Welcome to the Fullmetal Alchemist Board!

[ Edited ]
Greetings and welcome to the corner of the ASMB devoted to Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. This is the place for discussions having solely to do with FMA; threads about multiple AS Action shows go in the General Action Discussion folder, and there are other subfolders for discussions relating to the other shows that are currently part of the Action block.

Along with the board's admins and mods, foolycoolyman123456, DreamTheater2112 and I have been appointed as "HELPeRs" who will help keep this folder running smoothly and assist the actual mods. We'll be on the lookout for unmarked spoilers and other rule violations, and make sure that threads are in their proper folders. Feel free to PM any of us if you have any questions or concerns. (But of course please keep them civil. :smileytongue:) In general, anything inappropriate should be reported to the mods using the handy "report abuse" feature so that they can take care of it all official-like. The main exception to this is unmarked spoilers; if you see something spoilery, check to see if one of the HELPeRs is online and send a PM to us along with sending a report.

If you're new to the folder, or to AD, take some time to look around at the existing threads and see if there are any discussions that you feel like joining in on. It's generally a good idea to read at least the first post and the last page or two of a thread before posting in it, so that you can get an idea of what the thread is about and where the current conversation is going. Also be sure to take note of spoiler rules and other guidelines, which can vary from thread to thread.

New threads are also welcome, of course, as long as they relate to FMA and are generally board-appropriate.

Since this folder now covers two shows, one old and one currently premiering, I'd like to clarify the general spoiler rules that will be in use on this board.

As is the case with all premiering anime, discussion of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood should be kept as spoiler-free as possible. This means that any discussion of parts of the show that have not aired on Adult Swim should be considered spoiler territory and appropriately marked. Subbies should use appropriate spoiler warnings and HTML code to mark and cover up spoilery text, whether in individual posts or in thread titles, and threads that are designated as spoiler-free for dubbies should be kept free of any mention of stuff that hasn't aired yet. Please also try to avoid hinting about future events. Even if you think you're being stealthy, you could give away information that dubbies shouldn't be thinking about.

Discussion of the first FMA series is a bit more unfettered, but there are still some guidelines that should be followed. As per modly declaration, major plot points such as character deaths, the series ending, and other revelations about characters or story twists are considered spoilers and should be marked and/or covered. This means that unless the thread title is clearly marked for spoilers, the actual spoiler text should be covered up in posts. That way people who haven't seen the entire show won't stumble over something that will ruin part of the story for them.

Also, since the FMA movie has not been aired on AS, discussions about it should be spoiler-marked or confined to the movie discussion thread.

The best way to effectively cover spoilers is to use a HTML code that will change the color of both the text and the background behind it. This way, people who want to read the spoiler can highlight the text and it will become visible, but people who want to avoid the spoiler won't see anything but a wall of color.

Here's a handy HTML code that will match the color of the dark gray background of the board:

<font style="color: #232323; background: #232323">SPOILER-TEXT-HERE</font>

To use it, enable HTML editor if you don't already have it on, and then copy and paste the code into your post. While still in HTML editor, replace the "SPOILER-TEXT-HERE" with the actual text. It's a good idea to put asterisks or some other marking around the outside of the code so people know where the spoiler begins and ends.

Remember that even though the original series has run on AS several times, there are still people who haven't seen all of it, and we don't want those folks to feel unwelcome here or get spoiled. This is especially true while there's a repeat run playing on AS, and during those times extra caution will be needed not to spoil first-timers watching that run.

Posters are welcome to make episode discussion threads for each week's Brotherhood premiere. These should be posted at (or after) midnight eastern time on the Friday night before the episode airs. Generally the first thread posted with a timestamp of 12:00 or later will be floated as the official discussion thread, although HELPeRs and/or mods may also consider the look and content of threads when deciding which one to float (for example, if someone posts a thread with little or nothing in it, they shouldn't necessarily expect it to be floated just because it was posted first). A good episode thread should be laid out attractively, informative without giving away too much about the episode, and the poster's own work (or reposted with the original author's permission).

Remember that episode threads are considered non-spoiler until the action actually appears on-screen on the east coast (and even then should not contain any discussion of what happens after that episode). Folks on the west coast may want to steer clear until after the episode airs for them.

Soooooo... Go FMA! It will pwn you!

And an addendum as we start out with the new board format...

Things will be in a transition period for a little while until we get settled into our new routine. Threads relating to FMA will be moved over from the GAD folder over the course of the next few days, and as they pop up elsewhere in AD; if you have any suggestions for threads that should be moved, please post links to them here.

As threads get moved from the GAD folder to this folder, they will unfortunately be arranged in the order in which they were moved. So it will probably take a little while for the more active threads to work their way to the top of the index like we're all used to, but things will sort themselves out as people start posting in the threads here.

Also, people who haven't seen all of FMA should be careful about reading through some of the older threads. Many of them were in use during the premiere run or subsequent repeat runs, so even though they're marked "no spoilers" they contain discussion of the entire series. We'll try to get the thread titles edited to more accurately reflect their content, but in the meantime just tread cautiously.

Cille pretty much covered it. In addition:

- We may lock some of the older threads to foster new discussion, or at least let new threads come out from under all the older ones that have been moved.

- Please, please, continue to mark your spoilers.

- Feel free to pm either of us if an issue arises. We are here to help, after all.

If you have any other Action related questions, feel free to take a look at the General Action Discussion FAQ

Since we've had time to settle, I'm going to unfloat the Threads That Should Be Here thread.

In the future, if you think of something we might have missed still feel free to bring it to our attention in there.

Oh hey, it's this thread. How ya doin', old buddy?

Just wanted to give the folks who still look up here a heads up on some recent developments.

First of all, I have a new partner in crime goody-two-shoes law enforcement. As you may have noticed, BigBear has been off the hook for quite some time to focus on important real-life business, and now foolycoolyman123456 has been appointed to provide some backup. So he'll be helping keep an eye on the place from now on.

Also, our duties as HELPeRs have been clarified. Up until now we've been kind of in charge of policing our folders and were responsible for doing things like moving inappropriate posts and locking threads. The mods would like to have more control over that sort of thing, so we'll be letting them take care of the mod jobs from now on. So if you see something naughty, send in an abuse report on the post or thread in question. The current reporting system notifies all online mods of incoming reports, so reports should get responses much more quickly than they have in the past.

The main exception to this is unmarked spoilers. We can edit posts directly in our folders now, so it will be much easier for us to take care of spoilers as we see them. If you see an unmarked spoiler, check to see if one of us is online and send a PM explaining the situation. Send in a report on the post too, just in case we don't get to it right away.

Oh, and if you have an old post that you'd like to have edited (for example, an opening post in a thread that has outdated info or something that needs to be fixed for accuracy), you can ask one of us to edit it for you. We'll only be doing edits of this sort on posts made by the person requesting the edit, though, and we reserve the right to pass on a request if it's not really necessary or we don't have the time.

I done tweaked the first post again, to add Dream to the roster and lay out how things should work now that we have two shows occupying the folder. So please cast an eye over the wall of text and see if you can pick out what's new. :smileyvery-happy:
