Random, belated response (so many recent posts, woo hoo!), but it was only recently, after watching some of the subtitled FUNi-releases, that I realized it's not "A-yumi," like the letter "a," but "Aye-yumi," like "Haibara Ai."  A subtle difference, to be sure, but a difference indeed.  In the beginning, I even pronounced "Genta" like "Jenta"--lol!  ^_^

Looks like I'll fall for the debate topic - I think the character-changing events are so low in Conan because there have to be so many subtle ones. The amount of time necessary for those C-C events to make sense in isn't there in Conan and can't ever be. There are a few that exist, but honestly I believe that the more subtle ones are the most noticible. Takagi showing he likes Sato, Sato realizing it, etc. Those stand out more to me mainly because it forces me to pick apart the manga chapters for every bit of information I can get.

My guess is that, with all the murders, character change is relegated to the bookends of each case with some extra interaction in the middle.  Aoyama seems more adept at those key surprises and twists, as well as side-stories-that-could-be-important-later sorts of things, because they more often than not affect character as well.  I dunno.  Maybe your friend needs to define "major character changing event."

My favorite movie is also Countdown to Heaven. I'll add in a different reason: the movie did a nice job of delving into Haibara's mind and psychology, something that is too rarely done in the manga.

To me - Haibara's breakdown in movie 5 was moving but I don't like it because it created the double standard of Conan being able to call Ran anytime he likes, but Haibara can't call anyone - now she doesn't have anyone - but if she did, do you think Shinichi would let her? Considering that person could be watched by the BO?

Sorry, I have to disagree with that one.  (The phone thing, not the Movie 5 goodness!)  Conan's purpose for calling Ran as Shin'ichi is way different than Ai's purpose for (SPOILER) calling her sister over the abandoned answering machine.  Akemi is dead, not innocent and ignorant like Ran. (END SPOILER) Conan needs and wants to keep Ran safe by letting her think he's fine and off on some case; Ai seeks comfort in a method she later admits is dangerous.

***Spoiler mini-rant:

Volume 42's Party Showdown and her subsequent turning down of the FBI's witness protection was obviously a significant development for her, right? So what now? Ever since, Haibara has contributed little/nothing to the story. In no way did she help Conan figure out the BO boss' phone address, besides forcing him not to act on it.

She doesn't tell Conan about Ran's involvement in the halloween case.

And then, what did she really do during FBI vs. Organization? She got in a car and later went home. When they got to the park, Conan told her not to do anything and she passively agreed. Then later Jodie told them to go home and she again passively agrees. What was the point of giving us a second flashback of her "I won't run away!" conversation with Ayumi when she actually does very little? And what has she done since? Only recently in 556 does she even know what's going on. It feels like she's little more than another member of the Detective Boys now.

Concerning Ai's development - it's kinda at a standstill, but things in Conan are like evolution, they make leaps and bounds in a few chapters and stop for the next hundred. The fact that we only see Ai in DB cases as well is disappointing, we used to have much more interesting chapters, like the Porsche murder - now she's the other babysitter of the kids. I'm thinking this might change with the next BO chapters... which I think could be in December/Jan, at the earliest November.

Haven't read past Hallow'een Party yet, but based on your words, Knightus, I agree with crimson on this one.  Aoyama takes his sweet time and does shove major plots and characters to the back burner for awhile . . . before bringing them out again in a big way.

Maybe you guys can answer this, since we're on the topic of Ai: Did we learn about what Ai heard her mother say in the tapes, the part she believed Ai was old enough to hear?  That, combined with the still unexplained relationship with Shuichi, and we have some layers of this girl to uncover.  Layers, but not like Shrek.  (Tee hee!)

I'm still placing bets that it's Toichi, though that Blue Carbuncle relation sounds interesting, too.  And you're probably right: it makes little sense that Gosho would reveal such a thing.

By the way, I must say your sig is beautiful!  That's the romanji of the key scene in Movie 4, right?  Ah!  So romantic . . . now if only Conan could return to normal and get on with it in the canon.

Glad you guys liked the nostalgic 6-month anniversary rememberance. To the people who are new - don't worry, you're here now. ^^ This thread thrives on memories, and you'll soon be a part of a tradition stretching back over two years.

Today's crimsonbullet's birthday. I don't know if the board would let me say anything else, there are rules here... rules regarding saying ages, giving out emails. I understand why. We're not supposed to get too personal or off-topic. Probably as a result of that, I let the opportunity to get to truly know her slip by for so long. Yet from a distance, from her passionate informed contributions whenever she made them, it was clear she was one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable Conan fans around.

One of the things I think we all look forward to is reading new files. Who wasn't excited by the ghost case 2 weeks ago? You know, it wasn't too long ago that no one and no place had any scans of Conan files. That was when Crimson stepped in, week after week, buying Shounen Sunday and scanning it for everyone just so that we could keep up to date and enjoy the files alongside her. Of course it doesn't stop there. She helped organize the translation of Conan when no would step up to it and the proboard thread was a mess. Also you may or may not have noticed - she's pretty modest about it and doesn't bring attention to it - she's selflessly edited and re-edited nearly 10% of this entire long manga, just to make it prettier and easier to read for others...

But what's especially relevant to us here, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed... she keeps the DUI alive. Posting daily, giving feedback, helping others, sharing knowledge and just making the atmosphere what it is. It's reassuring to know she's here, I know together we can make it through anything.

So to the person who's saved the Conan community on countless occasions. Who's now at last a DUI thread creator, and who makes every passing day she loves me in my life brighter...

Crimson, I wish you, and hope you have, the happiest birthday in the world.
I couldn't imagine having any other soulmate in the world... because with you by my side I already have all the love I need in this world. So please smile - always smile, just like back then. There's no reason not to. ^^

And cheers everyone! Hopefully we'll get to enjoy the next Conan file later tonight - but if not, you probably know who'll come through for us anyway. Again. ^_-

Aack!  Just so sweet . . . and so true . . . .

You have made a major difference in the Conan fan community, crimson.  Thank you for all your hard work--and enjoy a drink on us!  Cheers!

Happy Birthday, crimsonbullet!

But on Ai, we still haven't found out about what was on the tapes. It's disappointing that we have no new stuff to gush over. I do see about what you mean about the phone thing.

Happy Birthday, Crimson!

Last night, I dreamed that I was watching [as], and all of a sudden, they advertized Case Closed! I was ecstatic in the dream, and it even said it would be the "season finale" so I figured that meant No Immunity For The Diplomat, and I got even more excited.

Thank you for the belated birthday wishes guys~! ^^

last night I had a funny dream too. I was Jackie from that 70's show and for some reason me and Hyde were detectives, god knows why. I didn't even watch it yesterday. But is was cool cause we solved crime and looked good while doing it. No geeky bowtie for Hyde.

Edit: Just read over my post and came to a horrid realization - what if I dreamed of that 70s show's Hyde because I'm uber obsessed with Conan?! Haido - Hyde @____@
