Greetings and welcome to the corner of the ASMB devoted to Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. This is the place for discussions having solely to do with FMA; threads about multiple AS Action shows go in the
General Action Discussion folder, and there are other subfolders for discussions relating to the other shows that are currently part of the Action block.
Along with the board's admins and mods,
foolycoolyman123456,
DreamTheater2112 and I have been appointed as "HELPeRs" who will help keep this folder running smoothly and assist the actual mods. We'll be on the lookout for unmarked spoilers and other rule violations, and make sure that threads are in their proper folders. Feel free to PM any of us if you have any questions or concerns. (But of course please keep them civil.

) In general, anything inappropriate should be reported to the mods using the handy "report abuse" feature so that they can take care of it all official-like. The main exception to this is unmarked spoilers; if you see something spoilery, check to see if one of the HELPeRs is online and send a PM to us along with sending a report.
If you're new to the folder, or to AD, take some time to look around at the existing threads and see if there are any discussions that you feel like joining in on. It's generally a good idea to read at least the first post and the last page or two of a thread before posting in it, so that you can get an idea of what the thread is about and where the current conversation is going. Also be sure to take note of spoiler rules and other guidelines, which can vary from thread to thread.
New threads are also welcome, of course, as long as they relate to FMA and are generally board-appropriate.
Since this folder now covers two shows, one old and one currently premiering, I'd like to clarify the general spoiler rules that will be in use on this board.
As is the case with all premiering anime, discussion of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood should be kept as spoiler-free as possible. This means that
any discussion of parts of the show that have not aired on Adult Swim should be considered spoiler territory and appropriately marked. Subbies should use appropriate spoiler warnings and HTML code to mark and cover up spoilery text, whether in individual posts or in thread titles, and threads that are designated as spoiler-free for dubbies should be kept free of any mention of stuff that hasn't aired yet. Please also try to avoid hinting about future events. Even if you think you're being stealthy, you could give away information that dubbies shouldn't be thinking about.
Discussion of the first FMA series is a bit more unfettered, but there are still some guidelines that should be followed. As per
modly declaration, major plot points such as character deaths, the series ending, and other revelations about characters or story twists are considered spoilers and should be marked and/or covered. This means that unless the thread title is clearly marked for spoilers, the actual spoiler text should be covered up in posts. That way people who haven't seen the entire show won't stumble over something that will ruin part of the story for them.
Also, since the FMA movie has not been aired on AS, discussions about it should be spoiler-marked or confined to the movie discussion thread.
The best way to effectively cover spoilers is to use a HTML code that will change the color of both the text and the background behind it. This way, people who want to read the spoiler can highlight the text and it will become visible, but people who want to avoid the spoiler won't see anything but a wall of color.
Here's a handy HTML code that will match the color of the dark gray background of the board:
<font style="color: #232323; background: #232323">SPOILER-TEXT-HERE</font>
To use it, enable HTML editor if you don't already have it on, and then copy and paste the code into your post. While still in HTML editor, replace the "SPOILER-TEXT-HERE" with the actual text. It's a good idea to put asterisks or some other marking around the outside of the code so people know where the spoiler begins and ends.
Remember that even though the original series has run on AS several times, there are still people who haven't seen all of it, and we don't want those folks to feel unwelcome here or get spoiled. This is especially true while there's a repeat run playing on AS, and during those times extra caution will be needed not to spoil first-timers watching that run.
Posters are welcome to make episode discussion threads for each week's Brotherhood premiere. These should be posted at (or after) midnight eastern time on the Friday night before the episode airs. Generally the first thread posted with a timestamp of 12:00 or later will be floated as the official discussion thread, although HELPeRs and/or mods may also consider the look and content of threads when deciding which one to float (for example, if someone posts a thread with little or nothing in it, they shouldn't necessarily expect it to be floated just because it was posted first). A good episode thread should be laid out attractively, informative without giving away too much about the episode, and the poster's own work (or reposted with the original author's permission).
Remember that episode threads are considered non-spoiler until the action actually appears on-screen on the east coast (and even then should not contain any discussion of what happens after that episode). Folks on the west coast may want to steer clear until after the episode airs for them.
Soooooo... Go FMA! It will pwn you!
