs. She already has him pegged as an arrogant, cyincal non-believer, and when Cornello talks about sin, especially after Al's little speech about his body, it's the horror of the perceived sin and it's consequences that makes her react the way she does. Automail can't be that rare that Lior has never heard of it, but I'll bet it's a rarity itself there, which was probably also a contributing factor.

Knowing of automail is one thing, but actually seeing it (esp. in Ed's case, where he's young and a double-amputee) would be disconcerting to anyone who may have never seen it before. And, as someone stated so well above, the whole day had been a bit of a shock for Rose.

And isn't it worth mentioning that right before she saw ed's automail, she saw something that should have gnawed his arm off?

That alone would put her into shock. And it's intimidating when someone forces you to look at something, so rose was expecting the worst, saying she got it would be the understatement of the century.

But doesn't Rose react before Cornello says something about sin? If she did, then I think it's just pure shock of seeing that his arms and legs weren't real. If she didn't, then I think not only was she reacting to how Ed was punished for his sins but, she might've also been a little scared of what may happen to her because she does state when she's running away from Ed and Al "They made me doubt your, Cornello. Forgive me."

Odd...I watched the ep, but I don't remember when exactly Cornello talks about sin, though I think Rose's reaction is simultaneous to Cornello's expclamation about Ed's fake limbs, then he goes off on the rant about why he was a sinner and whatnot. It's before that, though, that Cray talks about it being the will of Leto or whatever that he has to kill Ed and Al, when Al's head flies off and she sees that he's hollow. I don't think Rose is stupid, she's just been kind of deluded because she was given that flame of hope in a very dark period in her life, and followed it blindly because it eased the hurt. Now she's realizing that she may be in over her head, and the seed of doubt in her star of hope has been planted.

I watched the episode too, and I still can't remember when exactly Cornello talks about sin, I might have to rewatch it when I get home from class. I think Cray was the one who first planted the seed of Ed's missing limbs being a result of his sins because, like you said, Cray said that they were evil and that it was the will of God. I don't think Rose is stupid, either. I think maybe the main reason for her reaction is what everybody's been saying all along, it was just the straw that broke the camel's back during a stressful day.

Well, I was gonna rewatch the first episode, but when I put in my DVD I discovered that it was all scratched up and jumping around. :smileysad: Must've been a result from it getting dropped on the floor when my place got broken into. Anyway, I'm gonna go to Best Buy tonight and see if I can replace it.

Oh that's really a shame Yuyu.  I hope you don't have any trouble finding a replacement.

I would rewatch it but I have a ton of threads to catch up with here and some other work stuff to do.  If Cray planted the idea of sin into her head that may be where I got the idea that she was so shocked because of the sin rather than the automail specifically.

I wasn't able to go to Best Buy tonight. I ran out of time from making a resume to go to the job fair tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure Cray is the first one to mention them being sinners in front of Rose.

*mentally replays scenes leading up to it* Rose is talking to Ed while she polishes the altar, then it cuts to Cray reporting to Cornello about a State Alchemist being there, and Cornello is like, you know what needs to be done. Ed and Al are chasing Rose, Cray shows up with a gun, says it's the will of Leto, Rose sees Al headless, freaks out, he makes the speech about how this is their punishment for sinning...yeah, Cray definitely mentions sin in front of Rose first. She trusts these guys, though doubt has been planted, so why not take their words to heart in the heat of the moment?
